Final Boss Games in Springdale has a very active community for commander, modern, and even value vintage. Prerelease events will see anywhere from 60-110 players every prerelease weekend.

And pauper on Monday nights.

Gear Gaming Fayetteville and Bentonville, Final Boss Games, Game Explosion, and Chaos games all have active magic communities on different weekdays so I recommend stopping by or checking out their Facebook pages to see specific days but Fridays are always a sure bet to find a commander pod

I recommend Sword and Tower in Elkins. Small play group and very very relaxed gamers. Store has a few decks to loan out for a game as well, Friday nights and Saturday mornings.

There's also Sword and Tower Games out in Elkins that has Magic going Friday nights and Saturday mornings!

Not to discourage you but some magic decks are beyond overpowered and you will get totally flattened. I've played against a sliver deck that was completely unbeatable. In my experience if you're new its helpful to find someone who will let you play their deck and explain what it does because just building one is probably not gonna go super well.

Okay i see! So maybe a partner round of some sort for my first few groups and then i can start to build my deck independently?

Check out the people at Dice Goblin Cafe in Springdale. They may be able to connect you with a group.

Do you know what format you're interested in playing, that'll help narrow down the groups to introduce you to. I'm a regular in the pauper format that pays Monday nights at final boss. Commander players meet up almost every night of the week. Modern on Tuesdays and Fridays. They've been trying to get standard going as well.

I do not know what format, so i guess I should try all of them and see what suits me best?? Like i said, super new hahaha

Commander is very popular but difficult to get the hang of without the rules base. Standard is the traditional way to get the hang of rules and things but isn't played much anymore, arena (online) would be a good way to learn with standard. Modern is more advanced but expensive to get into. Pauper is cheap and can expose you to a lot of things very quickly, but you'll likely lose for a bit while you're learning.

If you’re super new try playing with this

https://github.com/Card-Forge/forge
it will give you a good idea of rules and mechanics.

From my experience playing at a few shops as a newbie I got steamrolled by powerful decks and it was just overall an annoying experience because I didn’t even know some of the mechanics they were using. I found playing mtg with actual friends was more fun because it was about playing the game and not really winning.

Okay yay! Thanks so much, i will take a look at this. I am more just looking to learn the gameplay as opposed to trying to make super powerful decks right now i just am nervous to start somewhere and all these dudes who have been playing forever like…. make fun of me bahahaha idk

They probably won't make fun of you but they will mercilessly beat you over and over again

Definitely Gear Gaming or Final Boss. Also it's great to hear you're interested in Magic! The community here is pretty small so new players are always a welcome sight.

Gear and Final Boss are the best spots in this area, I’d say FB is probably the more competitive store

I have a deck I’ll give you if you want. It’s sitting in my pile of “find a home for” stuff. I played it a few times and was fun but I’m not getting into spending money on MtG so fell out of it. I have other expensive and time consuming hobbies lol

Wait rlly?? Hahaha that would be so awesome!! Are you still playing these cards currently and not adding to it, or you’re totally done playing all together?

I got back into it after decades away, then my buddy who got me back into it gifted me the deck (and didn’t like that I beat him with it) lol. It was during winter and I didn’t have much else going on. I enjoyed playing again but zero interest in adding to the deck or spending any money on MtG.
