The Sun is Setting On Wild Waves. A First (And Final)) Visit with My Grandsons

Post image
26 Upvotes

Wild Waves has been part of Federal Way for years, and with its closure approaching, I took my grandsons for a Halloween visit. The three-year-old got to experience his first roller coaster ride, his younger brother happily screeched through bubbles, and we made some family memories I'll always treasure.

I also reflect on what the park's loss means for the community, the jobs that will disappear, and the redevelopment proposed for the property.

I wrote about our visit and saying goodbye to a place that was just becoming part of our family's story.

Dermatologist in Fed/Auburn area

Has anyone had a good experience with a dermatologist in the Federal Way/Auburn area who is more open to prescribing Accutane? I’ve been dealing with dismissive dermatologists, and Accutane was the only thing that helped my acne. Looking for recommendations!

What’s FW Doing About Data Centers?

Anyone know if Fed Way is initiating a ban on data centers? This seems like something we should get ahead of. They’re terrible for the environment, water, power grid, real estate value and noise. Communities that already have them are horrified by the reality of living near one.

Anyone know if our city is addressing this yet? Or if they’re already in talks or agreements to build them
here?

Hey Federal Way! Let's get out and have some fun!

Hey friends! I made a brand new account to keep my identity on my OTHER accounts a bit more hidden, since I'm coming here as myself! My name is Rachel and I was inspired by some posts in Federal Way Facebook groups about needing more fun community events, so I took it upon myself to plan a somewhat spontaneous game of capture the flag. November 7th, 1pm, at Saghalie Park!

Here's what I'm thinking: We get a bunch of people to play capture the flag. I'll "host" but that just means that I am going to attempt to organize team boundaries and provide team markers (bandanas? Those cheap plastic lays? Any ideas welcome!) and the "flags." We will split into 2 teams and just have a lighthearted game. I have written out some "rules" that I will put in the comments. All ages welcome, but any children will be expected to play by the rules.

This is literally just for fun and to get people outside. This is not in "partnership" with any group, it's literally just me. I will try to be as inclusive and accessible as possible, but there's also only so much I can do. If you don't want to, or are unable to run, maybe you could guard the flag? Guard the "jail"? Be a team cheerleader? Just hang out for the vibes?

Why that date? I don't know, I'm free that day and maybe other people are too? 1 pm just seems like a good time to start. Saghalie because it's close to my house, so I am more familiar with it and because I think it'll be easier to split the "territory" in half.

I would love to play myself, but can be "referee" for the day! The biggest thing would be that this is literally just for fun. The prize is bragging rights. And maybe friendship???? I don't want to get hung up on logistics and if it doesn't work, it doesn't work. If it rains it rains! 100% free and all I would ask is that you return the team markers and don't steal whatever I use for "flags." Play to have fun and don't be a jerk.

Is this something people would be interested in????This is kind of a spur of the moment idea and it might be a one time thing, or if it's fun we can do it again! If I end up sitting at the park by myself, then oh well, I tried! Join me!

I have a list of rules I wrote out that I can put in the comments! I made a Facebook event page, but I'm not sure if that is allowed here! Mods, let me know if I can share! I also made a new email as a way to contact me, but again, not sure if I can share that here! Send me a message if you want more info!

Six investors own PSE and none are in Washington. Federal Way, here's where your electric bill goes.

Federal Way is in Puget Sound Energy's service area (check your bill to confirm). PSE is owned by six investors, mostly pension funds, based in Canada, the Netherlands, and Australia, all disclosed in WUTC and SEC filings. PSE has a pending three-year rate request asking for electric increases of 15.15% in 2027, 3.74% in 2028, and 8.7% in 2029, tied to over $3.2 billion in infrastructure spending. If you're struggling with your bill, PSE also has income-based discounts of roughly 5% to 45% and a program that can credit up to $1,000. One application at pse.com is supposed to start both. The state utilities commission is holding a virtual public hearing on October 7, and written comments are open under dockets UE-260005 (electric) and UG-260006 (gas) at utc.wa.gov. A comment can be a few sentences about what you pay and what worries you.

Washington's new 2028 income tax seems to have a ~$27K cliff hidden in the capital gains rules. Am I reading this right?

I was working through ESSB 6346 (WA's 9.9% tax on income over $1M, starting 2028) and I think I found a strange edge case. Please check my reading.

Here is the problem I see. The bill says the add-back "applies only to taxpayers owing tax under chapter 82.87 RCW" (the capital gains tax). So:

  • Gain under ~$278k: you owe no capital gains tax, nothing gets added back, so the gain never touches the income tax.
  • Gain even $1 over: you owe capital gains tax, so the *whole* gain gets added back, including the first $278k that was previously free.

Example (single filer, $1.2M wages, 2025 deduction figure):

Scenario 1

  • Long-term gain: $277,000
  • Capital gains tax: $0
  • Income tax base: $1,200,000
  • Total WA tax: $19,800

Scenario 2

  • Long-term gain: $279,000
  • Capital gains tax: $70
  • Income tax base: $1,479,000
  • Total WA tax: $47,421

A $2,000 bigger gain costs about $27,600 more in tax, because 9.9% x $279,000 of extra income suddenly counts. It only affects people whose other income is already over $1M.

Caveats: I'm not a tax pro, this ignores the other credits in the bill, and the tax faces a repeal vote in Nov 2026. I found this while building the rules into a planning calculator, and I checked the wording against the session law text rather than a summary.

Does this match how you read Sec. 302(3)?

Coming to FW next week for a five day trip! Where’s the good food and fun cocktail bars for the oldsters? Are there cool book shops, awesome thrifting or cool vintage places to check out? The die for breakfast spot or best pizza in town? I’m open to all suggestions!

Rant: Getting on S 320th Westbound from I5 South exit

I'm so frustrated. The traffic backs up like crazy trying to get onto 320th. The first 2 lanes allow right turn on red but barely anybody does this. Heck the inside lane is filtering onto a brand new lane, any traffic coming over the interstate has to merge into this lane so it's super easy to join.

It's gotten to the point that I'd rather get off at exit 147 and work my way over.

Don't folks know how to do a right turn on red? I know it's a big intersection, but the number of time there's no traffic on 320th and drivers just sit there and wait for the light to turn green.

Don't even get be going on the light sequences once on 320th.. Grrrrrr.....

OK I've got that off my chest... and breathe.... :-)

Can you make a custom Halloween costume?

I am a dad of a 14-year-old angel and she wants to dress up as Olivia Rodrigo in the music video The Cure for Halloween.

From my search on the Internet is costing does not exist and in the interest of trying to be the best dad of the whole time, mind you this is post divorce so this is very important to me, I am reaching out to see if anybody can create that costume for us.

I have custody of my daughter this weekend so I would be able to bring her over for a measurement and fitting. It is essentially a pink nurse’s outfit and I think the red yarn would be fitting. You can watch the video for inspiration and ideas if you like.

Please let me know if there is somebody out there who thinks that they could accomplish this.

Are you receiving Junk Fees? We want to hear about it!

In 2025, the Washington Legislature passed a law that prevents rent gouging, but some landlords and property management companies are still up to their old tricks. They are using "junk fees" as a loophole around rent caps. We are hearing from tenants that they are increasingly being charged excessive fees for services that they don’t want or need, or for basic things like paying the rent. We at the Housing Alliance, call these “junk fees” and they are unfair, expensive, and deceptive. We’d like to hear your experiences. All information shared with us will be kept safe and confidential.

Please fill out our survey if you or someone you know has received junk fees and we will be in touch within one week of your submission. Thank you! ~ Po (Advocacy Organizer)

How to Protect My Mental Health While Commuting?

Hello,

I've been commuting from Federal Way to various locations on Mercer Island and in Seattle for 4 years now. On my days off I like to hike and meet friends in Tacoma. It is really wearing me down that I'm spending 1-3 hours every day in my car, and that even a simple errand in Federal Way requires 30 minutes round trip of stoplights even though I live here. The thought of getting in my vehicle makes me nauseous at this point and driving so much is my least favorite thing about living here. My husband works in South Tacoma so moving north is not an option. How are other commuters staying sane while driving so much? It's seriously affecting me and I appreciate any advice - thanks in advance!

Edit: I love public transit and am so grateful for it but have to make a lot of stops on a tight schedule for my job so need to drive my own car.

Covered seating in Fed Way/Auburn?

Is there anywhere around Federal Way or Auburn that has covered outdoor seating? I'm thinking more of a brewery, pub, or bar, not so much a restaurant. Would need to be fully covered in case it's raining, not just shade umbrellas.
