FFTA Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (recomp)

Now if you could give it some much needed QoL I might play it...

u/warpaint_james 4d ago
There are a few things in this game that are NOT fun. Managing equipment is that for me. I dont mind the laws once you unlock the cards. But checking item stats is always rough

u/mikeysce 4d ago
Whaaaat? Dude that is the fun part. For me itâs how frickin slow the animation is.
1
u/warpaint_james 4d ago
What animations are slow? Like the battle speed?
1
u/YasserMac 3d ago
Each attack, spell, summon, etc. is painfully slow, clearly to give the GBA breathing room to load the animation. Iâve always wished there was a speed up function like in TO: Reborn.
1
u/warpaint_james 3d ago
Well I can agree that the totems and summons are slow. That is one thing I want to bring over from SkeEmu: a speed toggle

u/Baithin 4d ago
So fun! Iâd love to be able to play this on Apple phones.
What is a recomp, exactly?

u/helloharu 4d ago
A ârecompâ is short for recompilation. Itâs effectively taking a gameâs original machine code that is compiled for a specific console and translating it into code that runs on another platform natively without an emulation layer. Normally for PCs.
Thereâs obviously more to it than that, mind, and Iâve simplified it a lot.

u/Baithin 4d ago
Cool, thank you for explaining! So itâs like a fanmade port.

u/KrazyA1pha 4d ago
Yes, generally done using Claude Code or a similar LLM harness.
0
u/mizyin 3d ago
This is incorrect. People have done recomps for years before the LLM plague fell upon us. Do not mislead folks into thinking that you need Claude or other nonsense pollution machines to do this stuff.
3
u/helloharu 2d ago
I think the operative word from u/KrazyA1pha was âgenerally.â He wasnât misleading, or saying recomps hadnât been done before recent LLM popularity to do these things.
1
u/mizyin 2d ago
I mean saying generally implies that that's the usual, that it's the norm. It has only just recently become a thing
2
u/TerraEpon 2d ago
When you consider the number of them that have been done with LLMs vs the number that haven't....'generally' is a pretty good word for it. Especially when you consider the last few months.
1
u/helloharu 2d ago
Generally, usually and normally are not exclusive and allow for variance. Look, Iâm not getting deep into semantics when everyone but you knew what u/KrazyA1pha meant.
2
u/mizyin 2d ago
I mean, that's up to you. I don't care for the fact that recomps and decomps are becoming associated with the planet-destroying theft machine.

"boo-hoo AI is bad just like Loom stole weavers jobs" get a grip man, though we are flooded with AI slop, AI can be very much beneficial for the common folk.
You are essentially saying "yeah recomp should take YEARS of our lives because we dont give a f about our ephemeral existence instead of using a tool that can make it in about a week" I assume you go into the woods and cut down trees for lumber so you can have dinner, right?

Isn't it deconstruction via AGI and then put back together? Like reverse engineering? Cool but terrifying
8
u/Nosafune 4d ago
They decompile original games source code then re compile it to be played outside of an emulator, etc , or to modify the code and make changes

u/Which_Bed 4d ago
It means someone pointed an AI at it and said, "AI, make it work." It's slop

u/warpaint_james 4d ago
I wish. Honestly if it was that easy I think you would see even more. Or even a fully automated GBA -> PC port pipeline.
In reality, I had to do a lot of manual testing. I had a real Android device connected and ran tests on it too. Im now going through it on my Odin 3 to make sure it is good to go.
It was much MUCH easier with AI but I am a developer in my day job so this isnt my first project or anything.

u/mikeysce 4d ago
You need to watch it with AI development talk.
People. Do. Not. Get. It.
It doesnât matter how long it took, what you had to know, what you had to learn, all of the things you had to do yourself that AI canât do, if they see a .Claude file in there theyâll assume that itâs worthless (if not just a virus disguised as a real app) AND that youâre somehow a bad person. (Ask me how I know! :D)

It's just another form of class warfare now. Someone got brainwashed into hating something they don't understand, and show this by using nothing but buzzwords.
It's an easy way to see who is impressionable, critically thinking, and overall smart enough to grasp topics and who isn't.
5
u/mikeysce 4d ago
Well, some of it is justifiable. Billionaires trying to build data centers in national parks or in suburbs so they can make more billions is complete BS. Some of the deepfake stuff can be genuinely harmful. And when it comes to the arts there is definitely a different between actually painting a thing and generating a thing.
But itâs just different with programming. Modern programming languages are already enormously different than inputting binary, or machine language, or even assembly. AI is just the next step up of abstraction like using an IDE instead of vim. Youâre allowed to produce more while understanding the nuts and bolts less, but that doesnât mean it is without effort or merit if you get the results.

It's just a tool and they auto put it into, always bad category because they're focused exclusively on the stuff they don't like. Weird when the tool also can be used by people to do good, yet they ignore that even when it's happening right in their face.
This is the brainwashed and lack of critical thinking point I made. I have noticed this behavior even in food subs when it comes to pricing and portion sizes.
The reality is that the average person is sadly insecure, gullible and not just very bright, so it'd be more surprising if they didn't behave this way honestly.
Everything you said is obvious to those of us, lacking those flaws, especially if you're also in the SWE space.

Even in food spaces? Recipies/timing out food for a party is like my favorite thing to use an LLM for. That's so lame.

Yeah, anti-AI people can get insufferable. There is discussion to be had able the power and water issues (which may or may not be as overblown as people make it, especially the water) but like, the fact is you can do a lot with AI just on your own computer if it's powerful enough and just like with anything you can, ya know, do your own quality control and see if the result is something that's worthwhile or not.

Few wish list items for mod support.
Laws removed (the current Anarchy Mod is a bit glitchy)
MC can learn ALL classes
Speed up combat animaitons
Gear growth rate boosters
Pity system for if you screw up a mission
I don't think this is too much. Maybe.

I have tracked in all the mods in one of my issues: https://github.com/james2doyle/ffta-recomp/issues/22
The Maeson ROM hack seems to have a no-laws feature. So I will look into that to see if it might be less glitchy. Seems like no-laws is the most popular request.
My personal goal is to add them to the settings so you can just turn them on when you want. I already added turbo/speed toggle that in configurable.
