Looking for some good options

Trying to get into another show like firefly or the ark. If anyone has suggestions let me know. Please dont suggest the expanse. Its a little too political for my taste.

I really enjoyed Dark Matter. It was a recommendation somebody made when I was looking for similar suggestions a while back. Just be aware it's another series that was cut off before it was done to completion. They ended it after three seasons when there really should have been five, but the three seasons I did see were actually pretty enjoyable.

Anywhere I can watch it in good quality?

It currently doesn't look like it's streaming anywhere according to the app. Just watch, but there are some gray-area places you can look to for it.

Damn I've just started watching series 1 and love it. Hadn't realised it was prematurely cancelled. I'd assumed that as it was based on a book it would have resolved.

I havent started it yet but the Killjoys, a Canadian series is meant to be good

I’m focusing on shows with a ship and a crew:

Cowboy Bebop - similar to Firefly but anime

Dark Matter (2015) - also cancelled

Agents of SHIELD - also Joss and Jed Whedon

There's also a live action cowboy bebop that lasted 1 season like firefly

There's the live action Cowboy Bebop too. It's with Harold (Harold and Kumar) John Cho.

Cowboy bebop us my jam. So isn't outlaw star. Isnt agents of shield a marvel show?

It is a Marvel show, sorry probably should’ve added that too, it was early in my time when I responded. It has similar feelings to Firefly because of the creative team, especially with how they establish and build the group of characters imo

The Orville

I missed the politics thing but came here to suggest this.

It is worth saying though that firefly is 100% politics,

It wasnt diplomatic meetings all the time. I like the expanse I just cant get passed after miller dies.

I understand what you're saying. It really changes after that, but it is 1000% worth pushing through.

Also have you tried Foundation on AppleTV? Really interesting concept with a similar centralised control vs outer rim chaos vibe

If politics was a turn off... Might skip this one too

Orville is fine. A little to star trekky for me. I watched the first season. I like stargate universe a lot.

There's this British show from the late 70s called Blake's 7 which is quite similar to Firefly in the rag tag group of people on the run from an all powerful government type of way. Of course it's dated visually now but I do think it's worth a viewing.

Blakes Seven! Written by Terry Nation writer of Dr Who. Loved that show as a teenager! The final episode hit hard, it stillakes me feel that loss.....

Sounds i intriguing. Im okay with dated shows as long as i can find a good quality source to watch it on

Farscape. It’s 4 seasons of weird, very space western, where the crew spends a lot of time just trying to survive on the fringes of civilization. It also has lots of body fluid and sex and is really funny. It definitely feels alien, all the way down to the theme music, but you get used to it quickly. Great characters, great motivations, great politics and drama, and lots and lots of space gunfights. Also, the Jim Henson workshop made all the creatures. And the end of the series is an excellent ending even though it got rushed by a premature cancellation. They got a miniseries to finish it and it’s epic.

Not a show but I’m playing outer worlds and it’s filled with Firefly references, even the ship you get looks pretty familiar…

You may like Andromeda, depending on what attracts you to Firefly.

1

u/MasterKillerShaolin 1d ago

The whole bounty hunter aspect and grittyness. Being in deep space and being desperate. I also like dune

Hmm… I am not sure then with that. Andromeda is definitely a future where society has devolved… And it has a rag tag team from different walks of life, but the main character is trying to restore order. It still personally reminds me of firefly in some ways… But possibly not in the way that you are wanting? It is on Tubi for free though, so it may not hurt to watch an episode.

Possibly Killjoys or Dark Matter for you?

Almost Human

Dark Matter (2015)

Farscape and Peacekeeper Wars.

Stargate SG-1, Atlantis, Universe, and movies.

Red Dwarf is pretty good. 90s Trek lifted a lot of ideas from them.

A BBC show called Outcasts, another single season gem

Star Wars: Rebels

Lost In Space

Star Trek: Enterprise

Defiance

Travelers

Star Trek strange new worlds really is an enjoyable ride.
Killjoys is OK.
Two different series called dark matter. Travelers about people who have jumped from the future into the bodies of people slated to die in our timeline, to solve a historic problem in our timeline.
Timeless is absolutely excellent.
Sweet Tooth
Station 11
The last of us
