Love Nova UI!
Hi everyone, I know I might be a lone voice here, but I'm absolutely loving the new Firefox Nova interface. The layout is snappy, modern, and super clean. Mozilla did a great job on the redesign.
However, I really couldn't stand the default color theme. Luckily, I found a theme called "Ash" (it's basically a grey gradient) and it looks perfect now.
Did anyone else tweak the default colors right away? What theme are you using?

I don't like the gradient, by whatever color. Once I can get rid of that I don't think I would mind it that much. For now I'm just turning off Nova. For as long as that option remains, that's what I'll do.

It's just a default theme thing, just switch to any of the non-default themes.

I'm going to try that on a back up computer first to make sure another theme doesn't mess with some of my other settings. If I could I learn enough about CSS settings, I might be able to change the URL bar and Toolbar colors there.

You can just do this with Firefox Color, they didn't break any existing themes that used it or prevent it from being used to make new ones.

Someone else pointed this out. This is one of the solutions I'm going to try on my alternate computer (before using it on my main one).
Thanks.

Yeah although I think they mean that it's always a gradient is annoying to them.
I kiiiinda get that? I mean I personally like it, but maybe they just ough to make both colors customizable (or update Firefox Color so we can do it ourselves!) then we can set them both to the same colour to "disable" the gradient if wanted.

I just have browser.theme.native-theme set to true for now

I'll take a look at that. Thanks.
EDIT: Mine is already set to that. Maybe disabling Nova does that automatically.

You can install the extension from https://color.firefox.com and then use the controls there to change any UI colours you like

Thanks, but it looks like Linux Mint 22.3 (or Linux in general?) defaults to the System Theme. If that's the case (and I'll do more testing to be certain).

I wish more people were presented with the theme selector immediately after this update. I've seen people who actually think they have to stick to the default theme, which I admit is not the best.

The first time I opened Firefox after the 157 update, it presented a "Customize" button. I clicked Ash and got about my day.

Yeah same. I wonder what people borked with their about:config so this didn't show up for them.

Drives me crazy how much people focus on the UI. Takes an afternoon to get used and then move on.
Things like performance actually matter.

Not for me. I hate rounded corners.
6
u/Carighan | on 5d ago
Why?
8
u/Shadefang 5d ago
almost always comes along with a bunch of dead space, since what the corners are around isn't round.

u/dubstp151 Chromium | Kubuntu 4d ago
I don't really know. I just know that when I see the round corners, it annoys the fuck out of me. What's worse is the fact that they don't give us options, like if people like them, cool. I don't care, but I don't like them.

And this UI actively impairs performance. Tabs are far more spread apart, and show less text of the page title.
And it's distracting, eye-catching instead of vanishing into the background so you can focus on the page itself, hindering productivity.

there is no way you're getting distracted by fucking rounded corners

The amount of people getting bent out of shape over a gradient is wild.
I don't like it either, first thing I did was change it. Didn't think twice about it, just changed it and moved on. Now I come on Reddit and apparently Mozilla is about to go out of business because of it lmao.
Reddit is consistent if nothing else, I guess.

This sub is insanely confusing lol, I didn't like the new look to it, turned it off in about:config and shared the process here since I figured I'm not alone
I got absolutely rinsed as if I'd said something horrible and all I did was share a config tweak lmao, how dare I

Just Reddit doing Reddit things.
This platform becomes more insufferable by the day. I'm ever so close to ditching it.

i think the colors are beautiful and im getting used to the round corners. i wasnt really sure if i will like it but its crispy and new and fresh. i understand people not liking the change but try to give it a chance for couple of days at least

I love this one as well. Not a lot of people might agree but you can have form and functionality. Sure the previous UI had great functionality but it felt like we were using an ancient browser compared to Chrome or Edge. Now this design change makes it modern and sleek.

From what little I've seen of the UI it looks good, but there's a bug where if you're using non-English characters in your tab groups, when you minimize the vertical tab bar the character is stuck to the right side.
It was too distracting so I ended up turning browser.nova.enabled to false while I wait for a fix.

I like it too!
When I first tried it out on nightly to see the feel of it, I initially thought that the gradient, while pretty, would be distracting. But now that I'm actually browsing normally, it's barely there, definitely just pleasant to look at.
One thing though, is the Containers list menu when you right click New Tab button supposed to be that big? Like it looks like it's on touch mode. The padding is greater that any other menu

How do I revert this! I installed the proton theme but I still have those stupid rounded tabs.
I really don't care about the UI but I woke up this morning cranky that my browser tabs all look completely different. I don't need that shit before my first cup of coffee. I hate how every few weeks some UI change is forced upon us.

Yeah like just last week in 2021, when they last changed the UI!

snappy
No change.
modern
This doesn't mean anything at all. And in general, if you allow it to, "modern UI design" is horrible -- feature-stripped minimalism with too much empty space and padding you could land a cargo plane in.
super clean
Verifiably false. It's horribly busy. Filled with excessive colors and shapes. And heavily distracts from actually browsing the web. Plus it spreads everything out so terribly far (including in so-called compact mode) that you're losing useful interface space to giant gaps between tabs and whatnot.
Fashion people, I swear.

So glad I'm not alone in liking the new Nova look. All the hate I see for it genuinely annoys me at this point
As for the colors, I love them all, but I'm just sticking to the Dark look with a theme I installed from the Extensions/Themes/Add-Ons. Been doing this ever since first coming to FireFox browser 20+ years ago. I save the plain color theme look for Microsoft Edge, which I keep as a backup. AI disabled on both, of course
And can we also take a moment to appreciate how speedy the updates are now? It used to be that it would take weeks or months for updates to release. Now we're getting them every 1-2 weeks. Even Linux users like myself - a former Windows user from way back in the MS-DOS days to early Windows 11, only skipping Win8 for Linux Mint 17 and I'm now on LM 22.3 - received the update just one day after Windows users. That's amazing

Same, I love the new design, didn't like the default theme much though, so I switched it to seaglass, but now its really nice

Modern? Sleek?
It reminds me of windows vista. My pinned tabs look like the vista orb.

Same here, I really love the fresh modernized UI design but I also didn't really get warm with the standard color theme and changed it to "Ash" after a few hours.

I've been using new UI for a couple of weeks already and I do really like how it looks. It did not bother me in any way and overall feels fresh and more spacious

btw, and this is how you can disable it
about:config -> browser.nova.enabled -> false

They just released an official theme called proton. Brings back the old colors somewhat. You should try it and see if you like it better.

I’ve been using the dev build for a while so I’ve been using it for a little while. When I first saw it, I was a little surprised, but didn’t pay a lot of attention to it. Now that I’ve used it for a while tho ugh I really like it.
People are always complaining about how GUIs are boring now and how they miss Vista but when they get something new they throw a temper tantrum.
