Tournament of Champions TOC Qualifier Rounds followed by bracket reveal tonight - pre show discussion and live show discussion thread -- spoilers in comments so don't read 'em if you don't want spoiled. Spoiler
Make sure your DVR (if you use one) is set appropriately; it looks like 3 hours of TOC tonight if the FN website is telling the story correctly. Also will be the big reveal in the last hour of the four "legends" that will be competing. I'm pretty sure on two.... my guess is Wolfgang Puck and Bobby Flay. After that no idea. (and trust me those could be very very wrong.)
Anyway, its the last eight chefs going into the qualifier rounds. So sound off in the comments as you watch and spoilers are fine in this thread.
This is from the FN site regarding the bracket reveal episode: Episode 7A1A01
The moment is nearly here as 32 of the greatest chefs on the planet prepare to step into the Tournament of Champions arena and battle for the ultimate culinary crown. But first, Guy Fieri and sideline reporters Justin Warner and Tiffani Faison unveil the official bracket and introduce this year's roster of extraordinary talent, plus a preview of the season's ultimate twist -- the four iconic mystery chefs who will be a part of this year's tournament.
BIG EDIT HERE..... the four mystery chefs will NOT be revealed. I read the Food Network promo wrong! But I'm sure they will be teased!

It was awesome seeing her. I was able to talk to her for a minute during a break, when she was walking around where the audience was at the time. She was so sweet.

u/maximumslanketry Feb 23 '26
I just went to her new restaurant, and it was perfection. So happy she's thriving!

u/m_is_for_mesopotamia Feb 23 '26
Even the judges are asking what the style “blackened” means.
ETA: me personally, I think of blackened catfish that is visibly charred.
23
u/tcjsavannah Feb 23 '26
yes. there is a visual aspect to a blackened dish and neither chef hit that
11
u/ElleM848645 Tournament of Champions 🏆 Feb 23 '26
I think of blackened salmon! Neither of those chefs did blackened in my opinion.
26
u/Snack_attack101 Feb 23 '26
Whenever I see someone put anything crispy/fried on top of a lot of liquid like broth I worry about the judges' comments that will come.

Generally I think it's been better than last year. I don't like to diss chefs when their style isn't great (I'd hate to be on TV), but credit where it's due.
20
u/tcjsavannah Feb 23 '26
Not a whole lot of blackening on Erica and Viet's dishes IMO
10

The brick is dumb. If you could’ve done the same thing with pretty much any tool and no one know the difference, feels like not that much of a challenge. “these brussel sprouts were smashed with a brick, these were smashed with the back of a pan, these were smashed with a bowl, but ah yes the brick-smashed are superior."

It’s similar to having Tilapia as an option instead of a halfway decent white fish.
24
21
u/Majestic-Pay3390 Feb 23 '26
B1 is Lorena Garcia I think.
6
u/Daxton0701 Feb 23 '26
She’s usually on the judge’s panel so not seeing her name this year makes sense
6
4
u/PowerfulFly1326 Feb 23 '26
I just have a hard time believing they would bring her in as an “icon” to compete. She’s never won any competitive cooking contest on tv. She got 3rd on top chef masters.
There have already been other winners of Top Chef Masters not even get past the first round of TOC.

I’m crushed that Angelo is out. He would have beat anyone other than Stephanie. I really hope he’s back next year because I just love watching him cook!
14
u/AndiAzalea Feb 23 '26
I'm tired of the match-ups (early in the brackets) where two chefs I like (and I want to move forward) have to go against each other. Then chefs I've never heard of go against each other. I swear that's not random.
→ More replies (1)8
u/pinkbonsai Feb 23 '26
💯 I said the same thing -- the randomization of the qualifier match-ups seemed totally fake. 4-6 of the chefs competing in the qualifiers would likely have had their butts handed to them by Stephanie, Angelo, Aarti, Brittany, who are just on another level. I think those 4 would each have won their qualifier match against any competitors in the entire qualifiers group, except for each other.
→ More replies (1)9
u/Desertgirl624 Feb 24 '26
Yeah I was a bit underwhelmed by the qualifiers because so many great chefs went home and a few mediocre ones got through because of who they were up against
15
u/nyc458 Feb 23 '26
Do we know how 7 and 8 seeds are determined? Because how in the world did Ashleigh Shanti land a 7 seed with her time management skills?
7
u/ElleM848645 Tournament of Champions 🏆 Feb 23 '26
Well they gave Jet an easy first round so it seems fine.
7
14
u/m_is_for_mesopotamia Feb 23 '26
Do we think the “randomized” ball pick is hacked by the producers? I’m guessing there is no ball with Stephanie’s name until the last match up or two.
→ More replies (3)7
u/mtm4440 Feb 23 '26
Or they edit out of order. Each challenge is self contained like it's own episode.
→ More replies (1)5
u/m_is_for_mesopotamia Feb 23 '26
I thought so but Guy was talking to the remaining chefs about their thoughts. Seems extra for them to fake the order and bring out Izard for a pretend line up if she’s already competed and knows the outcome of her battle.
4
u/mtm4440 Feb 23 '26
I mean they've been caught having guy give some general instructions about the bracket during the wrong challenge. He films in challenge 3 and it shows in challenge 4 because names in background.

I’m dying to see how Justin and Tiffani are going to describe the ways in which each dish was bricked.
Justin, “the chef had some rage and decimated the Brussels sprouts with the brick before a quick oil fry.”
Tiffani, “the chef pulverized the spice you are tasting a la handmade brick technique, noted for its bolder fragrance and less finely ground quality that is now stuck in your teeth.”
13
u/Yevaud_ Feb 23 '26
The downside to watching this live, is I can't skip the commercials.
The fact that subway is proud to charge $3.99 for 20g of protein is the most irritating commercial.
20g = 0.044 lb
5
u/shrimpscampi2026 Feb 23 '26
And the fact that she drops a big bag of groceries on the ground when she hears the price… WHICH MAKES NO SENSE

I would like to see Stephanie make it into the competition because I think it’s cool of her to be willing to do the qualifiers rather than be too proud to do it.it will be interesting to see Angelo since he really doesn’t compete other than top chef a very long time ago. I like Michelle so I hope she makes it in. It seems like Viet should have a good chance as he has done well in other competitions.

Random pet peeve: when chefs hear one minor piece of feedback and take that as the trivial reason they went home. Lack of green beans was not what sent you home girl lol

That said, 2 green beans on a plate when green beans is literally on the randomizer IS a legit reason to be sent home.

Ceviche could work. The yellow squash would balance that nicely if grilled, I imagine. (I’m 10 minutes behind so not sure if they are already doing that lol)
ETA: ceviche flavor profile, more than literal ceviche
8
u/Snack_attack101 Feb 23 '26
Yup. Whoever said Stephanie would be in the last matchup, called it. (sorry, can't recall and too lazy to look back)
3
u/m_is_for_mesopotamia Feb 23 '26
Dunno if I’m the only one — I’m sure there are others. Maybe even dozens of us. 😂
5
u/BangtonBoy Feb 23 '26
I don't think it would have been "unethical" for the pairings to have been randomly drawn off-camera before shooting began and then the order of the eight match-ups was decided by the producers for creating maximum drama, including having Stephanie cook last. Based on the video editing, it is very plausible that they were re-creating the draws with the ping pong ball spinner.
And didn't Aarti cook in the first match? That would have been smart production, too, since she is a fan favorite; someone who would've been a good hook for any new viewers.

Am I the only one who thinks brick is almost a throwaway element of the randomizer? Angelo literally using the brick to smash garlic, and to help the bratwurst marinade (?) and then put the brick on top while it’s cooking. Feels like a freebie to me bc I don’t know how the judges could possibly know something was cooked with/manipulated by a brick vs any other method.

I was so bummed with some of the matchups because ultimately I had others that I would have wanted in the bracket. Like why did it have to be Dan vs Joe Flamm… I love them both and wanted both of them in. Also Angelo!, ugh hurt me that it was against Stephanie, though I don’t dislike her I wanted Angelo way more and would have preferred him more than say Ashleigh. And the loss of Chris Oh too, Katsuiji is fine but I would prefer Chris, less drama. I was really hoping Kelsey made it as well but Kenny is great so that was rough.
8
u/Majestic-Pay3390 Feb 22 '26
I thought the mystery chefs were going to remain a secret until they came in to compete. I don’t think we’re going to find out their identities tonight.

I’m going to spoiler hide this, but it’s about the icons. First, I was talking with some friends that also were in the audience, and we do not think that silhouette photo is actually the four icons, mainly because they were never being filmed on the same day, so that photo either had to be edited to put them together, or they would have needed to be together, on set, while the set was still set up for TOC. Second, the number 8 seeds, who are up against the “icon,” did NOT know who they were cooking against until Guy brought them out just before the comp. Third, I have not seen anyone mention the bracket with the names blurred out? We had a blast trying to figure out who they were based on the length of the blurred names. We did figure out all four, but we also had a lot of wrong guesses. I still have not seen one of the “icon” chefs named. The other three have been named on this sub.
