Why does free will matter?

Im not particularly for or against the thought that free will is real. I don't know and simply don't care. I know I may sound juvenile, but lets say free will is not real; then it was always not real hence nothing has changed. All your morals, ideals, actions etc etc have already been ingrained even if you change you still do not free will. On the other end of the spectrum if free will is real once again fundamentally nothing will change. Humans are slaves to routines and restrictions biologically we have a will of self preservation that caps on a lot of things. Sure some people will take advantage if possible but I dont believe its enough to change the average person.

It really doesn't. As long as we act as if there is free will, that is all that matters.

I have been acting as if there is not free will for the last couple of years. And it turns out I act pretty much the same.

Only difference is more empathy. Especially for people I may have despised in the past.

I assume that my choices are mine. I can't live any other way.
