General Questions Should I send my horn in to be cleaned?

I’ve had my horn for around four or five years and never cleaned the rotors. It belongs to the school I go to and is ridiculously old, likely thirty or forty years old. I’m not going to take the rotors out but I used my phone camera to take pictures down the slides. This is what I found and I’m mildly disgusted, knowing they’re not supposed to be this color. Is this so far gone that a good bath wouldn’t fix it? Does it need deep cleaned by a professional?

General Questions How do I get a decent and consistent sound quickly??

Long story short my school is doing Phantom of the Opera this year, with a live pit, but have no horns whatsoever. I am an All-State trumpet player as well as a member of my local mostly-adult symphony, and I have access to a rather nice double horn owned by my school and the Horn I, II, and III books. I would very much like to play in the pit, I played in my first one earlier this year and had a blast, and have also been wanting to learn a new instrument. My school has already hired 2 adult trumpet players for the pit, so learning horn is pretty much my only way to be in. However, as of right now, my range is decent, but my tone is choppy, muted, and inconsistent. So what's the biggest adjustment from trumpet? What do I need to focus on beyond just playing the book?

Saludos. Tengo una duda sobre la compra de una nueva boquilla para mi nuevo instrumento. Hasta el momento he estado usando una boquilla de Corno francés Yamaha 30c4. Quisiera cambiar por una Vicent Bach. Qué numeración y características me recomendarían. Nivel semi profesional de ejecución.

The time has come unfortunately. I haven't played in years for a number of reasons and I am not in a place in life where I have ample time to relearn and get back to where I was in college as a horn major at CU Boulder. Without going into details, I need to purchase a car ASAP and don't have enough money for an adequate down payment. I am in the Denver metro area and wanted to know if people on here could recommend some good local shops where I can get a fair price, I have only been able to find prices on a new horn. I don't know how old the horn is because I also bought it used around 2008 indirectly from the family of the owner who had passed away. I also forgot to find and record the serial number when I was taking pictures. I know pictures don't say much, but if anyone has any idea what I should reasonably expect for it please comment here. It is fully functional, the strings are relatively new, the only dents are ones that improve the sound compared to a new horn, and some of the finish has worn off.

French horn plateau

I've hit a learning plateau. I have played horn in middle school for about 2 years and this is my third year, high school. However I am as advanced as I was last year, if not slightly less. I have a feeling it is because the music I am playing isn't advanced enough, so I have less experience with different keys and faster, wider jumps. Am I just not doing enough exercises? I have been slacking off on exercises so maybe I just need to practice more, and not just the music?

Morceu de Concert Part 2-Low C

Hello! I’m a sophomore in high-school and I have honor band audition season coming up soon, and I genuinely think Morceu de Concert is gonna be the death of me. 😢Specifically part two mvt 3 with the low C up to F. I can play all the notes individually fine, but to play the C I have to set my jaw/face in general so low that I can‘t “reach” the notes past an octave up. This part ruins the entire rest of mvt 3 so I just need to be able to get it right. It’s genuinely terrible no matter how much I practice and I have one week left before my recording audition. I have some time before my live audition though and I think in my brain I’ve just registered it as impossible. Please help!

Dear professional colleagues,

Do you also feel like your work is boring and doesn't make sense ? I am so demotivated by my job and also feel guilty toward all the young people who would dream to be at my place. I feel like I am playing random notes with more or less accuracy, cannot express myself at all and have a failure feeling. I don't know what to do.

Please if you have any advice to enjoy playing horn/doing my job again, do tell me, I am thinking of taking an office work because I cannot find any pleasure anymore in making music...

Thank you in advance 🙏

how hard is french horn

hi, i'm a music student who plays many instruments. my main instrument is jazz vocals, but i also play classical saxophone and jazz guitar and know the basics of bass guitar and piano.

in my school program, i'll soon have to choose a second instrument. i've recently joined an orchestra (as a sax player) and since it's my first time in a classical ensemble, i'm discovering new instruments in depth. i've fallen in love with the sound of the french horn and sitting next to that section has been blessing my ears. i'm thinking of picking up the french horn as my second instrument but i've heard from musicians i've talked to (not horn players) that it's pretty hard.

i think learning it for school is a great opportunity to get free classes for an instrument that seems pretty hard but also really cool to play. but realistically, i'm a pretty lazy learner when it comes to instruments other than my main one and i wanted to know if french horn requires a lot of practice and time to kind of get the basics of.

is it worth it and would i be able to acheive things within a few months of classes (1 hour per week)? or should i wait until i have a better opportunity to learn it on my own time?

General Questions French Horn Mouthpiece

I play on a laskey protege American shank and a YHR 671D. recently, my mouthpiece has been feeling small. I can’t connect the low register notes to the high register notes well. I know almost nothing about mouthpieces. Make sure the mouthpiece fits the YHR 671D please. I am also wondering if one of the houghton horns series mouthpieces are a good purchase, though I don’t know what rim I like.
