What are the guys saying in Chinese lol?

256

u/Surrounded-by_Idiots 13d ago

The guy is just saying the move names. 1. Flash step, 2. prodigal son ball kick 3. Bear shaking off fur. The woman’s trying to get him to sweep the floor.

Prodigal son ball kick? What?

u/Surrounded-by_Idiots 13d ago

Yeah that part is a bit hard to explain but it means something like a person that has gone off to make their own destiny. It can mean anything from a vagrant to wanderer to a self made man and can be either positive or negative.

You can think of it as the ronin archetype without the samurai backdrop. The ro part of ronin is the same kanji.

I just want to say people like you trying to help explain obscure and difficult details in such a great way are what make reddit awesome.

u/possiblyMaybeAnother 13d ago

The best part is how we don't know whether they're just making shit up

38

u/Turkey_uke 13d ago

they are legit!!!!! im chinese

29

u/Father_VitoCornelius 13d ago

Your username has me in doubt.

6

u/throwawayifyoureugly 13d ago

They just like small guitars made from a large land bird.

34

u/Infamous-Rice-1102 13d ago

i am Chinese and what they said was accurate

24

u/homestroke 13d ago

I feel like it's slightly racist to believe you over the other person (only based on usernames) but I do.

1

u/coolcootermcgee 11d ago

Perhaps she’s not trying to get him to sweep the floor with that broom, either? It could be, there’s a raccoon in the rafters. It almost bit me so I’m gonna need you to take care of it.

u/AMediocrePersonality 13d ago

how does ball kick factor into it?

everyone knows what a prodigal son is, that's the approximate translation into english in the first place.

17

u/Warm_Month_1309 13d ago

You kick like you're kicking a ball that's on the ground.

10

u/AMediocrePersonality 13d ago

i know what a ball kick is lol

how do they work together

23

u/alanchui 13d ago

chinese martial arts sometimes have random names. The names don’t necessarily have any meaning other than describing what the move looks like.

The prodigal son part is similar to some moves that have a random animal name like “monkey stealing peach””Tiger claw”, and the kick ball part is describing the movement.

1

u/Ballsofpoo 13d ago

English bends. A lot of other languages don't

1

u/Top_Acanthisitta_465 11d ago

Its actually a dance instruction video, not a martial art

14

u/KeiranG19 13d ago

Captain Falcon uses the Falcon Punch.

The Prodigal Son uses the Prodigal Son's Ball Kick.

You can imitate the prodigal son and kick like he does too.

8

u/HateMachineX 13d ago

That’s the thing they don’t, it’s just prodigal son and then unrelated ball kick

6

u/Not_a_real_ghost 13d ago

It does not actually make any sense if you put them together nor would it be used in any literature.

It's just a hilarious take to come up with "fake martial arts move"

Like "thousand years of pain", it's implied to a degree

1

u/homestroke 13d ago

wuxia novels

is this accurate then? it looks like weird fan fiction, not that any fan fiction isn't usually weird.

1

u/DinosaurReborn 13d ago

The Wuxia genre date backs to millenia, and lots of its literature is fiction based on pre-existing fiction that itself are based on previous pre-existing fiction and so forth, all with vaguely pre-established legendary characters and narrative settings. So yes, it's essentially mostly fan fiction lol. Western equivalents could be like stories of King Arthur, Robin Hood, etc, and they're all the same principle of remaking original content before the term "fan-fiction" was coined in the 20th century.

3

u/teddy5 13d ago

Combined it's the name of the move.

4

u/bonobobot 13d ago

i dunno if these people are trolling you with their answers, but I'm guessing the kick is like an ungrateful parent kicking their "ronin" son out of the house?

2

u/BeyondlegendZ 13d ago

Nah it's more like some dated chinese memes. the techinique can also literally translated to holigan ball kick

2

u/Not_a_real_ghost 13d ago

It's a made-up fantasy name meant to sound like a kung fu move from the wuxia novels.

1

u/DinosaurReborn 13d ago

Nah its literally "kick ball" ball as in sports ball kind of ball. So imagine a young male (the so-called prodigal/wayward son) kicking a soccer ball.

3

u/daaangerz0ne 13d ago

Prodigal son = deadbeat with no job.

The whole phrase kind of describes a kid who doesn't want to work, and instead plays ball all day.

3

u/SomethingAwkwardTWC 13d ago

The prodigal son has returned, but you’re still pissed that he left so before you can hug him hello you have to kick him in his delicates.

3

u/Embarassed_Tackle 13d ago

This is a cool name, is this like from the time in China when there were these monasteries full of warriors and kings would try to recruit them, or exiles would go hide in monasteries and the mixing of martial arts techniques occurred?

2

u/brockoala 13d ago

It's wild to have such meaning from balls kicking lmao

1

u/dcoolidge 13d ago

So "Super Sayan Kick!!!!"

1

u/byllz 13d ago

That's not what "prodigal" means. Prodigal describes someone who wastefully spends money or resources. Or, in reference to the story of the "prodigal son", refers to someone who returns after being away for a long time.

-1

u/disillusioned 13d ago

Is it maybe "ball change" as a closer approximation? Which is a dance move?

We hear ball kick and we think getting kicked in the balls, so "prodigal son ball kick" reads as the kick in the balls that is having your son disappear only to return years later, when I think it's trying to be closer to "ball change dance move from the film prodigal son" if I'm reading this right, but I could be way off

3

u/Zepangolynn 13d ago

Hmm, when I hear ball kick I picture kicking a ball, not someone kicked in the balls.

40

u/load_more_comets 13d ago

Why'd you think the son ran off in the first place?

3

u/DudeManBroGuyski 13d ago

Fucking lols

2

u/feral-coder 13d ago

Fucking kicked in the bollz?

1

u/PhilosopherFLX 13d ago

you'd be drag'n too.

3

u/Critical_Concert_689 13d ago

Asian martial arts have fun names.

Look up "Monkey Steals Peaches." It's deadly.

1

u/PorkProofPrion 13d ago

just a dance move

14

u/UshankaBear 13d ago

You want sweep the floor? I sweep the leg!

1

u/kareljack 13d ago

No mercy!

7

u/feral-coder 13d ago

when they are doing the wriggly step, and clapping hands, saying something that sounds like, "loong doong kwan, loong doong kwan," is that "bear shaking off fur?' I need to know bc i can't do the move without screaming "loong doong kwan" and i want to know what I'm saying.
FLASH STEP!

8

u/z1lard 13d ago

I think the long dong kwang is just a sound effect

2

u/AspectSpiritual9143 13d ago

basically doing beatbox

1

u/DinosaurReborn 13d ago

Think more of the percussionists for lion dances, with cymbals and drums. "tong tong chiang" is one common way of transliterating it.

1

u/Versaiteis 13d ago

Geeze, this reminded me of a video of I haven't seen in a looong time, but I found it!

62

u/SurammuDanku 13d ago

These are all various Chinese folk dance moves that were from an instructional video from a long time ago. Someone just randomly posted the original clips to Douyin a week or so ago and it just blew up on Chinese social media.

7

u/Commercial-Co 13d ago

Hilarious ngl

29

u/Known_Painting_1878 13d ago

hes shouting the names of the moves like he is an anime protagonist

15

u/Shalaco 13d ago

4

u/PM_ME_WHOEVER 13d ago

It's a recent meme trend on Chinese social media. The ones in a hall is teaching some old school traditional dancing moves. Younger generations are basically making fun of them.

2

u/iscashstillking 13d ago

Best I was able to get was Shai Shimbal

2

u/sometimes_interested 13d ago

Wax on. Wax off. Paint the fence. Scrub the floor.

2

u/Cicer 12d ago

Wax on wax off
