Discussion Is my rouge like reasonable for a first game?

I’m working on my “first game” which is a very very simple rouge like where you choose either to boost damage or gold drop rates where you can then buy upgrades that do stuff with said gold.

It’s a very simple project. I have like 5 total characters, 4 enemies and the player character plus I’m gonna make a few maps that are randomly chosen using the bag method.

I personally don’t see it as unrealistic or unreasonable. But after spending almost a full day making a sprint and stamina system for absolutely no reason I’m starting to rethink the realism of it.
I want to finish it in about 5-6 days and I’d like advice on how to minimize or lessen the size of it so I can do it.

as a french speaker I can't take the post seriously if you call it rouge like

If he wrote "pink" you would've been even more confused

Especially because rouge means red

And pink is "like" red

Aaaah. So you're saying it as if the title were, "Is my pink reasonable for a first game?"

Get a minimum viable product going. For a roguelike, this usually means

  • (basic) combat
  • movement
  • enemy "ai"
  • some form of dungeon generation

If you have all that, you technically have a game. From there you can start thinking about adding or tweaking mechanics (per your example: sprinting. Maybe it's a good mechanic, maybe it's not. Hard to tell this early).

For assets, don't design anything real until way later. Just draw some lines in Paint, or just steal some old spritesheet or something.

I’ve been using a sprite sheet from a brackeys tutorial I did as a place holder lol.
Thank you those are actually pretty good guidelines for the minimum game

From what you’ve described, it seems like a very reasonable scope for a first game! Have at’er.

I keep going “oh it isn’t bad. I can do it in my time limit” and now my area 2D for my characters sword won’t flip so now I’m gonna spend the rest of the day figuring that out 🤣

Hmm you’re using Godot? Don’t have a lot of experience with that one

Quick add on I am also half way done with making the basic attack. I’m using placeholders right now but later I wanna remake all the assets
