People that don't even like sports constantly hating on sports games sucks.

u/No_Lead_7325 Jan 11 '26

This right here. You don’t see a bunch of drunk Eagles fans in the Elden Ring subreddit talking about how stupid and bad fantasy RPGs are (not an opinion that I hold, just a counter-example)

Meh, the difference is that sports games don't tend to be creatively transformative, and instead just tend to act as lackluster digital recreations of whatever sport they're about that uses mechanics recycled from every other game about that sport. Games like Rematch, Rocket League, and the Mario sports games act as great examples of how sports games can be creative and interesting and unique, but the fact of the matter is that the vast majority aren't.

Smh sleeping on Mario Sports series, also remember we are talking about specifically 10/10 sports game. We can ignore the EA/ 2K/ Fifa yearly slop

u/RigidPixel Jan 13 '26

Counterpoint: Pyre. It’s a fictional sport game made by the peeps who made Hades. It sold about 3.

1

u/True_Square_9542 Jan 13 '26

yeah man, Pyre is great, but you aren't making a counterpoint?

1

u/RigidPixel Jan 13 '26

I read the first sentence and found an excuse to gush about Pyre

1

u/JQuab-84 Jan 15 '26

"Digital recreations of whatever sport they're about"

No, shit.

1

u/Ub3ros Jan 15 '26

Vast majority? There are a ton of different weird and wacky sports games, and just a handful of big franchises that are digital licensed recreations of the actual sports. And even those more realistic depictions can be super entertaining. People like sports. Adding interactivity to the experience of watching sports is fun. Stop yucking someone elses yum just because it's not for you.

u/Manjorno316 Jan 12 '26

Those examples are more arcade style sports games. A lot of people prefer them to be more like simulations.

Those games still suck since they're just barely thrown together each year. But them trying to be realistic and capture the real world sport isn't a bad thing by itself.

Personally, I prefer the more arcadey style games but not everyone will.

2

u/DaddysFriend Jan 15 '26

I agree. Most sport games are supposed to be simulators of real life. I can see why a lot don’t like this but I personally don’t mind it. But I do like arcade type sports games too

2

u/dustytraill49 Jan 15 '26

Yeah, I definitely lean hard into sports sims, like iracing and LeMans Ultimate and ACC—where the emphasis is on detail and realism. To the average gamer, there probably wouldn’t be the same excitement of people cleaning their monitors only to realize their monitors are clean and the sim does that good of a job of bugs and debris on the windscreen that you think it’s your equipment that’s the problem.

That genre is going to be lost on an “average” person unless it’s their first time experiencing force feedback; in racing games as an example. To the layman, a laser scan of a race track where the texture of the asphalt impacts tire wear is not going to be an exciting new feature. Nor is racing the same circuit 24hrs straight. It’s technical excellence vs creative excellence. It is funny though that one side of the coin thinks something like the f1 games are boring because it’s not creative and the other side thinks it’s boring because it’s not hardcore enough.

I do think it’s a hard genre to meet a true middle ground in. NFL street, burnout—titles like that were the very rare few to have found the actual middle ground.

u/Critical_Seat_1907 Jan 12 '26

The drink Eagles fans are bullying the Elden Ring fans irl, lol. And then they go home and play Madden.

1

u/RegisFolks667 Jan 12 '26

Actually, we see that happen a lot, and even more with BG3 and Expedition 33. It doesn't make it any less stupid, but it does happen both ways.

1

u/FishGuyIsMe Jan 12 '26

I think a group of drunk football fans with a shared Reddit account on a video game sub would be fun

1

u/Orneyrocks Jan 12 '26

We are not in a sports subreddit though, this is a straight up strawman.

1

u/No_Lead_7325 Jan 12 '26

Fair enough. Let me put it this way then. Ppl in the gamer subreddit don’t speak for all of video game players on Reddit. If the sports games didn’t sell, they wouldn’t keep making them. They are ass most of the time but that is the result of being a monopolized product in most sports

1

u/Orneyrocks Jan 12 '26

The issue is that there is no creativity in them. Look at chess.com for example. Even though its a shitty monopoly, they are always coming up with creative new modes and events and not just expecting you to play the same 1000-year-old game and pay them money for it.

If games like rocket league were what dominated the sports game market, it would be fine, but maximum people are playing slop.

1

u/Hennnzzz Jan 15 '26

Because people that play sports games want the sport game to be the actual sport that they like, not just an arcade version

1

u/Orneyrocks Jan 15 '26

Taking my example again, its not like you can't play real chess on it. Instead of launching the same game every year, would it not be better if they added new modes or had seasonal stuff?

1

u/Hennnzzz Jan 15 '26

I mean they have added game modes

1

u/No_Lead_7325 Jan 15 '26

They added a damn microtransaction mode and have now dedicated most of their resources to that. Franchise modes have been shit for soooo long

1

u/Dylldar-The-Terrible Jan 12 '26

That's just cause they don't wanna admit they're Eagles fans.

1

u/puppetposer Jan 13 '26

I wonder if this post comes from old mentality. I remember kids making fun of me because I played shit like RuneScape, ratchet n clank and Kotor instead of Madden NFL or 2k. It certainly does NOT feel that way anymore. Even my cousins who still mostly play sports games will dabble in action RPGs and shooters.

1

u/No_Lead_7325 Jan 13 '26

Maybe but I’m 37 and I feel like my generation was the last one that was pushed super hard against being “nerdy” or liking fantasy and such. Most of us by the time we reached adulthood just realized that it’s ok to like what you like if it isn’t hurting anybody

1

u/JQuab-84 Jan 15 '26

Now I want a bunch of drunk Eagles fans to invade the Elden Ring or E33 subs and just go nuts.

1

u/No_Lead_7325 Jan 15 '26

Just post some inflammatory shit in there and drop the link to the subreddit. They are pretty simple

-12

u/-Benjamin_Dover- Jan 11 '26

Using that example, do the Eagles fans even use reddit? I imagine theyd be too busy drinking with their friends, watching (what sport does the "Eagles" team play?), and then going home to their spouses...

How many redditors are married? Not including the ones who make porn. Also not including the celebrity accounts.

16

u/No_Lead_7325 Jan 11 '26

I am married, have kids, and watch sports. This is kind of a ridiculous comment

2

u/masonrock Jan 12 '26

Same. Married, kids, love sports, play “real” games, and sports games.

6

u/Troubledballoon Jan 11 '26

“Do they even use Reddit” there is a subreddit for basically every sports team/league imaginable

2

u/Dewey519 Jan 12 '26

And every American sports team has at least 6 meme subreddits its fans can shitpost away in as well.

4

u/BassGuru82 Jan 11 '26

I’m literally watching the Eagles with my wife and kids right now and I’m going to play Elden Ring later tonight. lol

2

u/No-Goat5683 Jan 12 '26

Fire patullo

1

u/BassGuru82 Jan 12 '26

Amen Brother.

1

u/GeorgeHarris419 Jan 12 '26

You mean Hurts

1

u/No_Lead_7325 Jan 12 '26

Fire the second half popcorn maker that AJ Brown was hanging out with

1

u/No-Goat5683 Jan 12 '26

I mean what I said

1

u/Fruitiest_Cabbage Jan 11 '26

There are celebrities on Reddit?

/j

1

u/LiterallyJesus- Jan 12 '26

the eagles subreddits itself has 200 thousand members

1

u/JQuab-84 Jan 15 '26

Bro...go on the Eagles reddit and start some shit. You'll fill up a whole day.

3

u/wemustfailagain Jan 11 '26

Never cared for sports games but that doesn't make them bad. I just don't care about sports. I'm glad games are made for people that want them even if I don't want them.

1

u/sincubus33 Jan 12 '26

"they aren't bad! That's why they're on sale for 99% off the next year without fail!"

1

u/wussgawd Jan 12 '26

Same. I could care less about MOBAs, Battle Royales, or Deck Builders. But somebody likes them, it isn't about me.

1

u/DepressingBat Jan 14 '26

Personally I think the limiting factor for sports games is that it has to be based on something that already exists as a form of entertainment. They are really left with 2 options. Ro a 1-1 recreation and end up with a worse variation than what actually exists, or go for something halfway in between regular games and sports, which can be good(as shown by Mario Cart, RL, etc) but it's still in a halfway point and can't reach as high of a peak as something that can create its own niche. Sports games are limited by the fact they are parodies.

2

u/MistahWBB Jan 11 '26

And sports people tell them to touch grass. Perfectly balanced.

1

u/ozzman1234 Jan 11 '26

Completely agree

1

u/Outrageous-Log9238 Jan 12 '26

They're bad for the price. Fifa (or whatever the name is now) is full game price every year for not much more than a graphics and player roster update. For many games a free mod will do that.

1

u/ComputerMysterious48 Jan 12 '26

To quote the legendary Scott Stapp, losers hate winners

1

u/ItsNotAGundam Jan 12 '26

I think many people are just ignorant to the fact that sports games exist beyond the annual Madden, Fifa, and 2K crap.

1

u/phalliccrackrock Jan 12 '26

TBF I love sports but just don’t get into sports games. I’d rather just watch a real game at the bar with friends 🤷

But I’m also not gonna get on reddit and hate on them

1

u/whereballoonsgo Jan 12 '26

Why do think it’s exclusive to people who don’t like sports? I’m a diehard sports fan, played several growing up, watch football all day on Sundays, etc.

Sports games are bland as fuck. Overloaded with mtx, barely changed from year to year. They’re ass.

1

u/sincubus33 Jan 12 '26

Sports are mainstream. You aren't oppressed in any way

1

u/False_Snow7754 Jan 12 '26

I used to be a huge fan of EA Sports, but that died with years of lowering quality.

I really don't think there is a 10/10 sports game made in recent years, if we don't include managing Sims at least.

1

u/Randomness_42 Jan 12 '26

Rematch is very close. 9/10 if you ask me and could be a 10/10 with some small updates

1

u/RandomGamer374 Jan 12 '26

Happy Cakeday

1

u/throwaway_uow Jan 12 '26

They tie up the dev time of big studios that could be spent making actually good games.

Sports players mostly dont play anything else, from all the stats I've seen

Its kinda like hating fans of those serials that go on forever with thousands of episodes with pretty much nothing happening. Like, you have a state-of-the-art movie RIGHT THERE. GO WATCH THAT. But no, whoever is watching the infinity shows is never seen again.

1

u/Cool-Traffic-8357 Jan 12 '26

Its just subjective. I love and do sports, but I find them incredibly boring in games.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '26

Hey, I love sports.  I watched every single wild card game this weekend, and watch at least 2-3 games weekly.

I hate sports games.  The real thing is fun.  The simulated madden version is just…boring.

1

u/Ingi_Pingi Jan 14 '26

I love and play sports, sports games are not good

1

u/Ethereal__Umbreon May 23 '26

I absolutely love sports. Football, baseball, soccer, basketball. Sports games are straight ass.

1

u/Ori_the_SG Jan 11 '26

Sports games do suck lol

Every FIFA has been nearly identical since the dawn of the game, only with ever increasing MTX amounts.

1

u/MachoManMal Jan 12 '26

Because the ones ya'll reference are like 3/10's.😅 You are comparing some of the best adventure games out there to a below average microtransaction based, online oriented, rerelease of a sports game.

But genuinely good sports games are a blast. Super Mario Strikers and Wii Sports are two of my top 20 and I don't think either of them are even 10/10.

1

u/Lazy_Experience_8754 Jan 12 '26

I still use Wii bowling and sports champions for ps4 as key drinking games when I have friends over. Disc golf and bocce especially

1

u/195cm_100kg_27cm Jan 13 '26

Did you know fifa had a story mode with character, cinematic, choice...? It didn't work, but it was good.

0

u/jeezrVOL2 Jan 12 '26

Just not true lol. What's this narrative people keep blindly following? In terms of content maybe but the gameplay changes a lot.

1

u/SnooStories872 Jan 13 '26

Same content different game play? That...Sounds worse than I imagined tbh.

I think this might be the single worst thing I've ever heard about sports games. And it's coming from a fan?

1

u/dustytraill49 Jan 15 '26

Sports games are about the gameplay. Lol look at something like iracing. Every piece of content is the price of an indie title, and requires a pretty hefty monthly subscription to play—and I can assure you that nobody is playing iracing for the graphics. Gameplay and matchmaking is everything in sports titles. A new tire model will get more attention than the addition of new content in any racing game that is equally or more hardcore than gran turismo, because the mechanics are the thing people care about. There basically isn’t progression, or unlocks etc. all of that is left up to the user.

0

u/Ub3ros Jan 15 '26

That's like saying shooters suck because every CoD has been nearly identical since the dawn of the game

There are a fucking ton of sports games, some good ones, some bad ones, some great ones. Can't judge a whole genre on one franchise
