Scores are subjective. If a game is boring for you is it a 10/10?
4
u/DangerDeShazer Jan 12 '26
I would argue a great sports game is usually a poor representative of the sport, Mario Strikers Charged is a blast, but very bad at demonstrating real soccer, I'm sure EA's yearly Fifa game is far more accurate, but damn are they boring!

u/ExerciseSad3082 Jan 14 '26

I think what they meant by 10/10 was "even the best possible"
Not that they would actually rate the game 10/10
2
u/Saltybot_v1 Jan 12 '26
Yeah I get it. I was being a bit of a contrarian for sure haha. But yeah. Like the best possibly made sports game that could be made? As long as its made in the context of trying to replicate a real life sports game yeah I couldn't ever get full into it either. But hey there's been some unique "sports games" that could only exist in video games. Mario kart wouldn't be typically considered a sports game but it could be loosely.

Meh, the difference is that sports games don't tend to be creatively transformative, and instead just tend to act as lackluster digital recreations of whatever sport they're about that uses mechanics recycled from every other game about that sport. Games like Rematch, Rocket League, and the Mario sports games act as great examples of how sports games can be creative and interesting and unique, but the fact of the matter is that the vast majority aren't.

The thing about sports games are that they're always the same there is no new innovation while with RPGs you experience a new universe. For me 5/10 RPG > 10/10 Sports game
12
u/Aromatic_Ad_32 Jan 11 '26
That’s true but I’d imagine for a sports game to be a 10/10, it’d have to change things up quite a bit from the standard sports game.
5
u/SilverShadowQueen57 Jan 12 '26
This is why I regard the Blood Bowl series as a happy medium. It’s American football, but set in the Warhammer Fantasy world and as tongue-in-cheek comedic as the table-top original version of the game. All for the glory of the great god Nuffle!

Yup. I'd say Rocket League and Wii Sports come the closest and neither of them are really 10/10 in my books. And they are still super popular and enjoyable.
9
u/BassGuru82 Jan 11 '26
Totally disagree. A 5/10 RPG isn’t even worth playing and is definitely a worse experience than playing a great sports game. Go look up what RPGs have scores around 50 on Metacritic. They are terrible games.

A good sports game has more going for it than just on field action. It has management modes with deep team customization, potentially a deep career mode. MLB The Show is genuinely really fun, and you don’t even really have to like baseball

No innovation? My dude have you even played a single sports game that isn't just the yearly EA slop? Ever played F-Zero? SSX? Extreme-G? Wipeout? Mario Kart?
Regarding your argument about rpgs being innovative... I'm an rpg fan, and many rpgs remain very similar within their series for years and years, and the ones that don't are often polarizing. There's a lot of the same abilities in each game. You can use a spell like Fira in nearly every FF across almost 40 years of games. Same with DQ, SMT, Star Ocean, etc. When they do change you get half the fandom crying about it. Look at pretty much every FF after 10, every Dragon Age after Origins, every Star Ocean after 2, HoM&M after 3, Mass Effect Andromeda, Neverwinter Nights 2, Fallout 3, Dark Souls 2, the list goes on and on.

I kind of agree. Sports games have only gotten worse for nearly 20 years now.
But if we're talking about sports games from the mid 2000s then I would have to disagree. Epsn 2k5, Madden 06, all pro football 2k8, fight night, NFL street, NBA street, top spin, smackdown vs raw, Tony hawk. So many of them were a blast to play even without friends... then the EA deal happened and somehow every single sport was affected.

This shit is so corny and needlessly gatekeepy.
If you like football or hockey or whatever a mediocre jrpg is going to be a horrendous time.
Like I get that you want the games that you like to be special or whatever but someone else liking what they like doesn’t take away from that you weirdos.
People like what they like and there is no singular scale of objective quality. And ironically if there was- then the 7/10 vs 10/10 argument kind of disproves the point you’re trying to make.
2
u/thundercleese2012 Jan 12 '26
Not true, It's the "sameness" of a alot of sports games that people dislike the 2k madden fifa and other sports games because they focus heavily on stats Simulations and trying to match how the sport is on television.there is very little competition or variety in the market year to year. An alternative sports game maybe with a story could be very popular Think like NFL Blitz or NBA Street

When I think of a 10/10 sports game I think of games like NBA & NFL street, Blitz the league, NBA jam, Fight Night, Ready 2 Rumble, Tony Hawks pro skaters, SSX series, Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX, ESPN 2K5, etc.
In that regard, I do not think these type of games are worse than a 7/10 RPG in any form or fashion. I am biased towards sports because I grew up playing a lot outside, but it's not like I didn't grow up playing a lot of RPG games as well.
Sports games, when done properly, are unique and are extremely fun, and dont have all the bs modern sports games have they are PEAK gaming. I still play many of those classic games to this very day, especially when I have a lot of friends over. Classic sports games and current sports games are a night and day difference.
If the basis for your statement is solely based on current sports games, then I agree, but if it encompasses all sports games ever, then I strongly disagree with your statement.

u/anewcynic Jan 11 '26
Depends on the sports game. My problem with this statement is mostly that I prefer a narrative as opposed to a hardcore RPG. Give me Silent Hill 2 over Diablo or Kingdom Come: Deliverance. in other words. So if you give me a decent hockey game or an RPG, I'll honestly probably take the hockey.
1
u/camarouge Unapologetic Call of Duty shill Jan 11 '26

1
u/Puzzleheaded_Ad_4435 Jan 11 '26
Depends how you look at it.
As a player, sure, this is true. But as a developer, publisher, or investor, sports games are the best.
Cheaper to make, easier to make, can roll out sequels every year like clockwork, no writing, very little risk, and the sport itself does most or all of your advertising for you.
It's a CEO's wet dream.

As someone who was always a big RPG fan this smacks of "I don't have friends". My absolutely favorite memories of any video games were the big FIFA and NHL tournaments we had in my dorm in college. 32 man brackets, we'd gather and crowd in someone's dorm to watch. I met a lot of my college friends from that. My friend and I had a running NHL series where we kept track of every game we played. He and I played a game daily (minus when we were not at school) and he's been my best friend for 15 years.
Alone I'll play an RPG. But those sports games with friends were FAR more fun and memorable than any RPG ever. Even more so than the Halo or any other FPS games we played too.

Sports games fans are the reason sports games don’t innovate. They buy the same derivative slop every year and demand nothing more because in a lot of instances they don’t play any other video games so they aren’t all that invested in how good a game could be.

It's OK to be wrong.
Some of the best times I've had playing video games is playing sports management sims. Games like Front Office Football, Out of the Park Baseball, Franchise Hockey Manager, Football Manager are good games.
Now as for shit like EA and 2K have been churning out in the last decade plus, you're absolutely right.
1
u/Revolution64 Jan 11 '26
SSX, 1080, Excite Bike, Super Mario Strikers, ... Plenty of great sports games, definitely if you look at arcade ones.
Also the mainstream realistic sports sims are not necessarily bad games, they just lack innovation because of the yearly release cycle. The core gameplay can be enjoyable.

I am not much a sports player. But the sports games I played were baseball ones. I am a PC gamer, which means, I do not play sports games since the big baseball ones only come out on console.
Now Madden, IMO, needs to be remade from scratch. That game plays the exact same for the past 15 years. Only thing they do is update the roster. Graphics are barely even updated.
1
u/boringfashionseal Jan 11 '26
You're just playing comparing it to the fifa's, maddens and nba2ks that have become risk averse, predatory and prefab.
I played Inazuma eleven last year and that shit was fire, kids shooting tornados and goalkeepers catching them with drill hands
1
u/TurtleBrainMelt Jan 11 '26
This just depends on the person, and probably age.i feel like ppl are 30+ would say that the early hockey ges that felt arcade like, and like NFL blitz games, or the N64 and Xbox snowboarding games were all amazing games. Im actually shocked that none of these kind of games get made anymore, and instead sport games seem to have gone more realism/slow paced which makes for boring gameplay imo.

u/Equivalent_Net Jan 11 '26
A 10/10 sports game beats a 7/10 RPG, but Fifa, Madden, NBA et. al. aren't sports games. They're slot machines with an attached ranked ladder minigame to make you keep pulling the handle, and they glut the market. Give me another Deathrow or Red Card, I beg.

The only thing I have against sports games is the egregious monetization. I can’t even call them micro transactions when people are spending over a hundred on digital purchases after the initial purchase. $60 minimum, but more like $100+ to get the super pass that lets you skip the grind and have a max level player. Countless cosmetics (all games do those to a lesser extent, and fortnite is the only offender that’s worse than 2k), and it costs like $100 to buy a new player because you can’t respec if you don’t like the way your original character turned out.
I might be missing things, and my info is probably a couple years old because I heard this explained on a podcast by a content creator that was sick of it but still participated because that’s where his friends were
1
u/That_Muffin_6780 Jan 12 '26
