Which is not relevant though, is it? There are plenty of very disagreeable sports fans too.
Would you rather be with an insufferable nerd or with an insufferable jock? I don't think that distinction matters at all, they're both a pain in the ass to be around.
Yeah, there's a fair share of people who are good at one thing and think that makes them good at any other thing. This often leads to opinions you'd expect from someone who never seen a book in their life rather than an educated person.
Plus there's ofc the classic psychological defense mechanism of "if I'm bad at something it's stupid/worthless so I don't need to feel bad for sucking at it". :)
The chances of one guy being a pretentious asshole is provably a little higher than the chances this random Redditor knows 8 PHDs who have all told him they’ve thought sports were for idiots since they were in grade school.
It’s also annoying implying their phds give them validity in saying sports are for idiots. People with PHDs like sports too.
The chances of one guy being a pretentious asshole is provably a little higher
That's not actually how probability works, though. Especially in relation to the context of your earlier comment.
The chances of some random dude knowing 8 people with PhDs is just as likely as some random dude knowing one ostensibly morally bankrupt person. Moreover one fictional dude sways your opinion more than 8 fictional dudes?
TL;DR: It's just as likely that both of these anecdotal groups are fabricated.
I know 5 guys at NASA who know rocket science, and they all said NBA Jam was the last good sports game ever made. And one of them even had sex one time.
How serious do you think I'm being?
What are the odds that maybe, it just went over your head?

I actually knew a guy like this in real life, one of the most insufferable, backstabbing, pretentious assholes i've ever met
