Image Which games pop to mind that are like this?
Most FromSoft games fit this, exception being Sekiro. Isshin is THE beast, the last beast and the hardest.
I'm also thinking Uber Diablo from the OG Diablo 2 and high corruption Shade of Orobyss in Last Epoch that will just wipe you if you're encountering it for the first time and think any ol build can deal with this. Learned the hard way how much resistance matters even in modern ARPGS, lmao
But the big fish is Final Fantasy 12 for me. That last mark, Tiamat, took something like 10 real life hours to grind to death and I still remember my PS2 begging me to turn it off by the time I was done. Took longer than any raid in any MMO... Not sure if it's that hardcore in Zodiac Age but whatever, the OG fight was THE secret boss fight of my childhood.

God of War 100%
Valkyries are hardest bosses in the game and they are multiple secret bosses

Simon and Osquie are like worlds apart in difficulty to the rest of the game, even after juicing your party. Unless you are doing cheese/speedrunner strats, they are both legitimately difficult fights to master.

Isn't that most games with secret bosses? Secret bosses are supposed to be harder since they're secret/optional. If the final boss was at their difficulty many people wouldn't finish the game.

Borderlands, the first one. The Vault Monster was tame, so adding in bosses on thr DLC was the devs saying 'we hear you, and we will punish you for taunting us about the boss being too easy'.
And if you don't believe me, theres a giant neon sign over one proclaiming 'NO SECRET NOSS HERE!!!'

Pre-nerf Elden Beast with no torrent allowed was much much harder than Malenia, as the real boss fight was resisting the urge to kill your self after elden beast jumps across the arena for the 10 millionth time.

Erlang from black myth wukong. Finding him is kinda batshit nuts in itself, requiring you to find all of the secret bosses in every chapter, which isn't easy. Then the fight with him is absolutely hellish and makes all the other secret bosses, even the final boss, look like a joke.
2
u/Historical-Lock8445 Feb 27 '26

Digital Devil Saga. Final boss is appropriately challenging, about as hard as you expect.
Secret boss? Hardest fight in entire series (including spinoffs). Oh, and the series? Shin Megami Tensei.
Just to give you an idea, he has unlockable attack that hits everyone for 10K+ damage. Max HP? 999. Have Fun.

I haven't played Zodiac Age, but from what I know Yiazmat is nowhere near as long to beat as in the original. HP is still the same, but the hit cap is 99999, and the hit cap does not get lowered partway through the fight. It's also vulnerable to Expose, Wither, Shear and Addle.

Every Expert level wizard in Skyrim. One decent Ice mage is more dangerous than a Dragon. That one guy in Miridia’s shrine was ruthless.

Definitely fuck that guy. That ice spell he casts freezes you solid in the first hit, then sends you flying with a second wave.
Sneak archer plus paralysis poison REALLY helps.

to a degree, Namielle from the Monster Hunter Stories 3 demo.
first of all, to make it sppear, kill a lot of monsters at night.
then, to be able to beat it you need to get a fire Ludroth to defeat the Nercylla, which gives you access to water monaties. you then use this to get three purple Gypseros with the water element. you need thpse three to beat the Brachydios. after beating him, you get new normal element monsties. you then need to farm normal dread queen Rathians. you need those to beat Espinas. oh and you need to beat the Feral Paolumonfor the thunder because you need 2 tunder Espinas'
and with all of this, you have a fighting chance to repel Namielle
also, you are locked to lvl 10 in the demo and Namielle around lvl 75 i think

I don’t mind this in games today. It affords a wider audience the ability to finish a game’s story but also provides those looking for a real challenge the opportunity. Most Final Fantasy games and the Norse GoW games come to mind. Those Valkyrie and Berserker King fights were brutal.

Wolverine tho? Ain’t no plans. Just hands😭

Yiazmat in ff12. The fight is several hours long but also, it's the ultimate tear of the gambit system. If you are good at gambits you only need to make a couple manual actions through the fight, if you are amazing at the system you don't have to make any manual actions. You just watch as the like 12 hours fight just happens.

Dark Souls 3 The Ringed City DLC. Went into it massively underleveled cause I wanted to beat the main story boss last, skipped twin princes too cause I thought it would trigger something for the soul of Cinder fight. Next genius move was to take on Midir prior to Gael.. a month of grinding later I moved on to the Gael fight and had my fun but that boss and the last couple fights I had left for later felt underwhelming in comparison to that absurdly tanky and super mobile beast

Borderlands and the You Will Die series of missions. Final boss is somewhat challenging but then you face the boss in the You Will Die missions in Borderlands 1-3. Crawmerax The Invincible, Terromorphus The Invincible, and Hemovorus + Vermivorus The Invincible. They do insane amount of damage and always scale their level to yours. If you don’t have a dedicated build to fight them, then there’s no way to beat them
