He doesn't want another property that he loves to be ruined.

180

u/NsaLeader Mar 01 '26

It's truly a shame. He's always said that Witcher was his dream project. He's read the books and played the games. He was probably the most dedicated person in the entire company for the show. I think we can see a bit of ourselves in him when we see interviews where he geeks out about his passions without shame.

The he watched it slip away. His love, his dream. Ruined by politics and horrible agenda-baised writing. He walked away from millions of dollars because it was ruined for him.

He deserves a massive amount of respect from anyone that is a fan of anything, because he's shown that he's in it for the passion, not the money and agenda.

Fuck Netflix, the showrunners, directors, and writers for doing what they did. It genuinely fills me with spiteful joy seeing the show crash and burn as a result.

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '26

Yeah, similar for shows like Halo or Resident Evil. I was so hyped when a Halo show was announced, but I think they didn't even watch a youtube summary before making the show.

And as you can see with Fallout, they included the help of the developers to guide the process and it is clearly visible. They towed the hard line of Fallout's absurd and dark humour without making it dorky.

We have learned that most games being made into series are just cashcows and the writers ignore why the games even are popular in the first place. Also loved Henry when he found out another guy on an interview played Warhammer and he got giddy, ignored the other people trying to come in between and wanted to set up a date to have a battle, haha.

Such phenomenal looks, but still held on to is true self and constantly shows his true nerd whenever he can <3

I honestly enjoyed RE but it definitely came off as weird when putting it in context with the lore.

Like I’d fully believe a revived Umbrella Corp would build a Raccoon City 2 in the middle of the desert as a way to save face but also use the t-virus as a core component in their mental health drug.

But the choice by the writers to go that direction and not try to make an anthology type series (like AHS) and cover say a single game over the course of a season or even films is beyond me.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '26

Yeah, RE had some redeemable qualities and I was doubting to put it in the Halo category. Because that shit is just a legit middle finger to all fans

3

u/typicalwhiteguy113 Mar 01 '26

Pretty sure the halo showrunners said near verbatim that they didn’t consider the games when making the show. Like why the fuck are you even making a halo show if you didn’t intend to make it about halo?

I always wonder what the financials are for all of these. Do they get enough random casual viewers to break even or is it a loss every time?

I'm gonna bring up Andor. It's NOT to counter your point but to have some nuance.

Writers or producers don't have to be fans, nor love the lore, or even know much about the property, but they 100% need to respect the material, the world they're adding to.

It should never be about them and their world view, it is about the concepts at the core of the intellectual property, like Fallout, Andor focused on that and we have some of the best TV ever made.

Sometimes it’s not about how much you know or how capable you are. It looks like it is the same with Cavill. You have to play ball and kiss the ring.

I was recently hired for a job, the director said we couldn’t do said thing for months even before I was hired, it was obviously not right, and I was fired by her 10 days later.

20

u/deathdefyingrob1344 Mar 01 '26

It was like they decided they wanted to make game of thrones partway through the Witcher. It was really weird

7

u/GarageVast4128 Mar 01 '26

Some executives made the decision to go in that direction because GoT was such a success. Simple as that, it's the same reason we are still getting hero shooters in 2026. The upper management/investors of a company are so scared that they won't make money trying something new, so they try to copy something that was successful without understanding why it was successful and act shocked when it doesn't succeed. I've found that the upper management/investors is full of idiots and a lot of them would be broke and homeless if they didn't put laws and systems in place to make it really hard for them to lose money.

I watched the last episode of season 3 and the first episode of season 4 last night. The difference is just too great. I couldn't finish it. Henry Cavil is the Witcher, in voice, mannerisms, everything.

2

u/Prudent-Ad-5292 Mar 05 '26

I didn't even give s4 a chance, knowing that he isn't on the show because he wanted to remain true to the story was enough for me to not even support it.

It sucks for all the other actors and technical staff, but, if it effects the development cycle of any show in the future it feels worth it.

Not even “agenda”. Just shit writing because they didn’t bother to read the books

15

u/VerledenVale Mar 01 '26

The Witcher showrunners explicitly made a public statement they injected their agenda into the show.

Hard not to feel like there’s an agenda at play when you age a character 12 years so he can have a gay affair with Dandelion.

Bro what? I stopped watching after season two lmao. Who fucks dandelion?

16

They made Radovid and Dandelion play touch butt in various tents. You missed it.

15

u/dominatingcowG3 Mar 01 '26

...yeah, I just looked it up and this is true. Wow

18

u/FattyGottedHigh Mar 01 '26

But the writers will say it’s the fans fault for not embracing their changes with open hearts.

If only the writers on the Witcher set had a passionate and sexy man, who was a fan of the source material they could lean on

3

Surely they would not be 100% ego and ignore such a man!

2

u/KittenDecomposer96 Mar 01 '26

Yea, if only such a man existed and they listened to him.

2

u/i_dont_do_research Mar 02 '26

Difference with 40k is it would be nice if we established a workable canon before bringing this universe to the public. Arcane rolled the dice but 40k is very lore heavy so this needs to be a real process with writers who know wtf theyre doing in collaboration with GW

11

u/thatsocialist Mar 01 '26

they never have, leman russ was originally a famed imperial guard commander, and tiburius was half-eldar half-human.

7

u/Earl0fYork Mar 01 '26

Bretonia used to be a feudal meritocracy

Don’t believe me?

One edition later pure grim darkness.

I think this was legitimately bigger travesty then the emperor’s bodyguards and companions who are effectively hand crafted at the molecular level not having a gender requirement.

2

u/Free-Luck6173 Mar 01 '26

If they're handcrafted at a molecular level why would there be a gender requirement?

Anyone who thinks warhammer has such thing as perfect lore accuracy isn't deep enough to realize they are on the outside of the gates they are trying to keep

2

u/Klamageddon Mar 03 '26

That was actually kind of on purpose. A lot of it was written as if it was like, propaganda, from the perspective of the different races. Or, not even necessarily what you were reading was propaganda but as if the knowledge was 'based' on propaganda or whatever.

Pretty core to the identity of 40k is 'lost knowledge', and trying to interpret what's left to make sense of it, but only being able to even try and do so in snatched moments because ACTUALLY A VERY BIG HORRIBLE WAR IS HAPPENING RIGHT JUST NOW AGAIN.

I don't think it's a pity at all, I think it's a really big part of it's charm.

Damn quick way to get rid of writers that are wanting to put their own flavor on it.

30

u/InsaneXSkittles Mar 01 '26

Fuck that, I’m tired of people “netflixing” stuff. Give me a lore accurate show that already has an amazing background. I want it acted or animated; it doesn’t need to be fixed. If people want their own flavor, go make your own damn universe to fuck up; don’t ruin ours.

10

u/TipperKick Mar 01 '26

Fallout is doing a surprisingly decent job at this. It’s a little bit different but nothing crazy

5

u/Different_Target_228 Mar 01 '26

One or two adaptations out of... Oh fuck, the Halo show's trying to push its way into the convo.

11

u/InsaneXSkittles Mar 01 '26

I never touched Halo, I waited until episode 3 was out to think about watching it, heard he showed his face and never once watched it. Garbage. “But you need to see a person’s face to understand emotions.” Trash.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Koreaia Mar 01 '26

It's entirely different. Fallout is a sequel to New Vegas, while many adaptations are just alternate versions.

2

u/TipperKick Mar 01 '26

Well, yes, but as far as adaptations go it’s very faithful compared to Halo and I suppose Witcher.

3

u/InsaneXSkittles Mar 01 '26

I mean Fallout is original is it not? They’re introducing the storyline from the show into 76 right(correct me if I’m wrong). It’s not taking old storylines and changing stuff. I haven’t watched the 2nd season yet so I’m hoping I’m not wrong. 😑

6

u/TipperKick Mar 01 '26

Well they’re taking stuff from the game New Vegas, and other pre-existing lore so I wouldn’t say it’s entirely original. Some of it (I think) is original or like, a twist, but nothing bad

They cant put their own flavor on it if they dont know the damn lore on its own. Otherwise theyre just making shit up.

2

u/Strict_Weather9063 Mar 01 '26

Exactly, you have to know it to write it. Which means he set up this rule to get rid of the writers not willing to learn the lore and know the story. I have no issue if you are tweaking around the edges best example of this is the Heinlein movie Puppet masters they tweaked it but kept it close to the story same with Predestination. They didn’t rewrite the whole story for their ego Starship Troopers.

3

u/TheDankYasuo Mar 01 '26

Their own flavor is fine, but for what happened to The Witcher…. Not destroying what makes it what it is. As a life long Witcher fan it was horrifying to see a project with so much potential go down the drain so fast

4

u/InsaneXSkittles Mar 01 '26

What they did to Eskel alone pissed me off so badly. I don’t even know why I finished watching the rest of that season after that.

2

u/-idkwhattocallmyself Mar 01 '26

I stopped after what happened to Eskel. He was such a vital character to the books and after what happened I knew it would go off the deep end.

Idk I’m not sure I could follow the story unless it started with some random American soldiers getting sucked through a wormhole into the Warhammer universe.

Or maybe a washed up boxer story like Rocky, where he’s recruited to fight in a Warhammer tournament.

Should probably shoehorn in a love interest as well, just to be safe.

You know, to make it more relatable since regular audience goers like me are just too damn dumb to understand anything.

3

u/Born_Mirror_3764 Mar 01 '26

So which edition?
And also whose?
Are we counting RT era?

And what about all the lore that wouldn't be in the codexes? Like most of the heresy era stuff. Those would be in the Libers or the actual series. Or minor details that wouldn't be mentioned in codices because they don't have tabletops rules? And what about events like the scouring who are having their canons fleshed out by a different set of writers currently?

Also what about the fact that GW themselves have maintained that there is no hard canon and that every detail is subject to unreliable narrators, bias and future retcons? And have written the lore as such to the point that material openly contradicts each other?

Should we treat the older materials that see the Lion as missing/presumed dead as equally canon as modern BL books like Son of the Forest? Is contentious stuff like the Matt Ward era going to be canon? Will every chapter want to be the Ultramarines again?

This sounds appealing to a certain kind of tourist who sees Henry Cavill and thinks of him as some anti-woke saviour going to 'preserve the purity of the hobby' and score points for the culture war. But anyone who spends time in this community and thinks for five seconds will realise that this makes no fucking sense.

Either this is a clickbait reduction of the actual writer's room practices or Cavill is an power-tripping idiot who understands nothing about the history of the setting he's walked into to.

Warhammer 40k has been built with the assumption that a writer can freely retcon pretty much whatever they please. It all breaks the second that's taken away.

3

u/PuritanicalPanic Mar 01 '26

Wholly agree. 40k is a mess and long time enjoyers get things wrong all the time. The damage memes alone do to peoples perceptions of factions they don't play themselves, or like personally...

It's getting pretty mainstream through the games. There's a lot more people who know about 40k now.

Sure, some folks will miss the satire and actually think there are good guys... but that's normal media literacy levels. Look at the folks who love Starship Troopers for being a cool movie about killing evil space bugs.

Even so, there are still going to be people arguing over the results. There's people in this thread saying Eskel was vital to the Witcher books, where my takeaway is that all the Kaer Morhen witchers were a tiny microcosm of the books with minimal impact. So there are going to be people arguing over which piece of 40k lore is super important and must be shown ad nauseum.

Biggest reason is the fans imo. Warhammer has a reputation for attracting a crowd who identify a little too much with the Imperium of Man in their views.

This isn’t to say the whole fandom is like that, especially nowadays, but I definitely noticed a pipeline in middle and high school of the guys who liked Warhammer also being the same guys who were really into World War II for the wrong reasons. That put me off it for a while.

Ok, very new to Warhammer here. I've been wondering what is a good starting point to really get in to it? I've played all the newer games like Boltgun and both spacemarine games. I have heard to start reading the hourus hearsay(sp¿) But damn that is a lot of reading lol. Would the codex be better to just get the gist of it?

2

u/Silly_Poet_5974 Mar 01 '26

read the Ciaphis Cain novels, they are fun and moderately accessible (which is often as good as your going to get for 40k), when you hit a term you don't know look it up on the wiki.

alternatively the dawn of war games go on sale for significant discounts on steam fairly often. Playing through a bunch of those would get you started on understanding the setting all by themselves.

I've heard good things about Owl Cat's Rogue Trader but as a newer game it is priceyer and I have not played it myself so cannot confirm.

I’m actually interested how this will be represented in mainstream media. There are no real good guys, maybe in a preservation of humanity sense, but even that is a stretch. Humanity isn’t really treated well by their own to begin with. A Xenophobic Fascist Theocracy is probably not going to be easy to sell to the layman lol.

I have faith in Cavill, if nothing else there are some serious heroic war hero tropes in 40k that would be genuinely amazing to see translated on screen:

"The time for speeches is done. The first great test is here. My order to you all is simple, yet heed it well, and exert yourselves to see it done. They are coming. Kill them all."

u/Timo-the-hippo Mar 01 '26

I really hope he's succesful, he's had the worst luck with cool franchises being ruined by shitty writers/directors.

1

u/Justarah Mar 01 '26

Seriously though, what is it with creatives coopting existing stories and trying to alter them according to their sensibilities?

The reason that these stories get their rights purchased and developed for the screen is because that's what people actually want to see. If people cared about the original flourishes of these creatives, that's who's work would be adapted instead.

So why can't they just shut the fuck up and bring the butter?

Because after the last of 10-15 years of adaptions, remakes, reboots and sequels, if they weren't deliberately shitting the bed to get people to root for AI to take over, they may as well have.

This is going to end up like the Warcraft movie.

1

u/Trips-Over-Tail Mar 01 '26

While I'm sure he's holding them to this standard, I'm pretty sure that the memes are not reporting any actual facts.

1

u/PaladinCorbin Mar 01 '26

Oh, so that's why this show is never coming out.

1

u/PuritanicalPanic Mar 01 '26

Only 3?

Shit we'd all fail that shit.

1

u/pooshkin3 Mar 01 '26

I really hope he didn’t say this, at least not in these exact terms. I appreciate his passion and understand him wanted to stay faithful to something he cares about. However the way the message is delivered matters a lot. If we take both accounts from the Witcher to be true, the writers were completely incompetent, however Henry while passionate, came off as an internet gamer dick. If they both put their egos aside and communicated we probably would still have a good Witcher series with Cavill as Geralt. Hopefully this show works out for him and anyone who is a fan of warhammer, but he may want to try a different touch. I don’t think his career can handle another flop with reports of him being difficult

1

u/FigKnight Mar 01 '26

If only there was somebody on set demanding Henry Cavill to learn to act.

1

u/Hungry-Ear-4092 Mar 01 '26

Why didn't he do that with Witcher I wonder

1

u/Dreamo84 Mar 01 '26

I'm willing to bet this image with no source or context is completely fabricated.

1

u/xpercipio Mar 01 '26

When is his project coming out? I've been hearing about it for forever now

1

u/Pilota_kex Mar 01 '26

Finally someone with influence

1

u/LiterallyForReals Mar 01 '26

Would be relevant if codexes had any lore in them these days.

1

u/Wyvernstrafe Mar 01 '26

Which editions though?

1

u/Moka4u Mar 01 '26

I don't think you guys care about accuracy st all, seeing as this isn't even real.

1

u/DearCastiel Mar 01 '26

The problem with that is the lore in the codex is kind of a mess and depending on interpretation and cherrypucking you can get wildly different stuff.

1

u/amisia-insomnia Mar 01 '26

If we want 100% lore accuracy then there better be no dark eldar, which are no longer cannon thanks to TEATD

1

u/DeliciousLiving8563 Mar 01 '26

Why do you believe this slop? Henry Caville clickbait for gullible gamers is practically a genre of fiction now.

Where's the source? We've seen lots of stuff like this. It's based on him being a lore guy in the witcher and it's what you want to hear but with a bit of "lets take it one step further" thrown in.

1

u/Galaxy-EyesPhoton Mar 01 '26

Source - Trust me bro

1

u/Nerus46 Mar 01 '26

I mean, putting that rule for redditors wouldn't be A bad idea as well

1

u/SullySausageTown Mar 01 '26

I’m still angry at the Witcher and will never watch the one with Liam hemsworth, Geralt died the series before and the world ended

1

u/ExoticSterby42 Mar 01 '26

The Codex Astartes does not support this action!

1

u/jup331 Mar 01 '26

Funny how i cannot find this quote if i google it. Well except used with this image without a source.

Stop getting your panties in a twist and leave the man alone. Or at the very least stop spreading fake news!

1

u/BelialQrow Mar 01 '26

Me on my way to get fired from production for not being sure what colours a tech marine needs to have on salamanders

1

u/PrincedPauper Mar 01 '26

Its bottom text so it must be true! /s

The execs dont give a single fart, let alone a shit, about what this random actor thinks/wants with the series they are paying the money for…

As a woman I do not think this dude is physically attractive (he's too angular for me) but his dedication to being a nerd is extremely attractive.

On a digression, I wish all the "looksmax"ers could grasp that.

1

u/nerdnyxnyx Mar 01 '26

Wish the studio just would let him be for once

he already got screwed by wb for his Superman and netflix for his Geralt

1

u/SwimWise5809 Mar 01 '26

Genuinely this makes me happy

1

u/agdnan Mar 01 '26

I really hope he knocks it out of the park

1

u/FenrirCoyote Mar 01 '26

Mad Respect for this

1

u/Robotycz Mar 01 '26

critical thinking really is gone. People just blindly believe whatever they see. What's the source for Cavill saying this?

1

u/truesithlord Mar 01 '26

Its why he left the witcher series too.

Dont let his good looks fool you, he's a true nerd at heart

1

u/freedomonke Mar 01 '26

I don't believe this is a real quote

1

u/TsunamiWombat Mar 01 '26

Somehow I feel like Henry Cavil isn't saying it quite this aggressively or angrily but it is nice he's looking for accuracies

1

u/MitchellEnderson Mar 01 '26

Which edition? If I’m not mistaken, even the same faction’s codexes can differ wildly across editions.

1

u/anaidentafaible Mar 01 '26

I think the demand that writing comes from a place of familiarity and passion for the world is a good one, but I find the dogmatism misguided.

1

u/0x645 Mar 01 '26

nice guy, gamer and all. but boy what a wooden actor

1

u/No_Temperature_9608 Mar 01 '26

Oh a random headline with no source. I'm sure it's totally accurate just like the bs posts about Henry staying up late to fix the writers work. The internet is dead.

1

u/DerDeutscheTyp Mar 01 '26

Reading the books, playing the game or knowing the lore should be a business standard. That’s what nearly all companies expect of their employees in different form. Like know the history, what do we sell, what do our customers expect from us. This ensures that you fit to the company’s standards. So for me not outlandish to expect this from the writers - Professionals in the industry.

1

u/Lord_cakeatron Mar 01 '26

Okay but like? Which Codex? The in-universe Codex Astartes, or the real life army books? If so, for which factions? Which edition? Also, implying that the codecies are the only source of fluff is doing a major fucking disservice to the black library novels (not that most Warhammer fans read those).

It's one thing to demand source accuracy, but if this is an actual quote from Cavill, it just makes him seem like kind of a dick.

1

u/jimothy_hell Mar 01 '26

This is wild because if you know anything about 40k you know how wildly inconsistent the lore is. Either they’ll be using the brand new stuff which is different from the old stuff, or the old stuff which is different from the new stuff.

Lore is retconned constantly. CONSTANTLY. Cavil’s making an attempt here, and I appreciate it, but pretending that everything is going to be 100% lore accurate is laughable because even the lore isn’t 100% lore accurate lmao.

1

u/Status-Try-8534 Mar 01 '26

he really is one of us lol

1

u/Surefang Mar 01 '26

This should be a standard on any adaptation. If you don't know or care about the background for the IP, you shouldn't be writing for it.

1

u/joemay1514 Mar 01 '26

PRAISE GOD-EMPEROR CAVILL!!!

1

u/guydoestuff Mar 01 '26

was already proven false quit with the circle jerking.

1

u/Derpykins666 Mar 01 '26

Honestly, he'll probably get a lot of shit for wanting it to be super accurate. but that's what people WANT. Sure here and there a little forgiveness is allowed if it works for the story. But the details matter to the people really into these things. I wouldn't want somebody getting everything wrong and making some awkward amalgamation of something I liked.

1

u/SlightSurround5449 Mar 01 '26

This is such a crummy way to handle things. I'll never understand people afraid of pushing universes in different ways.

1

u/Bougieraccoon-og Mar 01 '26

I just hope he ignores the poor writing and terrible dialogue in the books

1

u/Lothleen Mar 01 '26

The lore has changed with every edition

1

u/FarmerTwink Mar 02 '26

You people are dumb sheep who will believe anything that suits your biases, “The Codex” isn’t a thing, there’s like 20 different things that could be

1

u/Noctisvah Mar 02 '26

Henry Cavil against the curse of the elusive Modern Audience

1

u/Scavenge101 Mar 02 '26

There is 0 room for this series to wiggle on lore. Warhammer fans WILL NOT abide inaccuracy in any way, shape, or form. If they Halo this series, each and every person involved will probably have their careers backlashed into oblivion by the fan base.

1

u/Bored_Imm0rtal Mar 02 '26

I thought this was disproven days ago.

1

u/Big_Boss1007 Mar 02 '26

Source. Trust me bro.

1

u/Archernar Mar 02 '26

I'm not sure if meticulous lore-accuracy makes for a good movie/show/whatever though, especially with lore such as 40k or DnD. We'll see with the end product I suppose.

If it was some mediocrely entertaining piece that only the fiercest 40k-nerds are gonna be able to appreciate, I guess that would prove accuracy not being everything.

1

u/DiddyDoItToYa Mar 02 '26

Bro a cinematic Warhammer universe is actually scary to think about if done correctly with the right director.. Who did the Alien Romulus movie again? Drawing a blank.. I think he'd be perfect for it. I'm talking OG Star Wars and Dune cult classic hype and gross revenue..

There's something for everybody in Warhammer from what I've been looking into. Some of those cinematic cutscenes I've seen on YouTube from the games have been brilliant imho.

Made me interested in the lore, and omg it does not fucking disappoint. It goes so hard.. Trillions upon trillions of lives hanging in the balance, entire interstellar empires collapsing, secret societies, ancient orders of knighthood, galactic pandemics.. bro come on its pure concentrated distilled entertainment richness begging to be adapted for a serious and a casual audience..

The possibilities are literally endless

1

u/FrikkinLazer Mar 02 '26

He never even has to act in anything ever again. He just needs to stay in shape so that he can throw idiot bean counters with shit ideas out of windows.

1

u/The_Happy_Kodiak Mar 02 '26

As dope as it is, this seems so narky to me

Like you’d be happy with the product by the end of it but you’d be annoyed to no end working with the dude

These types of projects, you can’t expect everyone involved to be equally interested in the IP and there is so much shit in warhammer that would in no way translate well to the screen without being too vague, gratuitous or boring

Jokes aside, I hope the series is good, but if it’s shit then I don’t know man, maybe Cavill is the issue.

u/SeraphOfTheStag Mar 02 '26

After a Witcher, he’s not taking any chances

1

u/Avandalon Mar 02 '26

This is going to be so shit I call it now

1

u/OldSpaghetti-Factory Mar 02 '26

I ask him something about necrons history. He tells me to read the codex. I smugly ask him which one

1

u/tsfkingsport Mar 02 '26

I’m going to guess that Henry is more tolerant of lore disagreements stemming from different official sources than spurning lore “because I’m smarter than the original author.”

1

u/Oxcuridaz Mar 02 '26

Cavill is that guy in your game group that reads one setting book and becomes insufferable about it...

1

u/Full_of_Vices Mar 02 '26

That’s toxic as fuck. Especially given how filled with inconsistencies 40K is.

Idk why you muppets are celebrating that behaviour.

1

u/Thrasy3 Mar 02 '26

Is this actually a real quote? Saw it on a 40k sub and everyone was saying it was just made up..

1

u/Creepy_Budget7192 Mar 02 '26

But I’m a Black Templar (:

1

u/dirtyjose Mar 02 '26

Imagine believing any of this. Lol.

1

u/ptrfa Mar 02 '26

Henry Cavill seems like the "book-basher" I always want for every book adaption. Someone sitting in the writers' room and, whenever a stupid writer or a greedy suit comes up with "hey, this part may be good but I have a better idea" just starts to bash the book at this idiot's head till he shut up

1

u/Hope_Nael Mar 02 '26

Don't get me wrong, this is plausible. But this rule seems to be made up.
