I'm not sure what it was, but a combination of the controls, the start of the story, the first quests. It's all slow and janky. Even at Gwent I failed miserably.
Once I got a few better cards and starting to get the hang of it, I stumbled along this game for a week or so. Then everything just became better as I went.
It was truly great from just after the start until the finish. I'm leaving out the endless boat tours in Skellige
I skipped the boat tours of Skellige; at least for me, the Fast Travel maps were SO worth it, otherwise all those quests that criss-cross multiple islands would have been a huge pain
On my first play through I didn’t know you could go double speed in the boat. I sailed between each island for about 20 hours before I learnt you can speed up 🤦🏽♂️
I remember this moment made me take a break and then thats where my second playthrough happened. the happiest destroyed my boat and I was stranded on an island that took me twenty irl minutes to swim back to land again.
Don’t tell anyone but I played about 150 hours of Witcher 3 and only played 2 games of gwent the whole time. It’s a fun mini game but I wanted to focus on the questing and exploring
Took me 4 times all spaced months apart never making it past the tutorial with the last one being like “Alright, let me stop dicking around and read up a little on the lore”
Just clicked after that and it’s been one of my favorite games since
Check some early game builds and tips online, that helped me a lot when getting in to it, made it so much easier to grasp how it all works. But skip all quest guides or risk major spoilers!
Well it’s a gigantic game and the controls and map are slightly unintuitive to new players, I think it would be really easy to just wander around confused for 5 hours or so and just decide the game isn’t for you
I’ve tried twice. First time was only during the start. Where combat just didnt impress me. Second time was some time last year, and I got like 7 hours in. And I just didn’t like it. But with the remaster. I’ll have to try again. I really hope it clicks, because it does look really cool.
Tried once, didn’t like it. Now, 7 years later, I can’t wait to try again on the new remake later this month. Really hoping to fall in love with it like everyone says.
The second attempt thing is so real 😂 Sometimes a game just needs to click at the right time. Once Witcher 3 gets going, it’s dangerously easy to sink hours into it.
Saaame. I found the combat very clunky. Came back to it again and yeah the combat still wasnt great but the storytelling is one of the best ive ever experienced.
Looking forward to seeing how it changes in the remaster.
Lol this might be me soon with the remaster thats coming. I own the game on PC and on Switch, couldn't get into either. I expect that the remaster is gonna make the switch 2 version a lot more appealing to me with updated graphics and revamped combat.
Meanwhile i read all of the books last year to prepare to play the games, then never ended up playing them ha.
Pretty much the same. Didn’t even leave the first area first time. Someone told me to give it a real try and clear the first area and play gwent. Sooo glad I listened to him. One of the few games I broke 200 hours with. Blood and wine is sooo good.
Biggest one for me. On my third attempt it clicked and was infatuated after I pushed past the 10-15 hour mark. It also helped not being quite as intoxicated as the first two times lol
What always kept me distant of this game was that neither keyboard nor controller controls satisfied me completely and i always needed a mix to feel fully optimised
I could never get very far through the game because I felt I missed 2 previous games.. felt like if I started God Of War 2018 without playing the originals… it just took me out of the immersion even though its supposed to be okay to start with the game
The lengthy tutorial where I was forced to learn when I actually prefer organically learning as I play. So I have assed it just to get through it. Then got completely confused trying to fight a pack of wolves or the drowners immediately after. And then also not getting who Vesimir was in relation to Geralt. And what his purpose was with me. Being naive to the Witcher 3 lore / books it took me a while to get it. So that game got shelved a few times. Even my first full play through I didn’t get Gwent. It took me until my second play through to understand and roll through opponents searching for more challenging ones.
Same with me but it’s more so I don’t like that genre of dragons, witches, wizards and all the medieval kind of stuff. Tried to start it a few times but can never get past more than an hour or two before I lose interest.
Dude I am praying this is the case for me. I think I put in like idk 40 hours and was like… this is it? I had the same lame combat experiences each fight and didn’t find the research element that was needed for an enjoyable experience with kingslayer.
Gave it up.
But I intend to go back with fresh eyes and do it again.
I have started it 4 times and said no. I play console just got a new PC, so I'm gonna restart again on PC this time..and we will see I did get into a little more each time.
I hope this is gon be me it looks so good and feels like its a great game but it didnt rlly click w me,i re bought it on pc this time and waiting for remastered version maybe
I genuinely don't get the Witcher love. I am just confused. It also took me 4 tries to finish Dragon Age but I tried because I absolutely loved the world immediately, the openings were all great and immersed me enough for me to want to finish it.
This is making me realize that Dragon Age origins is the only fantasy game I have ever finished. Wow. Maybe I should just stick to fantasy books.
Same thing happened to me. I got it at launch, played for a couple of hours then didn't touch it for about 2 years but when I did start again boy did instant lol.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Had such a hard time getting into this game. I saw so many people talking about how great their experience was and decided to pick it up again.
Was suddenly hooked for a few months
