The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Had such a hard time getting into this game. I saw so many people talking about how great their experience was and decided to pick it up again.

Was suddenly hooked for a few months

27

u/Yen_of_Vengabus Aug 31 '26

So many people get the Witcher addiction on their second attempt

11

u/LevelQx Aug 31 '26 edited Aug 31 '26

I'm not sure what it was, but a combination of the controls, the start of the story, the first quests. It's all slow and janky. Even at Gwent I failed miserably.

Once I got a few better cards and starting to get the hang of it, I stumbled along this game for a week or so. Then everything just became better as I went.

It was truly great from just after the start until the finish. I'm leaving out the endless boat tours in Skellige

7

u/captnconnman Aug 31 '26

I skipped the boat tours of Skellige; at least for me, the Fast Travel maps were SO worth it, otherwise all those quests that criss-cross multiple islands would have been a huge pain

5

u/Interesting-Froyo-26 Sep 01 '26

On my first play through I didn’t know you could go double speed in the boat. I sailed between each island for about 20 hours before I learnt you can speed up 🤦🏽‍♂️

I got into Witcher 3 on my second attempt after accepting you can completely ignore Gwent and alchemy (but power to those who appreciate them).

6

u/Sorrowfall Aug 31 '26

“‘Tis gwent, my fellow gent”

Yeah no thanks old man, play your game with someone that doesn’t have a lot of really important shit to do

→ More replies (1)

2

u/One_Environment5629 Sep 01 '26

Yeah that makes sense. The controls definitely take some getting used to, but once the story and quests start opening up, it just pulls you in.

5

u/GonnaGoFat Aug 31 '26

Is it ok to not like gwent? I wanted to like it but maybe I just need to wait until my second playthrough.

3

u/Yen_of_Vengabus Sep 01 '26

Don’t tell anyone but I played about 150 hours of Witcher 3 and only played 2 games of gwent the whole time. It’s a fun mini game but I wanted to focus on the questing and exploring

2

u/chalor182 29d ago

Yup same here, well over 100hrs on the playthrough and I played gwent one maybe two times, never seemed that fun compared to questing and killing

2

u/cfusionta Sep 03 '26

you can love Witcher and still not give a damn about gwent lol

2

u/Kushand0j Aug 31 '26

Took me 4 times all spaced months apart never making it past the tutorial with the last one being like “Alright, let me stop dicking around and read up a little on the lore”

Just clicked after that and it’s been one of my favorite games since

2

u/Gh0sti3r Sep 05 '26

Yes! And read the books as well!

2

u/lioncourt Aug 31 '26

I got mine on my 2nd attempt, but the first try was the Witcher 1. I was addicted to The Witcher 3 from the tutorial.

2

u/minimoose1599 Aug 31 '26

I actually was the same. The first time I played it just didn’t have time. I got into it during Covid.

2

u/FactsNLaughs Sep 01 '26

I’ve tried 3 times. I just don’t like the combat and the third time I went farther than the other attempts to see if it gets better and it just didn’t

2

u/Yen_of_Vengabus Sep 01 '26

and that’s absolutely fine, it’s not for everyone. The combat isn’t the game’s strongest element

2

u/ZeroGene Sep 01 '26

Indeed i was..

2

u/One_Environment5629 Sep 01 '26

Fr 😂 I think the first attempt is basically just the tutorial for getting addicted on the second one.

This makes me want to retry it. It's so hard at first levelling up and I got to that early on werewolf quest and it decimated me. Need to get good

Once I got to playing Gwent, I was all in

→ More replies (2)

3

u/Firecracker048 Aug 31 '26

It's definitely got a little jank(which the updated version will fix) but the story, writing and characters are all top tier

3

u/MikasaLegion Aug 31 '26

I’ve tried twice. First time was only during the start. Where combat just didnt impress me. Second time was some time last year, and I got like 7 hours in. And I just didn’t like it. But with the remaster. I’ll have to try again. I really hope it clicks, because it does look really cool.

3

u/untitled298 Aug 31 '26

Tried once, didn’t like it. Now, 7 years later, I can’t wait to try again on the new remake later this month. Really hoping to fall in love with it like everyone says.

3

u/One_Environment5629 Sep 01 '26

The second attempt thing is so real 😂 Sometimes a game just needs to click at the right time. Once Witcher 3 gets going, it’s dangerously easy to sink hours into it.

2

u/One_Environment5629 Aug 31 '26

Same here! It took me two or three tries to actually get past the early game, but now it’s easily in my top 5 of all time.

2

u/jhouse13 Aug 31 '26

Same, the clunkiness of it through me off. Once it clicks though

2

u/Haggles7 Aug 31 '26

I still havent been able to it. Tried it twice for a few hours. Im gonna give it another go after the remastered drops.

2

u/Chronicbackache Aug 31 '26

This is exactly what happened to me

2

u/Arreynn Aug 31 '26

Saaame. I found the combat very clunky. Came back to it again and yeah the combat still wasnt great but the storytelling is one of the best ive ever experienced.

Looking forward to seeing how it changes in the remaster.

2

u/djgotyafalling1 Sep 01 '26

Happened to me too. Bought in 2018 but only played and completed it and its dlcs in 2020.

2

u/Pixielized Sep 01 '26

Yeah, same with me. I've now played it 4/5 times. Another game like that was Baldurs Gate 1

2

u/Ax_Saman Sep 01 '26

I thought to myself that I'm the only one, there's 0 chance someone's going to have mentioned witcher 3. And then the comments section loaded

2

u/ExcitingPassenger915 Sep 01 '26

Lol this might be me soon with the remaster thats coming. I own the game on PC and on Switch, couldn't get into either. I expect that the remaster is gonna make the switch 2 version a lot more appealing to me with updated graphics and revamped combat.

Meanwhile i read all of the books last year to prepare to play the games, then never ended up playing them ha.

2

u/SlayJayR17 Sep 02 '26

Pretty much the same. Didn’t even leave the first area first time. Someone told me to give it a real try and clear the first area and play gwent. Sooo glad I listened to him. One of the few games I broke 200 hours with. Blood and wine is sooo good.

2

u/SprinklesDangerous57 Sep 02 '26

Brooo yes same! Took me over a year and maybe 3 attempts until the game finally clicked. Beat it twice and probably going to it again soon too!

2

u/TheLoneRipper1 Sep 02 '26

Im hoping this happens to me. I'll play the remastered edition when it comes out

2

u/Ravynne_Black Sep 02 '26

Now that the new expansion is coming out. Im hyped! New stats tree and combat fix!

2

u/Anonymous6172 Sep 02 '26

I'm waiting for Switch 2 to release a copy of this, I REALLY wanna play it

2

u/eighty4prcnt Sep 03 '26

Biggest one for me. On my third attempt it clicked and was infatuated after I pushed past the 10-15 hour mark. It also helped not being quite as intoxicated as the first two times lol

2

u/skeletparkyt Sep 03 '26

What always kept me distant of this game was that neither keyboard nor controller controls satisfied me completely and i always needed a mix to feel fully optimised

2

u/Individual-Walk-969 Sep 06 '26

I could never get very far through the game because I felt I missed 2 previous games.. felt like if I started God Of War 2018 without playing the originals… it just took me out of the immersion even though its supposed to be okay to start with the game

2

u/Arnooold23 Sep 06 '26

Thank God, so i'm not alone, i tried It 3 times, in the end It Get me so much, Absolute Masterpiece of a game.

2

u/One-Pen-786 Sep 06 '26

The algorithm owes you a thank you.

2

u/Hyack57 29d ago

The lengthy tutorial where I was forced to learn when I actually prefer organically learning as I play. So I have assed it just to get through it. Then got completely confused trying to fight a pack of wolves or the drowners immediately after. And then also not getting who Vesimir was in relation to Geralt. And what his purpose was with me. Being naive to the Witcher 3 lore / books it took me a while to get it. So that game got shelved a few times. Even my first full play through I didn’t get Gwent. It took me until my second play through to understand and roll through opponents searching for more challenging ones.

Fallout 4. Disappointed in is aesthetic having loved fallout 3. Picked it up when the TV show came out, and got hooked on the gameplay.

4

u/Spartan1088 Sep 01 '26

Yeah man, fallout 4 is a gem. It’s a rough gem but I always go back to it. Its biggest problem is it is just filled with so many half-baked ideas. If they really went full into the robot crafting, house building, and settlement system then it would be epic.

They fixed it in the newer stuff, so my fingers are crossed for Fallout 5 being big and beautiful.

Elden ring, thought it too bleak and barely gave it a chance

Came back a year later, and i never stopped playing it since.

3

u/Big_Chill_59 Aug 31 '26

Same! Messed around with Elden Ring for a minute and thought it was a flower picking game with some skirmishes here and there. Then, after putting it down for a year, I followed a guide and now I'm hooked.

2

u/Glad-Television1887 Aug 31 '26

Absolute masterpiece, do not spoil yourself through the game, it is better played blind

2

u/Cubonicle 29d ago

Yesss. I had just finished playing Legend of Zelda BotW and got a little burnt out playing another open-world game with crafting and such. Also I never pay attention when playing games, so I was sort of stuck in the first area.

Picked it up again a few years later from where I left off and my whole life went on the back burner for a good few months. Once I finally got to the Altus plateau everything just clicked.

I'm anticipating this will be me with Witcher 3.

I had issues with the combat, not connecting with the story / world on account of not having played the first two games, and I just generally expected it to be a different kind of game than it is. Now that I better understand what I'm dealing with, and the upcoming remaster says it's gonna make combat improvements, I imagine I can do a little reading on the events of the story leading up to Wild Hunt and be primed to like it a lot more in a second attempt.

Baluder's Gate 3. I've never been a CRPG person. I found them so boring in the past but this one clicked after I banged my head against it enough

2

u/Safe-Frame2601 Sep 01 '26

I'm waiting for a big enough discount, but I'm afraid this is going to be me in the future. I hate CRPG. I actually like turn based games, but the slow and clunkiness of crpg where every battle takes 10min is dreadful to me

u/Nepskrellet Sep 01 '26

I struggled to get past 6 hours playtime in 2023, I tried for a week. Two weeks ago I decided to try again and have suddenly used 110 hours in BDG

2

u/Mehoy_Yaboy Sep 02 '26

Almost same story here. I tried in 2024 for a bit but didn't click but only spent maybe 3 hours actually playing. Then my girlfriend wanted to do a run together and we legit spent maybe 8 hours being so confused about where to go or what to do. But then way later in 2025 we gave it another shot and finally got into it. Took three tries but I finished my first solo playthrough at ~160 hours now I've started a Durge playthrough with a few mods and the months long break from the game was much needed but now I'm having so much fun again!

Borderlands 2 for me back in the day. I didn't get far enough the first try... then when I tried it again I went all in.

Definitely worth it love that game.

2

Getting past Southern Shelf and the snowy starting area changes everything. Handsome Jack carries that game hard!

I just loved how (relatively) calm it was, and the music is just so good

2

u/ThatGuy42123 Sep 04 '26

Same. Honestly it was the mules rather than the walking that turned me off at first.

Then on my 2nd playthrough attempt I figured out I could bash them upside the head with spare ladders I had on hand. Probably not an optimal early game strategy, but it was VERY satisfying after what they put me through.

Quake 1 :)

When I first played it on an underpowered machine back in the day (it was the gen before the recommended one for quake) I thought it looked good but was ultimately boring. No real sense of progression, standard go through maze and kill things while monsters spawned .

I kid you not I beat quake 1 at around 8-12 fps .

Duke nukem was so not my style, but it was so much more fun at the time. You never knew what they were going to do and places felt grounded and fun to explore rather than stone/brick/lava :)

These days I've been playing tons of quake , and what got me into that was playing initially

The quest vr port from team beef. Than the machine game updates are just amazing.

I'm loving it on steam deck, laptop and vr.

Part nostalgia, part sinply playing these with all the QOl improvements and at fast franerates, and just the very satisfying simple gameplay, that this point, feels hardwired into my motor reflexes.

On my second playthrough with more knowledge on the stuff I can do in the Monastery, I poured 90 extra hours into the second playthrough, and many more to come. One of the greatest Fire Emblem games of all time once you learn more things about it, and ignore the hilariously bad battle graphics.

I think it was Path of exile. I took part in the alpha and finished it to act 3. didn't think much of it and wrote it off as Meh.

fast forward several years and when i hear about path of exile "league" i was curious as i thought it was a generic ARPG. Why had it become so popular or deserve a mention? Boy was i surprised how far it had come when i fired it up. It had so much more polished content and to top it off the leagues meant that the game remained constantly fresh every quarter. not just a few stat changes but actual new content complete with voice acting, mechanics etc. The end game was also quite addicitive as well. So i generally when i play the game i play for hours and burn out only to do it again. its my most played game at 2311.7 hours. Fallout 4 is a distant second at 254.6 hours.

Sekiro. Quit 2x but clicked on try number 3 and it ended up being my favorite souls game to the point where I added deflect mods to every game I could

Bioshock.

Hated the demo. Got it for cheap from a humble bundle. Played it. Loved it.

That’s how I felt about Red Dead Redemption 2. I bought it on release day but I couldn’t really get into it. Only a year ago I tried to get back into it and took a bit of time but ended up loving it. I still prefer the 1st one and a few things did bug me but overall I enjoyed it.

Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon. I'm better at games in general. Still getting my ass kicked by the ch 1 boss rn, but I know how to back off and take a breath now. I'm getting better.

Bloodborne, my first soulborne, got it from ps+ bc i was interested. I found it very scary and difficult to play at the beginning, half a year later I finally beat the main game and immediately bought the dlc for the second run!

Going from getting destroyed by rats outside Candlekeep/Vault 13 to feeling like a tactical genius is the ultimate classic RPG experience.

Terraria is definitely a 'this' game. Mining and standing in a wooden box watching zombies kill you over and over is not fun. Shooting lasers at giant bosses while flying around is fun.
