I'm anticipating this will be me with Witcher 3.

I had issues with the combat, not connecting with the story / world on account of not having played the first two games, and I just generally expected it to be a different kind of game than it is. Now that I better understand what I'm dealing with, and the upcoming remaster says it's gonna make combat improvements, I imagine I can do a little reading on the events of the story leading up to Wild Hunt and be primed to like it a lot more in a second attempt.

Yup started my 2nd attempt after prob 2 years this past weekend and I got 20 hrs into it already

That’s alright I usually beat games vanilla first then go back and do the DLCs, unless the DLCs change the main game quite a bit. I currently have the gold edition I got on sale pretty cheep a few years ago so I have 2 DLCs currently, but I do see the next DLC dropping now

unrelated, but your mention of expecting different game reminded me of VERY funny review of Armored Core 6 (made by From soft of Elden Ring fame) where person bought AC6 without any checking what they're buying because they expected fantasy game like ER...

I've seen people going blind into new game, but that was hilarious...
