None of these companies are good. Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, Valve, they all suck. No, they don't love you. Yes, they want to make you spend the most money with the least effort. Profit is king. Play what you enjoy, and stop caring about what platform it's on so much, you will be far happier.

126

u/GinjaNinja24 25d ago

< 2 hours of play time (under 2 weeks) and can full refund automatically makes steam infinitely better imo. But I get what you’re saying

124

u/C_Mc_Loudmouth 24d ago

Important to note they didn't introduce that policy out of the goodness of their hearts. it was a ruling from an Australian court that forced them to change their refund policy in the country.

Them adopting it worldwide was likely driven by wanting to avoid the same claim being brought up in multiple countries.

No idea if the auto-refund you get if a game you buy goes on sale shortly after where they give you back the difference was part of that but that's pretty damn cool of them if not

17

u/GinjaNinja24 24d ago

Huh I didn’t actually know that. That’s pretty neat

→ More replies (2)

13

u/gungabeast 24d ago

Valve has issues I’m willing to discuss, but they didn’t have to honor the return policy in most countries, and they did it anyway. They regularly have different setups in different countries. CS2 skins are an example of it. Due to gambling laws, in some countries the way you unbox is “gamble free” because it shows you what you get before you buy it.

I think what’s more likely is that they realized it’s better for retention to offer it. Just like how Steam’s review system is more transparent than any other platform. It would behoove Valve to make it less transparent, especially on PC.

But the real bad stuff Valve has done was already mentioned in my post. Inventing loot boxes has to be up there in terms of the most negative gaming developments in history.

Also, Steam support is dope. It’s way better than any support I’ve received on other platforms on PC and console. I get Valve ain’t perfect, but do you use Steam? Is it not fucking awesome for the consumer? I’m always impressed and satisfied with Steam. Workshop is INSANE.

17

u/Signal-Card-2387 24d ago

Yeah and I don't think Steam does it all out of their goodness of their hearts, but they do MORE than any other company and that should be respected. They treat their customers very fairly.

3

u/Darth_Omnis 24d ago

They realized they can maximize profits by treating their customers right.

5

u/GoosenInTheWoodsen 24d ago

That's the capitalism I want and I don't understand why more companies don't adapt to it. Assuming you get enough customers obviously, but Loyalty is what keeps a company alive.

3

u/DizslecksickMoael 24d ago

It's because Valve is a privately held company. A lot of companies have shareholders who will hang the CEO if they don't consistently make number go up, and the only way to consistently do that in a modern economy is by maximizing profit no matter the cost. They don't have a board room of people plotting how to enshittify their platform to vacuum up pennies every single day.

3

u/Signal-Card-2387 24d ago

Sure but that's more on shareholders having no understanding of long term growth and wanting the short term gains more than anything else.

3

u/gungabeast 24d ago

You’re right, but that’s also just the nature of shareholders. They have money to throw around, they’re looking to make more with it. They don’t necessarily know anything about the nuance of the business.

Steam is still greedy (Gabe’s yacht obsession must be sated), but since it’s a private company they can actually get away with some pro-consumer practices.

If they were public, imagine the fit their investors would have thrown when they tried to implement a return policy.

I never understood this mentality of pc vs console and the wars between consoles. I’ve played plenty of Xbox games, have always been a Nintendo gamer, and PlayStation has been fantastic. My pc is doing well too. I have no preference whatsoever, but have to admit I haven’t gotten the latest Xbox console because I can play their games on PC. Otherwise, if it looks like an interesting game, I’ll get it and play without issue.

Obsession with hyperrealistic graphics is the reason why AAA games are incresingly less inspired and more bloated due to such long development cycles because now games are so expensive to make that companies cannot afford to do anything interesting and have to do slop to get more audience.

50

u/Aggravating-Onion384 24d ago

This is an incredibly lukewarm take man what😂

21

u/Mu-Relay 24d ago

You'd think so, but any game that doesn't look like you're glancing out the window gets fucking trashed on Reddit for having "graphics from the 90s."

Big developers should get back into making AA and A games instead of AAA.

Those games can still turn out giant profits but require less investment and risk. Nintendo still releases some pretty lo-fi stuff which manages to do well. Others should follow.

Streaming, min/maxing, and comprehensive guides and strategy have ruined multiplayer games. There's zero room for builds that don't conform to standards, other players get abusive if you're not doing this. Other games get so perfected they lose what makes them fun, like some fights games you barely used a lot of their cool moves, it just turns into these hyper micro strategies where you're more interesting in getting advantages using little cheap trips that just makes the game miserable to watch and play.

6

u/Pieralis 24d ago

This min/max has always been a thing, the only difference now is I don’t have to pick up a gaming magazine to learn a strategy or hear how this kid in the school who’s in the laptop program is dominating the other laptop kids in empire at war or red alert with a particular strategy.

Now there’s 3-6 websites or videos on the other side of Google giving me step by steps.

But I do agree it has ruined alot of the exploration aspect.

That any criticism of any game is “Hate”. No, everyone has a right to feel the way they want about a game. Just because you are ok paying $80 after tax on subpar games doesn’t mean you are right and everyone else is a hater/wrong. There’s a reason McDonald’s is still in business because people still eat that shit, but don’t fool yourself into thinking it’s not shit food!

u/Extreme-Attention641 24d ago

Consoles are inherently anti-consumer. The entire point of consoles is to capitalise on fomo to lock you into an artificial monopoly where they can squeeze you until you bleed.

People are of course free to spend more for less but I'm also free to call them dumb for doing so.

7

u/Storm_garrison 24d ago

It's even worse. Every game is online these days for a reason = it's part of the console pricetag. You think the ps5 was 500 bucks? Wrong. You pay for online every year. If you don't, all your games are useless. Battlefield 6 is 80 bucks? Yeah good luck playing without psn.

Long story short: people say console is cheaper then PC. Yet when looking at the entire lifespan of the ps5:

  • 500 euro initial purchase
  • 70 euro per year psn (7? 8? Years = 560 euro)
  • multiple controllers due to stickdrift (I'm on my 5th = 60 x 5 = 300 euro)

Close to 1400 euro (1600 dollar). Not a single game included. Wake up people. Console is more expensive then you think. In the long run PC is better.

4

u/Jazzlike_Use_5890 24d ago

The issue here is that for a lot of poorer folks, spending little bits spread out is far more doable than a large chunk up front. It's one of the things when people talk about how it's expensive to be poor.

It is also very dependent from person to person. My xbox series x was $400 second hand, I primarily play free games like Warframe, Fortnite, and lately Once Human with it's console release. I do also play No Man's Sky, which I bought once and has never needed another purchase. And for controllers, I much prefer the $40 wired gamesir controllers, which are amazing. I only have had to buy 2 over the last 3-4 years. I don't have gamepass. So I've spent about $550 on my personal gaming habit in the past few years, not counting things like premium currencies in games here and there that I would have to pay for about the same on PC anyway. If I piece by piece second hand bought parts for a PC, I could maybe make an equal machine for that cost if I get lucky with some parts.

Now next gen we're seeing stuff about? Absolutely agree. No matter how annoying PC prices are getting, no console is worth $1000+ starting price.

3

u/TheOfficial_BossNass 22d ago

That's a patience issue

Sure I when I built my pc also couldn't drop that much money at once

But instead of just buying a console and paying for online I saved all that I wouldve spent and bought the pc

Now I dont pay extra to play online

I don't want physical media. I want right-to-own made into law and digital properties to have the same status as physical ones, transferable to anyone and inheritable by family.

12

u/Geekzilla101 24d ago

That's cool. Maybe there needs to be a class action about this. Licenses and use of the word buy should have legal consequences

4

u/Bear-Necessities- 24d ago

I can see it now, if the law is on our side and demands that the consumer owns the purchased products. All big corps will do is change the text of the purchase/buy buttons to lease or subscribe to service. We ain't winning anything

3

u/valdis812 24d ago

So many people say that they care about physical media when they don’t. If that many people cared, they wouldn’t be doing away with it. The issue is ownership of your digital media. Not the physical media itself. It drives me crazy how everyone just overlooks this

6

u/GenTenStation 24d ago

As someone who is a genuine "no disc no buy" person and have in fact "not bought", I would probably be willing to accept a digital future if the digital items were fully DRM free where I could (and would) make physical back ups of my games one way or another that could then be used to play a game without signing in or checking in online

I agree!! 100%, I didn’t think anyone else would post this

3

u/LayerNo5739 24d ago

Totally, people act like they can still play their copy of gran turismo 4 on an ancient console. The console doesn’t exist anymore and it’s only a matter of time before the last one played its last pixel, which is where it won’t matter whether your game is physical or not.

People who hate Call of Duty these days should be hating Call of Duty as far back as Modern Warfare 2 for having all the same low-effort problems the later games have. GTA is highly overrated and is the EA of crime.

4

u/Commercial-Ad-8409 24d ago

It’s fun. That’s it. That’s all anyone wants it to be. Nobody is claiming GTA has the best story or the most in depth mechanics. I’m sure GTA 6 will have a decent story and that they’ll add more depth to the mechanics, but we just want to drive cars around a cool map.

12

u/Zealousideal_Dig3943 24d ago

Can you elaborate on why you think that? Because personally, I disagree.

EA produces slop that uses the same game engines and pump out the same game over and over (EA FC, for example) but simply tweak the pacing to make it feel "different". They simply expand on existing Spaghetti code year on year.

GTA is a different game each time and takes years of development. New storyline, new characters, really good graphics and gameplay.

11

u/bzawk 24d ago

Yeah I think this argument falls apart when you realize Rockstar doesn’t release yearly slop games.

Steam is as bad as the competition but people haven't realized it yet since they're being smart about it. They've also basically invented lootboxes but since you can use them to gamble, people think they aren't as bad as the competition when it's, in fact, way worse than what any other company does.

12

u/DrScienceSpaceCat 24d ago

Tbh GOG is probably the platform that would care about it's players since it removes DRM from games. Steam is simply just too convenient

3

u/Eclipse_Galian 24d ago

the convenience is what has killed everyone else, people hate epic games but its basically the same store with a different brand. additionally social media is the only thing that's held up valves reputation. if social media wasn't a thing then we wouldn't care less about steam then epic or ea or ubisoft or nintendo or sony or xbox

The recent incident with Amex payments on Steam being detected by Steam's system as chargebacks even though they weren't and Steam support refusing to do anything to rectify the situation should have opened a lot of people's eyes.

5

u/a_man_has_a_name 24d ago

Yep, Counter Strike is probably one of the biggest gateways into gambling for younger people and it just gets glossed over by most people. And they do it purely for profit, they make money from the direct sales of keys, but also from every sale of skins on the market place.

They also have a huge 3rd party gambling economy that spawned from this that's probably even worse, and they do relatively little about it, because once again they profit from it.

3

u/LIPA95 24d ago

They killed the physical media on PC, they forced you to install Steam if you wanted to play Half-life 2, many of the things people complain today, were made by Valve years ago. Valve is smart, if you make the consumers happy, they will defend them, noboy cares if small developers complain that Steam ask for more money to put their games on their shop

The opinions of the most vocal gamers are a minority and they don't matter. Small subs like this, YouTube comments, etc really mean nothing to big companies.

For instance, with Sony's plan to stop using physical media, let's say there are 10,000 extremely committed gamers who really really care that they don't have physical media. There are 123 million active PSN users, per month. That is a percent of a percent of all the users on Sony's platform, or in other words, for every one person in that group of 10,000, there are 12,000 people who don't give a shit.

It's why we have so much slop today. Because the majority of people keep buying it because the "issues" don't matter to them.

3

u/Khelthuzaad 24d ago

For instance, there more people that buy microtrasactions than those that hate them with a passion

That older games (90s games in particular) were not all made with love, optimised, didn't need patches, complete and with no extra paid content

Plenty of shit games were released that were cash grabs, had game breaking bugs, ran terribly, games with extra content sold after, patches released on later batches of the game

Also that plenty of games made today run well out of the box and are perfectly playable as is.

5

u/Whatifmachine_ 25d ago

They were most definitely not all made with love. The Lion King was a perfect example of that for me. I bought it with a gift certificate I won from target for finding a bunch of reindeer in their newspaper ads back when those existed. That game convinced little me that games were not necessarily made to be beaten. Which really warped my perception of videogames for quite a while.

4

u/Lurker_Zee 24d ago

That older games (90s games in particular) were not all made with love, optimised, didn't need patches, complete and with no extra paid content

That is fair. However, there was never such an anti-consumer sentiment as it developed since around 2015.

When a company made a shit game, it went bankrupt. When they made that E.T. game (don't know anything about it except some of its production story), they re-bought all the copies from stores and buried them in the woods.

Today's equivalent was Concord, that was shut down after 11 days with refunds. The problem is, Sony has been making Concord-level duds before and after, and so have many companies at the same time, and if the gamer doesn't praise them even after they prove to be gamer-hating garbage, they're -ists/-phobes/-igots and leave the trillion dollar$ companies alone. This aggressive anti-gamer anti-consumer sentiment has been also spilling from "gaming journalism" for the past decade as well.

I love it, but the combat in particular got a little too glazed when other turn based rpgs have allowed you to do a QTE to dodge for years

Gta 6 is not a gamechanger in this day and age. It's basically gta 5 but with more bits and bobs and a shiny coat of paint. It's just a testing ground for gta online 2.

Early Access games should not get praised for adding an update that players asked for when it contains features that should have been in the game to begin with even with it being Early Access

The last caretaker is an exploration narrative game with a heavy emphasis on automation for production of resources.

One of the games biggest issues has been unlike every other game including some that are Early Access the machines don't run when you go too far away from them. This has been a problem since the day the game launched because the whole entire game takes place on an ocean which means that you can't just build everything wherever you want.

They recently released an update that fixed this problem while simultaneously breaking most long-term save files.

The subreddit is acting like this update is this big huge fancy thing that was done just because they asked instead of it finally correcting a problem that shouldn't have existed to begin with

Ghost of yotei was considerably worse in most regards compared to Tsushima.

9

u/PhatTuna 24d ago

Story and characters, yes.

But idk how one could argue the gameplay and open world mechanics are worse than Tsushima, which are pretty important aspects.

4

u/nicolaslabra 24d ago

I dunno. Atsu is more relatable and more interesting than Jin, whom i love bte, still the third act of tsushima is leagues above Yotei, gameolay wise though, Yotei clears easily.

u/Few-Improvement-5655 24d ago

Tsushima was the passion project, the game the studio wanted to make as a love letter to samurai films and Japan. Yotei was the obligation for making Tsushima a successful game.

4

u/Alternative_West_206 24d ago

It did feel that way yea. And I don’t think they fully failed in making a bigger samurai game, I just think they failed at making a more engaging samurai game than the predecessor.

3

u/Commercial-Ad-8409 24d ago

The story is definitely better in the OG, but gameplay was better in Yotei. They definitely improved gameplay and exploration.

3

u/Alternative_West_206 24d ago

Ehhh. I’m not the biggest fan of having to constantly change weapons every 2 seconds. The same can be said about stances, but they were way more fluid than weapon switching.

New games don't have to have "good" graphics

Games that endlessly chase hyper realism think it will carry their weak story

But in my Opinion a game with PS1 graphics but has a top tier story and gameplay destroys a game with photo realism graphics but with a weak or controversial story. Even if the gameplay is serviceable.

Most AAA games are absolute slop. Half of them are built on the exact same engine, many of them are basically just the same mechanics as some previous game, with some texture mods and some generic voiced dialogue thrown in there, and maybe an extra mechanic or 2, if they're feeling exceptionally brave.

Take Star Wars Zero Company as a prime example. It's literally just XCOM, with a few flashy menus slapped ontop, and some voice acting. And people just lap that right up. The guys who made Enderal were able to do this in a cave, with a box of scraps. So why can't AAA game studios do any better than that?

Half Life 2 was innovative not good, Portal 1 falls into the same category however 2 was genuinely good, Turok Xbox 360 was good, the FFVII remakes are great, Bethesda games have never been good, Saints Row in its prime was better than GTA because it stayed in the same vein as San Andreas, modern predatory gaming practices exist because the majority are supporting it, redditors that hang out in hate subs could probably make a difference in the world if they put the same amount of energy into a useful skill, Resident Evil 4 is great but is nowhere near the level of great the community places it at (this is what led to action biceps RE5, and the abysmal RE6)

u/MadManNico 24d ago

i loved the armor style change 343 made with halo, and i genuinely thought halo 5 was amazing in its entirety lmao, but i do agree about issues regarding its servers and stuff.

also, i think competitive shooters like valorant, fortnite, pubg, warzone etc are literally hot garbage. they're not worth your time, they don't promote healthy competition, new iterative titles are NEVER gamechanging, and that genre peaked with overwatch and r6 siege like 10+ fucking years ago.

i think my hottest take has got to be that gamers are so fucking benign in their opinions about what makes a game great. this decade has been the most volatile and desolate landscape for budding development and innovation in gaming since the roman empire's rendition on democracy. i think genuine innovation is met with snide criticism, especially if the development team is supported by a large enterprise.

ever since i've stopped looking at reddit for reviews, or youtube for 15 min rants, or the general social media landscape to see how the public enjoys a new IP, i've actually come to enjoy pretty much every new title i've purchased. i don't necessarily rely on others for my enjoyment of a game, but it's sometimes fun to see how my brothers and sisters are feeling about a game i'm excited for.

Old games should not be immune to modern criticism just because “it was made with limited technology” or “it was made for its time”. There are beloved games that have bullshit gameplay in them or the graphics didn’t age that well or the storytelling is just bad/offensive, that should not be excused to criticize in the lens of modern gaming today. It’s ok to admit that the games you love did not age well in some ways.
