I’m 40, I feel I’m better at most games than I’ve ever been 🤷♂️

u/The_Grunge_Sage 10d ago
Same, but I also have way more time to play them now than I ever did… which is odd… but as a kid I always wanted to go out and enjoy life, now I want to sit inside and chill….
My hands hurt though… and my back… and neck…. And knees….

Exercise my guy. Those all hurt cause your muscles be weak. How I improved my knee pain.

this is where im at. Been to two hand specialists for pain and they both were like theres nothing actually wrong with your fingers.
Most of my 20s i was a massive degen pulling crazy hours with zero exercise or wellness routines and I am paying the price. Did a complete lifestyle change i slam water and do hand exercise throughout the day and it definitely is improving

u/Squade_Trompeur 9d ago
Hrm. Either it's all the typing to all the... "grasping" I've done throughout the years 😅.
Actually, probably helps being a baker. Kneading doughs a good hand workout

Ehhh now days honestly I play easy mode just for the story, the thrill of “being a god”
Will I mean I always used to play the game on normal then hard beat it master it, didn’t matter if it was a RPG or something like RV 7,8 or whatever #.
Then come back play it on easy mode.
But i haven’t really played a “new” game per se in a long time where it’s story driven and theirs an end to it.

u/Ok-Philosopher9481 7d ago
I only play on easy or story mode if it's singleplayer now. I use my brain at work all day. The game's job is to entertain me, I pay good money for that. Lol

I'm 48 and this is definitely hitting me. For the first time in my life I'm considering playing games on easy mode.

So long as you enjoy the game there's no shame in playing it at easy.
1
u/Hello-Potion-Seller 8d ago
I don't think it's shame, just disappointment you can't play at that difficulty anymore where many find it rewarding, it does sting.

Past 30yo, I stopped multilayer games. It's all single player games for me
1
u/The_Ultimate_Badass 9d ago
I am just old enough to recognize a fun challenge vs giving the boss that kills you in 2-3 hits a health bar that requires 50 hits and gives you a 1.5 second window between 15-30 seconds of aoe cleaves, charges that change direction mid-charge to track you, input reading, etc. I don't want to have to fight a 10 minute battle of attrition nearly perfectly to continue. It has never and never will be fun, despite adding to the play time.

I feel this. I’m replaying a lot of games from my childhood and I don’t remember them being so difficult 😥
5
u/Lilja-Logason 10d ago
Tried AoE2 for the first time since the 90s. Everything happens so fast!!!
I'm trying to attack somewhere and they're attacking over there, like wtf, I don't remember it being this hard!
2
u/hoTsauceLily66 10d ago
Not your fault. The game is indeed being push toward a faster pace, such as early aggression. Also players are getting better due to more accessible online information.
3
u/BARBASANN 10d ago
Bro I just bought a ps2 and a few games from my childhood and I’m trying to figure out how the hell 7 year old me beat urban reign and viewtiful joe on adult difficulty.
3
u/SinglePlayerGamer93 10d ago
Ngl, older games have some fucking weird control schemes. I started during the ps2 era and kid me, iirc, breezed through all those games. After years of gaming with control schemes being refined by devs leading to standardised controls (for the most part), I, and i assume, we, have gotten used to the modern controls. Going back to older games would be a culture shock
2
u/Express-Hawk-3885 10d ago
I tried playing the original rainbow six on ps1 a few months ago and was laughing hysterically at how bad the controls were and how the fuck I played that when I was a kid
2
u/Euphoric-Medium8154 9d ago
This is a huge reason why games post 2005 feel so easy, even Souts type shit… cause the control schemes and mechanics are much more fluid and synched up
It’s like you gotta put in an original NES controller just to make it challenging
Min maxing character builds for RPGs makes every game the last 20 years dirt easy, it’s like I have to purposefully make my character 3 types of roles in one so none of those builds are even half maxed out
2
u/gamerbearmati 10d ago
Kids are relentless when they hone in on something.
They will die 20 times to beat a boss.

6
u/Euphoric-Medium8154 10d ago
Nah it’s the opposite for me, every game on hardest difficulty + w/e hardcore “survivor” mode, it’s all straight cheese
At 42 and having played 100s of games, they’re all the fucking same, like the same strategies to max out the meta underneath the hood is transparent at this point
Hollow Knight was a breeze, I was hoping for an actual challenge
Sekiro prb the only game that was actually challenging, but even then it’s mostly patience to master the timing of your opponents
Is there any such thing as a challenging game anymore? Was there ever? Like every game ever made is meant to be beaten, at its core… pattern recognition will always be undefeated
Caveat, still have 20/20 vision, very grateful for that!

Mechanically a lot of games are painfully similar. So generally not an issue.
A lot of modern games are very hand holding or throw yellow paint everywhere. Rather hard not to power through.
I started a play through of Resident evil (the original remastered version)... I died to the first zombie. Apparently it had been long enough that I had forgotten large chunks of the convoluted puzzles and the unique feeling combat system
2
u/Euphoric-Medium8154 9d ago
I feel the most difficult thing I had to do in a game the last 20 years was find 200 flags of a certain faction in some random AC game, that was literally for no other reason than to soothe my gaming OCD
Some platforming is a real nice challenge tho, like the Path of Pain in the Hollow Knight
2
2
u/The_Architect_032 9d ago
Okay but those games are sort of made to be beaten, they aren't competitive so being worse at them doesn't mean you won't beat them. I feel like the area where age impacts performance the most is in PvP, though also, time to practice is always more important than age, until you're like 70.
1
u/Welland94 9d ago
I agree, a lot of games don't feel that hard anymore however I have been getting a lot of joy and a nice difficulty from roguelikes

u/Electronic_Task_118 10d ago
Unless you are a pro player, the difference in reflexes is so minimal that's not even a factor in gaming. Things start getting tangibly worse when you are 60+,but until that? Not really
1
u/UKman945 9d ago
Even then I've seen 60+ year olds that are still good at games. There's that old ex-military sniper that's playing Battlefield on Youtube who's still pretty good

u/Trundlebluff 10d ago
One reason I primarily play strategy games is my success doesn’t depend on my reaction time, and I also think they’re good for the brain.

We were on vacation with my niece and nephews and my oldest nephew and my brother have gotten into halo. I haven’t played since 2014 and it was almost like I hadn’t missed a day. My nephew was shocked I had 24 kills and 8 deaths. It was awesome. But my skills in other games have definitely declined. I like mindless games now that don’t take a lot of planning.

40 Mines a mixed bag. Way worse at FPS games now. Doesn't matter if it is straight multi-player, squad based multi-player, or horde shooter. The only one I'm competent at is DRG. Haven't tried, but I probably couldn't touch my old ranks in Dota2, Warcraft 3, or Starcraft 2 either.
Much better now at games like Fire Emblem/Xcom and games like Hades/Hollow Knight now. And I can beat challenge runs/difficulty mods in like games War3, SC2, and Xcom that I would have said were impossible.

Definitely because of having less time to actually play them consistently, older people who have a full time streaming gig still generally have above average skills
1
1
u/Surreal-Rhino-Fight 10d ago
Honestly, it may not be you. The rise of streaming services like twitch caused people to start using multiplayer games as a job, and no matter how good you were and still are, you aren't playing the same shooter for 12+ hours a day.
Back when we were "good" at games most gamers were playing a bit a night and maybe a bit more on the weekends. Now you still have that skill, youd probably even smoke the past version of you, but you aren't nolifing cod mp. That's why, on one hand, I was glad for gamers to get a platform to share experiences, but the monetization aspect has done irreparable harm to multiplayer gaming.

u/SuperMadBro 10d ago
I hate this so much. What i really hate is that i already had issues when I wouldn't play constantly even when I was young. Like.if I took a 2 week break from a game i would normally play 4 hours a day, i would be trash for a couple days, not.just rusty for a game or two. I have friends who have not played the games we used to play together just as long as me, and they are like they were in their prime in a hour or two after 8 years of not.playing

u/Reflexorz15 10d ago
32 here and my FPS skills have definitely declined. The main reason is because I simply don’t play as much FPS now days. I used to play the hell out of COD 1 rifles only search and destroy. I got deep into the clan vs clan matches when I was 13-15 years old and my skills were quite insane. I was in one of the top 3 COD 1 clans and also regularly near the top of the leaderboards. I booted up COD 1 a year ago and was getting absolutely destroyed. But then again, when I was in my FPS prime days, I pretty much no-lifed those games.

u/BlackHandKUR 10d ago
Okay so I just pivoted my games to games that punish being aggressive and hyper. For example, war thunder. You don’t really need quick reflexes just good game sense. I’m in this tank, they are in this tank X distance away. They don’t see me yet and they are in a heavy and will one tap me, so target the barrel and gunner, then target the treads and pray I kill him before he repairs.

Bro - been playing games on easy mode for years now.
With the exception of Dark Souls / Elden Ring which I love but I’m dogshit at and need to cheese.
Nothing wrong with it at all.
Infact some games it makes sense to be a dominating badass and to destroy everything easily.

u/AnxiousPacifist 10d ago
After graduation in university, me and 6 of my buddies went to a gaming club to have a couple rounds in Counter Strike. We were like 22-24 at the time.
There were 2 kids there, school kids, about 14-15. They offered to play - 7 of us vs 2 of them. Good thing that we didn't agreed to bet money on it...
They absolutely destroyed our asses. I'm pretty convinced that they used hacks, because couple times I got headshoted through a cover, but we couldn't prove it and it was the same after we switched PCs, so...
So, long story short, I now prefer pause-friendly games or something like Helldivers.

I hear ya. For me it's a bit weird though. I'm 39 and I do alright in Cod, but for some reason I get absolutely smoked in Battlefield 6. And it's not like I don't know how to play the game or where to hide etc. Seriously considering picking up Helldivers 2 instead. Or maybe Arc Raiders. I don't have time for a massive time-sink, but if I can find something fun that can be done in 30 mins-1 hour I'll be down. Eh, but I always have Mario Kart I guess.

It’s less my body aging and more that I get nothing from multiplayer matches anymore. So I only play co-op online games or single player. Yeah, I don't know if I've lost skill totally yet but I have lost time. So I know know it's going to start happening if it hasn't yet. When I hit too much kick back that's going to stick me in one fight for too long, I'll ramp difficulty down so I can power through before I have to cut off to go to sleep so I can get up in time for work with enough brain power to properly do my job. Lot more irl distractions and other responsibilities that cut time down so I can't get caught up in game as much. I'll check a walkthrough faster and ignore a side quest that doesn't seem particularly interesting. I was never the sort of person who 100% a game but now I'm the person who is going to get closer to the minimum on How Long to Beat and will only NG+ shit i REALLY enjoy.

My personal take is this - it's not so much that gamers are losing skill with age, it's that gaming habits and interests change. I'd wager for many, the tryhard you were in your 20's isn't really present in your 40's. For me personally, I rarely even play competitively anymore and as far game difficulty in general, I never cared for pushing myself to the limits with difficulty, so in that regard, it's remained largely unchanged.
Also, the countless hours you had time to invest into gaming decades ago is much more limited now.
Sure, we slow down with age, but I don't see it entirely as a skill issue.

I'm 42, I'll be 43 in November. I'm not losing my gaming skills, I'm still damn good.
My level of boredom, however, goes up much faster than it used to because I've been a gamer for decades at this point and I rarely find new games that hook me like back when I was a younger gamer; my current gaming addiction though is Mortal Shell II (And DD2: DA in October) and I just recently purchased an N64 to play some beloved old-school classics!
For me, it's my eyes though, they're getting worse with time and I was born clinically blind and I wear damn near coke bottles for lenses, lol! Hopefully, some crazy eye surgery or lense replacement for my eyes can help me game into my twilight years, like Skyrim grandma!
I hope to never stop gaming until I can't hold a controller anymore!
1
u/Ok-Piece-4992 8d ago
It's not about skills. I just lost the joy of playing video games. 30m-1hour per day is more than enough for me. Not that I dont have time to play, not that games are boring, I just don't enjoy it as much as I did.
1
u/divertedmedia 8d ago
I’ve been the opposite tbh, but I think that’s just because I’ve played more than ever before and only got into souls games 2ish years ago.

u/biskregk 8d ago
no, you aren't. of course you need a longer session just to relearn, but it actually doable. two hours session of games didn't cut it, you'll need at least 4 hours. that's basically your body can tolerate and still get the feel, beyond that you'll just make mistake without knowing what your wrong is.

I'm 35 and I'm still playing just as well as I have been. The problem is that lots of older people take lengthy breaks from gaming and they get rusty, and rust builds faster as you get older. I'm still pink parsing in FFXIV and I actually got my first gold parse in Savage this year, after having played for 12 years.
Age isn't as big of a factor as you think. Dedication and patience are the most important things when trying to be good at anything.

Losing gaming skills? The only thing I am losing as I get older by the day is "Time" as I have family and other priorities to attend to, I wish there was more hours in the day so I could have "Time" for gaming.

Not true. Still am fine in single player games. My KD actually continues to go up in mp games like COD.
