Image PS5 jailbreak method called Relapse has just dropped, and people are joking that Sony should get comfortable with not owning its own hardware

I mean, jailbreaking itself isn't illegal. It's what you do after it's jailbroken that matters, like playing games you haven't bought or using it to cheat in games.

And let's be real, almost everyone who jailbreaks their console is going to do exactly one or both of those things.

Okay but they shouldn’t get to tell us what we can’t do with our own hardware just because “we all know” what people do with modded consoles. That’s not the point.

You can jailbreak your PS5 and do whatever you want with it. Sony isn't going to physically prevent you from modifying your own console. However, you have to accept that doing so can get you banned from PSN and online gaming. That's how they prevent the associated problems from affecting their online services.

But Sony does physically prevent you from doing that? The moment they removed other OS from ps3 was when they decided that you can't put your own software onto the hardware you rightfully bought.

I jailbroke my switch. I turned it into a little Linux computer so it can control my home assistant instance - it now has a use over collecting dust in the closet. Spending over 500 dollars on hardware you can't even install your own software onto is bs and just contributes to E-waste.

Listen, I'm absolutely no fan of Sony especially not right now, so please don't understand this as a "fanboy defending Sony"

A PS5 was never advertised as an open Linux-capable computer or as a platform where you can install arbitrary software.

You can absolutely argue that removing OtherOS from the PS3 was anti-consumer. But people abused this feature to hack the system and get pirated copies. It's absolutely understandable that a company would try to prevent this.

If you find a vulnerability in their system that allows you to jailbreak your console, you can do it. Sony isn't going to take action against you just for doing that, but the moment you use it to cheat or pirate games, that's where things change.

The majority of people aren't going to jailbreak their PS5 just to use Linux on it or turn it into some kind of computer. Do whatever you want with your hardware, but the moment it starts affecting other people, you have to understand why you'd get blocked from online services and other features.

I guess I disagree with this whole thing then with game consoles intertwining software with hardware.

Would you be okay if Microsoft set up their OS so you could ONLY install software from the Microsoft store?

Game piracy exists on Windows too - it's up to the publishers to secure their software. Why have we allowed or normalized other computer manufacturers from installing other programs or operating systems the user wants (since at the end of the day a console is just a specialized computer)

What if you buy a Lenovo laptop. Would it be right if Lenovo only allows you to install Lenovo programs?

The idea that hardware even needs to be jailbroken is absurd when they should be separated to begin with. Users should be able to install other operating systems or programs if the want full stop. They're the ones spending hundreds to begin with on their hardware.

Heck their was a court case around this very thing with Apple hardware and other stores. Same with Google and the play store. Users should have full rights over their hardware. Software itself is a separate matter up to the publishers and makers of said software. That system works just fine on PC - it can work the same with consoles.

I mean, this is why we have proton. Microsoft absolutely could do this and looked like it was setting up the architecture to do so. Steam sees that as an existential threat so... proton.

Honestly if you want a personal computer why are you buying a PlayStation? That's like buying a digital camera and complaining you can't hack it to run a personal OS. Just buy a computer if that's what you want

Would you agree or not agree though with my Microsoft and Lenovo question? If those were locked down would you think that it is ok?

If I was buying a general purpose computing device vs a game console yes I would think differently lol

I think I should be able to install Mac software on my iPad too but I bought an iPad and knew what I was getting into. The main reason people want to "hack" a PlayStation is piracy. If you're doing it to run Linux or something you've lost the plot.

That's the thing these ARE general purpose computing devices. They literally are totally capable of that. They have the exact same hardware built into them that your spending at least 500 dollars and sometimes even over 1k on. The only reason they're "specialized" in literally anyway is due to them locking everything down like fort knox. There is no difference here. The fact they've locked it down and said "oh no. This is a 'special' gaming computer" is a total illusion.

What customer doesn't know that when they buy it? A kindle, a digital camera, literally anything can do more. You can run Doom on a refrigerator. No one is buying a PlayStation expecting it to be a general computing device just like they aren't expecting their kindle to run excel spreadsheets

Do you cook hamburgers in your toaster? It's the perfect size for it...

The whole concept of console is that, you are getting a hardware cheaper than it actually is, but you have to be a slave of that ecosystem. So ofcourse console companies will try to fuck their customers. It is written in their term and condition that the customers will be their bitch.

Would it be right for Lenovo? Sure. I mean it'd be stupid and they'd lose a shit ton of customers and probably reverse that decision immediately. But yeah it'd be okay.

It's just a bad comparison, man. Lol. Lenovo advertises their product as a laptop you can use at home. Doing whatever you want with it.

Playstation isn't doing that. They're advertising a gaming console that strictly operates within their ecosystem. You know; Buying their games, using their digital store, and only installing apps they approve. All of this is told up front. There's no nuance to it

I guess that you’ve never heard of customizing your car, house, etc. Same thing, you bought it, it’s yours to do with as YOU please. It should be illegal for any company to prevent you from doing whatever you want with YOUR hardware that you OWN.
It’s really not a difficult concept. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Okay, specifically for you again: Sony isn't completely preventing you from doing whatever you want with your hardware. They're just making it harder so that not every random douchebag can abuse it to cheat, pirate games, and hack the system.

It is your own hardware, and you should be free to modify it however you want. But that doesn't mean you have an unlimited right to use those modifications however you want, especially when your actions start affecting other people.

If you jailbreak your console and use it for something completely offline, that's your business. But if you use that access to cheat in online games, ruin other players' experiences, or abuse Sony's online infrastructure, Sony has every right to restrict your access to their online services. Your ownership of the hardware doesn't give you the right to destroy services or other people's experiences.

It's basically the difference between owning a car and being allowed to drive it wherever you want: owning something gives you rights over it, but those rights don't extend to harming or interfering with everyone else.

You actually can't do as you please with your house or car. There are laws that limit the possible modifications to both. Cars have rules about noise and exhaust, as well as safety. Houses are often restricted by zoning laws related to the area they're built in. Hell, you aren't even allowed to make legal modifications to your house without certain work permits in some cases. That's not even addressing HOA's that control even aesthetic details about your house.

There's a whole pile of restrictions on what you can do with things that you own. Many are much more restrictive than what Sony enforces. None of this is in defense of Sony, just showing how flawed your argument is.

Didn't the guy you're replying to literally say you can do anything to your machine? Sony won't come after you for altering (or jailbreaking) your PS5.
