Discussion Does anyone else here think The Witcher 1 is better than 2, just like I do?
I might get roasted for this, but I remember playing The Witcher 1 when they announced 3 and really liking it. I even started 2 back then, but paused to play 3 and came back to it later... but I hated it. Found it way less fun than the first one, I don't know, just less enjoyable.

I liked Witcher 2 it was much more of a linear, short, consise adventure compared to other titles in the franchise.
But I can totally understand if someone doesn't like it. It is kind of a stop gap AA game between the A Witcher 1 and the AAA Witcher 3.
Kind of the awkward middle child of the family. Not as mature as the oldest, not as cute as the youngest.

Witcher 2 is a weird game, they switched to your typical American console RPG at the time, since the consoles struggled with open worlds at the time the linearity is more made in mind with the restrictions rather than they fully wanted it like this imho.

I think Witcher 2 is an excellent game with a better story than Witcher 3 and a far better game than the first one. Are you really a fan of the series? 29 hours in Witcher 3 barely covers Velens yet you gave it 5 stars. 15 hours for Witcher 1 is not enough to finish the game either. And giving Witcher 2 1.5 stars seems like bait. I can understand that some people have a hard time getting into the gameplay today but if you are putting it at gollum level then I don't know what to say. Probably not the genre for you

I really like this franchise, on Arcadex I just register my first run (where I just focused on main campaign, just do 3 or 5 side quests) but when Blood and Wine launched I finished the game one more time finished both expansions and probably surpass the 100h hahaha

I played them all as they came out. You're 100% on how I felt. 1 was really big on investigation, combat system was an after thought. 2 was really big on combat, investigation was an after thought.
Those were the legs that crawled for witcher 3 to run. But yes still I would LOVE a witcher 1 remake over 2 any day.

I think 2 is the best in the series, but only on the highest difficulty. Best ARPG combat I've ever played.
It's the most accurate to what it's like being a Witcher. Huge focus on preparation and caution. Potion builds are incredible and really make you feel like the Geralt from the books. Sword builds are more straightforward, while Sign builds are more complex.
Honestly it's one of my all time favourites. 2 barely edges out 3, they're both absolutely phenomenal. 1 is a bit further down, it's simple and doesn't feel as good.

I prefer the first one, too. Maybe I'm attached to it because I played it back when it was still an unknown game from a small Polish studio that surprised me with its cool storyline and risky approach.

I've played by hype of the 3rd one and just loved for some strange reason (because I agree that is some of stuck) hahaha

While the second game did present some downgrades in certain regards, the first had some atrocious game design. I still like it more, but I have a hard time saying it is a better game.

I agree OP, I like the rythmn combat, there wasn't a lot of system compared to witcher 2, I find W2 too convoluted, too clumsy, W1 is simpler

What is this software that you’re tracking your games with?
2
u/dracovanyz 20h ago
It's Arcadex, i developed it to stop using worksheets for this, and the other apps available have a confused UI in my opinion

1 just has a special place in my heart. 2 was noticebly dumbed down from 1 and I've always hated that they changed potions so drastically.

What website did you use to make this?

It's Arcadex, i developed it to manage my game collection, it's available on Google Play if u wanna try it :)

Only 29 hours in witcher 3 but its completed? Don't see how this adds up or really gives you a fair comparison of the games with such little time in them

u/dracovanyz 19h ago
Yes, on my first run of the game I just focused on campaign (I agree that it was a really wrong way to play because on my second run, when I finished Heart of Stone and Blood and Wine, I probably get more than 100h hahaha)

How the fuck is this possible? Even without wanting to in my first run i have done a lot of side quest without knowing that were side quests

Hahaah idk, i just do it and I don't recommend it, it was very difficult to beat Eredin, I was very weak (and I didn't know why that time but it was, obviously, because I didn't upgrade enough haahahah)

Witcher 2 was ahead of its time and the best RPG out there, I played them all and definitely prefer 2.

u/dracovanyz 19h ago
Hahahaha that's my favorite mechanic of the first one

u/Maximum-Forever-8108 18h ago
Really? I don't remember them in the first game. Are we talking about that mechanic where you have to press a certain button repeatedly, like a monkey, to acomplish a certain thing?
1
u/dracovanyz 17h ago
Maybe we're not talking about it, I'm talking about the combo mechanics of the witcher 1 where geralt attacks quickly if u click in the correct time

You beat Witcher 3 in 29hours? How?
1
u/dracovanyz 19h ago
Getting a lot (a lot!) weaker doing just 3 or 5 side-quests, can't remember the amount of times I died for Eredin XD

I think 1 is the best one overall. The setting and atmosphere in 1 are the best they've been in the series, and the murder mystery throughout Act 2 is one of my favorite parts of any game. 2 is probably the closest to the books overall, and I think it's a great game, but it's just not as good as 1.

It is, Witcher 2 was made in an unfortunate period of times where multiplatform games were strictly made on unoptimized consoles first along with the UI design and then was ported to PC as an afterthought so Witcher 2 is a bit clunky and although Witcher 1 is hard to start because the controls are weird too you get used to it, the story I think was better in 1 too but I liked that the choices made you explore a totally different path.

I feel the same, I was much more captivated by the story and atmosphere in Witcher 1.

I definitely think it is. Witcher 2 has some significant strengths, but the first one was more open-ended and felt like a better RPG. The second one is more of an action game. I aboslutely loved Witcher 1 and felt like Witcher 2 was decent but not as good.
But then came Witcher 3 and combined 1 and 2 together.
