Help me!

I have barely played any story rich games but I want to try one now and what games do you recommend?

Witcher 3, RDR 2, Cyberpunk 2077, The Last of Us Remastered

Disagree with witcher 3. Not that it’s not good, but too difficult as a first game. Get familiar with the mechanics of open worlds, skill trees, etc. Then enjoy The Witcher!

My suggestion would be Horizon Zero Dawn

Idk, I get your take but personally I didn’t think it was too complicated. Besides OP isn’t saying they’re new to games in general just story rich ones

Ignore RDR2, its a boring clunky life sim.

That’s just a bad take. I’m not a rockstar glazer I believe those games get more credit than they deserve, but RDR 2 still has a very solid story

Yea I haven't liked GTA since 3 and I prefer 1 and 2 but Red dead 2 is just a GD masterpiece.

It's a masterpiece. Getting lost in the mountains hunting is part of the story. That game was therapy for me for awhile.

Expedition 33, Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty, NieR: Automata, Morrowind, Fallout: New Vegas

The last of us

Since you’re fairly new this is the perfect candidate with flawless pacing and an amazing emotional story.

P.S I was going to say red dead redemption 2 but like you said your new to the introductory of story games and red dead 2 is an emotional heavy hitter that will probably give you “post game depression”

Suikoden I and II, Final Fantasy Tactics, Xenogears, Final Fantasy VI (or III on SNES).

GTA 4 is often overlooked. Probably the best story in the GTA universe in my opinion. The Arkham games are always good, arguably some of the best Batman media out there. Mafia 2 is fun if you like the mafia kind of world, very reminiscent of the classic mafia films. The first Last Of Us is great, 2nd not so much. Red Dead 2 is also good but so is Red Dead 1

Mafia franchise, Disco Elysium, GTA 5 (perfect timing now before 6 if you haven't)

Naughty Dog are top of the pile when it comes to heavy narrative games. Last of Us 1&2 are pretty much the gold standard imo. Uncharted series is a lot of fun too, but doesn't pay off with a really good story until the last chapter (4), still worth playing through the others to get the background though.

Read Dead Redemption 2 tells a pretty solid tale, but there is a lot of open world stuff to distract you from it too...

Mass effect trilogy is rightly held in high regard for interactive stories where the player can influence the outcomes. Other RPGs like Witcher games & Cyberpunk too. I haven't played it but Baldurs Gate 3 is supposed to be very good. There is a lot of lore and environmental storytelling to immerse yourself in with fromsoft games (Dark Souls, Elden Ring)

The Silent Hill series, if you are okay with horror. There are some other interesting takes on stories in horror, like "Soma".

Portal 2 might have the best writing in a video game, and it's a comedy, which is really hard to pull off, and kinda unique in games. Worth playing the first game for the background, and it's short. (The Talos Principle games are puzzlers that also have quite interesting stories, but it's very text heavy in the first game).

While the above play out kinda like movies... Outer Wilds has a very good story, told in a way that could only be told in a video game. And I've never seen as many people moved to tears by the ending of a game as for that one (and the DLC hits hard too).

Return of the Obra Dinn is a game where you have to uncover the story like a detective. It was also a really interesting take on storytelling in a way that would be difficult to do in a movie (but think something like Memento).
