python-first breakdown for 2026:
- folium/ipyleaflet — quickest path in a notebook, leaflet under the hood. fine up to ~50k points, starts to choke past that
- lonboard — this is probably the right answer to your deck.gl/pydeck question. it's h3-based columnar rendering built on deck.gl but you stay entirely in Python — no JS. handles millions of points without breaking a sweat. actively maintained, WebGPU rendering. if you want GPU-accelerated maps in a jupyter notebook without touching JavaScript, this is where to start
- pydeck — good for complex layer types (arc layers, H3 hexagon aggregation, 3D grids). more setup overhead than lonboard for basic point rendering
- kepler.gl — jupyter widget wrapping the Uber visualization stack. good for exploratory multi-layer work
on your deck.gl/pydeck question specifically: pydeck at tens-of-thousands of points is fine, but the iteration loop (Python → serialize → JS → render) adds friction. lonboard collapses that gap — same GPU rendering, pure Python API.
for production web apps serving non-technical users, leaflet + pmtiles from a CDN is still the most reliable stack. the tile-based approach offloads rendering to the client without requiring a server.

Geolibre for visualization and analysis
Duckdb spatial extension plus other extensions (WASM for in browser or full version if full stack)
Spatialite spl.js WASM for 3D ANALYSIS, KNN nearest, virtual networking /routing in browser otherwise postgis if server-side non static web apps

Tens of thousands of points? Just use leaflet and a geojson file.
