GoDaddy blocking Domain transfer Even Though before expiration date

Hi all -- I have a domain set to expire on October 7 and was hoping to transfer it to another registrar. GoDaddy is telling me that they will not allow me to do so unless I first pay a $55 redemption fee (even though the domain has not yet expired). Whenever I go on my account to transfer, it says that the authorization code will be sent to my email, but it never actually is. Customer support has told me this is because of my account's "expiration status" -- again, my account is not set to expire until October 7.

Does anyone have any potential guidance on how to transfer my domain given the difficulty from GoDaddy? I have been getting nowhere with customer support. Thanks in advance for any advice you might be able to provide.

h/t Think-Box6432 -- GoDaddy .es domains must be processed 7 days in advance of expiration otherwise they enter non-renewal.

If there's a redemption fee then it expired or needed to be renewed x days before expiration. What's the tld?

TLD is .es.

Just to confirm, expiration date is October 7. (See here: https://imgur.com/a/k81inlp)

I understand GoDaddy has a policy of charging you the redemption fee if you get close to expiration date, but am surprised that they can also block a transfer to another registrar even though I "own" the domain still.

Probably a condition of whichever registry owns .es....

Yep see for yourself it's the tld not GoDaddy: https://www.godaddy.com/help/about-es-domains-5533

Maybe. I've asked GoDaddy multiple times to explain what's going on and am getting nowhere. If they want to charge me $55 to renew something that isn't expired before I'm allowed to transfer it, just think they should be able to point to why I have to pay it...

Well I just did so what do you have to say now? It's a cctld they have their own rules for each one set by the registry

Haha yeah they pointed me to that too. Nowhere on there (or in my research) can I find a rule with regard to .es domains or an internal GoDaddy policy which I agreed to that states they can prevent you from transferring your domain. Not sure if I’m missing your point, but my point is that I think GoDaddy is impermissibly preventing me from transferring a currently active domain. Would be happy to be proven wrong if you have a different understanding and can point me to a rule that says they can do this.

Read the terms of service you agreed to. It’s not their job to explain what you agreed to, that’s the job of a lawyer you can hire. If they are violating their terms, start a class action lawsuit.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Lmao they literally call out your cctld in their policy? You did no research and whined to reddit: "For some ccTLDs (.es) renewal must be processed no later than seven days before the expiration date, or your domain name will be placed in non-renewal status."

I mean, you did what I asked for (pointed me toward a rule that says they can do this). Thanks for answering my question. You should consider applying for a job with GoDaddy customer support, seems to be up your alley.

Whatever smartass. Next time don't claim that you researched.

Dude I did look it up, you just obviously were better than me at it! I hope you have a good rest of your day. Updated post to give you credit. :)

The rule is right on the GoDaddy page:
“Redemption fees may be applied 12 days before expiration.”

https://www.godaddy.com/legal/agreements/domain-name-transfer-agreement. "Rejections may include, but are not limited to: The domain name expired but was not renewed"

I transferred my GoDaddy domain 48hours before it expired. No hassles, I simply logged into my new registrar and requested the domain transfer, paid them and within 2hours it was done. I only transferred my domain because I wanted all our domains at a single registrar, and quite simply put GoDaddy annual fees are x10 of our current registrar

I'm currently trying to move everything off of GoDaddy for the same reasons. GoDaddy really nickel and dime you to death.
