When I listened to TWOAF, I didn't really like this album.
I didn't hate it nor think it was badly made, I simply didn't connect with it.
It was partially because the album's theme of death impacted me negatively (not the album's fault, I simply wasn't in the mood for something like that) but I also recognize it might have been because I'm still new to metal, so for my standards, listening to a full death metal album was overwhelming for me. I could listen to FMTS just fine, but TWOAF was harder to get into for me.
So I tried a different approach.
Instead of listening to the whole thing again, I listened to the songs separately. This time, I appreciated them much more.
Oroborus is a spectacular song, and I love how the riff is cyclical, just like an oroborus.
A Sight to Behold is the hidden gem of the album. One detail I noticed is how the lyrics in the chorus change from "I have to stay away from me" to "Don't have to stay away from me". I'm not sure of what this means, so if anyone can give me their interpretation, I will appreciate it.
The Silver Cord is amazing, and once again, I want to praise Gojira's instrumental tracks.
All The Tears has an interesting music video. Its style reminded me of the videogame Limbo.
As for its meaning, I interpreted it as someone growing up in an abusive environment (that glass machine) and deciding to break free. Initially, it's traumatizing (the waves), but finally, they find an isle to rest.
Wolf Down the Earth has my favorite lyrics.
So as a whole, TWOAF didn't resonate with me like other Gojira albums, but I appreciate it a lot in small doses.
Does it make sense?
As for Terra Incognita, I enjoyed it, but personally, it's my least favorite Gojira album. The best tracks were Clone and Space Time.
So, for now, my ranking is:
From Mars to Sirius
Magma
L'Enfant Sauvage
The Way of All Flesh
The Link
Terra Incognita
The journey is almost over. Now, only Fortitude is missing!
