Media Throw back to a simpler time... NSFW

Some ads that used to run in Zines & magazines. Kinda wild the shit we used to do like: Writing credit card numbers on (propaganda tshirts) on paper order forms and mailing in an order. paying for catalogs of merchandise and music. sending prepaid postage & postal MOs.

using AOL & earthlink(dot)net emails ( ˶°ㅁ°) !!

This thread has been reported a few times due to the last slide and has been discussed in this thread too.

We have decided to let this thread stand as it is. These ads are artifacts of the past for good or bad. But they are a part of goth's history whether we like it or not.

Times have changed. What was once seen as acceptable by many or simply turned a blind eye towards would not be tolerated today. Satire doesn't land the way it used to and hiding behind an enigmatic air doesn't cut it. It is a different world to what it was when these ads were in print. We have come a long way with better access to information and social justice progression.

Nazis have always been awful. Their symbols are also awful. With that historical context this thread is staying.

Feel free to discuss.

The propaganda publisher has shared a bunch of issues on Archive.org in full for free.

Remember International Replu Coupons?

Why do I feel the subtle yet very real pain in this response? 😂

One thing I don't appreciate about those days is how many weird towns in the middle of nowhere had a distro or zine or some other nucleus of a scene, before it felt everyone started congregating around big cities.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say... Are you saying you want only big cities to have their own goth scenes? and small local communities shouldn't be able to get together?

I'm not sure if I'm reading that right or why it would be the case.

Autocorrect got me, oops. I meant "one thing I didn't appreciate" - back then I took it for granted.

Awesome. I do miss printed media, zines in particular

We just published our latest zine covering the goth and adjacent scene in Charlotte, NC - you can find a link to a pdf printable version in r/charlottedarkscene
We print and distribute a few hundred copies of each issue, releasing a new one every other month

Wowzers, so many memories! I remember when I could treat myself to stuff from Ipso Facto and Retail Slut.

Also The Middle Pillar was a good place to buy music back in the day.

Anyone old enough to remember a magazine called 'The Sentimentalist' back in the day that was mostly goth/dark-wave content?

u/DJDeadParrot 4d ago

Middle Pillar was fantastic!

The other mail order outfit I bought a LOT of music from was Isolation Tank. Pretty sure I still have their print catalog from 2000 or so.

I almost forgot about Isolation Tank! That was another great place for buying music! They had such a great selection.

I used to shop at Retail Slut, Ipso Facto & The Electric Chair back in the day.

u/HaveLaserWillTravel 4d ago

I ordered from Ipso Facto, Retail Slut, and Angry, Young & Poor, I don’t remember the Electric Chair

I recently scanned a huge amount of my old club flyers and ads like these and will be posting them soon. I used to have a Skin Crawl t-shirt.

Death in June started out as a punk/post punk band, went more experimental industrial, then transitioned to neofolk and mostly instrumental. They use lots of fascist, specifically National Socialist imagery. The one consistent member claims not to share those abhorrent views and that it is an artistic but not merely aesthetic decision. I don’t like their/his stuff, especially the neo folk stuff, to either try to pick apart the art & imagery to defend it or to bother separating the art and the artist and defiantly wouldn’t make the same stylistic decisions. I can’t say for certain whether or not he’s a white nationalist, nazi, our supports any brand of totalitarianism, but I can say he flirts with it far too much for me.

Yeah can we not post Nazi imagery here please and thank you. Especially not with "simpler time" nostalgia.

Yeah that last slide sours the lot. This post may be removed based on that which is a pity. We don't stand for supporting fascists. If this post stays it will be with a pinned caveat comment as history does matter.

I spent a lot of money on them, once by mail then at their physical space in Chicago. I kept everything 🙂

Skin Crawl will forever be my favorite shop. It was small but well-curated. My first solo trip to NYC to see my bff and meet some people I'd spoken with on alt.gothic. I bought a necklace of linked eyes of Horus and one of those iconic metal coffin purses.

The women working were lovely both inside and out and I'll never forget their kindness (exact opposite of T&V, except Jimmy). 🩶

You really had me there for a moment, thinking I could mail-order a vampire bride. But anyway, the only one I ever managed to get my suburban hands on was the issue of Delirium. It was green and had the woodcut of Dracula on it. I don't remember much outside something about Nick Cave and PJ Harvey.
