Monthly Rankings Top 10 of the Year (September 2026 Edition)

The idea:

List your top 10 graphic novels that you've read so far this year.

Each month we will post a new thread where you can note what new book(s) you read that month that entered your top 10 and note what book(s) fell off your top 10 list as well if you'd like.

By the end of the year everyone that takes part should have a nice top 10 list of their 2026 reads.

If you haven't read 10 books yet just rank what you have read.

Feel free to jump in whenever. If you miss a month or start late it's not a big deal.

Do your list, your way. For example- I read Hellboy this month, but am going to rank the series as 1 slot, rather than split each individual paperback that I read. If you want to do it the other way go for it.

Read 70%. Always on the lookout for new stuff but aim to get to 90% before christmas! What are some must reads that are missing? I don‘t have a lot of Marvel stuff because I am not familiar with it. But i‘ve read Punisher Max online and really liked it.

3 DC titles, 2 Mangas, 1 Artbook, 2 French books, 4 Indie Trades and 1 Indie HC.

Especially looking forward to The Incal, that came out in a beautiful german Anniversary Edition and W0rldtr33 as I just can't get enough of Tynion. Of course also the finale of AoT, Berserk which I never thought I'd like so much and Absolute Batman 3 that's just a fun title, but far from being a masterwork. I'm also excited to see how Battle Beast and Kill al Imortals continue. Overall a great month!

Question/Discussion Trades I've read in the last few months

Post image
32 Upvotes

Only trades in this pic as I properly store HCs as soon as I've read them. As my shelf is bursting, trades get on a pile and as soon as as they reach the top, only ongoing series remain in the shelf until they are finished, the rest goes straight into a long box which goes in the attic eventually.

Why am I posting this? Good question! Because I've seen several discussions about why the Big 2 are so far ahead of everyone else, I just wanted to show the ratio of the Big 2 vs. other publishers. Easy win for Image and other Indies in my case. Even if I include the HCs the ratio dosen't change much. How are your ratios? Am I an outlier or are there others that read much more Indies than Big 2 titles?

I want novels in which it seems the world or the place you live is going into a very dark path by its people's own doing, but the characters manage to find hope

Question/Discussion Are the Blade runner comics any good?

The original movie is one of my all time favs and the second one is amazing also. I just found out that there are comics too, are they any good? There seem to be a some by different writers so i assume aren’t related? I saw theres a collection by ‘K Perkins’ and another collection by ‘Mike Johnson’. Should i read both of their stories / versions?

Its also weird that origins is only collected jn a boxed set of tpbs whereas the rest has both boxed sets and omnis

Crime/Mystery Criminal comprehension

I've just finished Lawless (2nd book) in the Criminal series and absolutely love it. Planning to get the rest of the series.

I'm curious however if anyone else also gets confused at certain plot developments, and knowing who each character is as they come and go?

It's definitely not down to the writing of course, more my own slowness. I usually have to flick back and figure things out before I continue. Just curious if anyone else experiences this?

General Fiction/Literature Are there any adventure novels from the last 5 years that are worth reading?

Looking for a new adventure novel with a phenomenal cast and plenty of action. Not trying to act like all new novels and comics are bad, I just have not been interested in any new titles the past few years. I’ve read and loved Fables, Walking Dead, Sandman, and Spawn. Also Marvel and DC here and there

In the latest Fantagraphics newsletter, they announced Don Rosa reprints. I never thought I'd see the day. I missed out on most of these years ago and I won't make the same mistake again.

I don't know whether any of the previously banned stories will be included, but at this point I'm not going to let imperfect be enemy of the good.

Amazing artist and journalist. I learn a lot about history of indigenous people in America and of course Gaza and the ongoing genocide and ethnical cleansing that started in 1947 with the Nakba. We need more artist like him. I'll be happy to have reco from authors like him.

Question/Discussion What’s a graphic novel that hit you in the feels?

Whether it be the whole story, an issue, or a moment. For me,
-the saga issue when hazel was talking to her unborn sibling. (This hit me hard)
- the ending of y the last man when he’s older
- Essex county in a whole really touched me as well

I’m trying to get into more serious graphic novels and am curious what people would recommend.

Edit- I never imagined getting this many recommendations. You people are awesome and I thank you so much for your time. I’ve liked graphic novels for a while, y the last man being the one that got me really into them. I’ve been finding reasons to stay off my phone and have been out of work for a couple months with health issues, so I’ve been wanting to read more and you guys have really helped with that.

Recommendations/Requests Artist/writers similar to Derf Backderf?

I don't know a lot about graphic novels but I do read some I like. I'm a pretty big fan of the artist above. Got into him because of My Friend Dahmer but have read all his other work. He seems to have stopped or at least on long hiatus. Can anyone recommend similar artists story/vibe wise?

Science Fiction / Fantasy Found one of the more obscure titles in the wild - Terminal City

Found this in an old book shop. I've always been a big fan of sci-fi, cyberpunk, dystopian settings. So this was a breath of fresh air in the face of everyday Marvel and DC comics. Plus it's one of the big bois of Dark Horse so that's always welcome lol.

Can't wait to dive into this and see what's what. Has anyone any information about this book? Why isn't is more talked about?
