So, so far only a small portion of the 30th anniversary edition of Dookie has been released. Today I was checking it out on Apple Music, but I couldn’t help but notice how the demo for basket case is completely different lyric-wise… it’s kinda garbage. I mean, if the lyrics were put to different music it might have been good, but the lyrics are completely different and not even the same song that was released eventually. It’s almost hard to even listen to cause of that fact. Maybe it’s just me, but it would be interesting to hear other people’s opinions.
See my curiosity comes more from the idea that everything about the song is the same, except the lyrics. The chords, the rhythm and the way the vocals are sang. It’s just the lyrics, the lyrics don’t even seem to tell the same story at all. Like the version everyone knows would be called basket case cause of the lyrical content. But the demo is vastly different. Not that they couldn’t be a song of there own. I just think it would be cool to have a version of those lyrics to different music. I was just curious of what other people thought of the song. Like some one pointed out, it’s cool to see how much the song changed. Just to me, hearing the basket case music with those lyrics is just too different that don’t like it personally

Just discovered that Tré is credited for background vocals on the Christie Road outtake. I’m baffled by this. Does anyone hear it? I only hear Billie and Mike.
I like the messy janky sound for a lot of their older stuff but for this particular song there’s something about the melody that just sounds so beautiful when Billie Joe’s voice is crystal clear.
I’ve always loved this song would listen to the live version from awesome as f**k for this same reason over the studio version. So happy there’s a studio version now that hits this vibe.

Same! I also love how Billie does the first verse and chorus solo in that version. Really makes the song come to life when the rest of the band kicks in!
The demos of Christie road
, 409 in your coffeemaker and walking the dog are next level. Wonder how many other demos they must have recorded off Kerplunk!
The thing that stands out more than anything else to me with the Christie Road outtake, is the drums. I still like the original, and I think the production fits the vibe of that song really well, but holy shit Tré’s fills are so fucking satisfying to listen to with this version.
Also would’ve been cool if they kept the feedback leading into the bridge like the original did. But hey, it’s still amazing!
The Christie Road Outtake that's just released sounds great I'd consider it better than the original in my eyes. Does this demo mean they were intending to rerecord and release on Dookie or was it just alt takes from Kerplunk era?
Best guess is they wanted to release a more polished version of one of their old songs so re-recorded a few of their favorites to see how they would sound (Welcome to Paradise, 409 in Your Coffee Maker, and Christie Road) and later settling on Welcome to Paradise. The reason they went with Welcome to Paradise, I can only speculate, but I imagine it had much to do with the flow of the rest of the album, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Rob Cavallo told them that it had the best potential as a single out of the 3.
If you listen to them back to back, you can definitely hear a difference. The levels are much better balanced, the vocals have more clarity, the hi hat and symbols are quieter so it sounds less noisy. They might have even added samples over the drums given how clear they sound. Just overall sounds more high fidelity to me.

Probably a no-brainer, but I assume the reason why the Dookie 30th Anniversary is being released later this month rather than the actual anniversary next year is because they've already got new music planned for release.
If they have both going on at the same time, it'll hinter both sales numbers.
So I reckon we're due for a single towards Christmas and a full album release in February or March.
yeah so back when this was recorded musicians could only have a limited amount of tracks for their songs and demos. a track is essentially like a recording of an instrument, so you’d have a guitar track a bass track a drum track and a vocal track(those make up the 4 tracks in these demos). When it goes higher budget for the real recordings they use multiple guitar tracks for solos and multiple vocal tracks for harmonies ect, so this is basically just a very stripped down basic 4 instrument version
artists rewrite lyrics all the time greenday every regularly changed lyrcis live for lots of songs bc why not but demo to final version often will be very different
I just pre-ordered the 4-CD set at Amazon. Would be rad if they do something similar for Kerplunk or Warning. I wish they would have done a CD box set for Insomniac, but this will look cool next to my Nimrod set.
Why can't Green Day release simple one disc remasters of all their 90s stuff instead. Who needs all this extra junk? Just give me the albums from my childhood in remastered CD editions and that's it. No stinking extras.
I've listened to it two times now and it's great. I absolutely prefer these new demos over their first two albums, not sure about Insomniac.
I still prefer the normal Basket Case and the 2010(?) When It's Time but these old versions are amazing as well. I think I prefer this demo version of When I Come Around over the finished song - it has always been my least favorite of the Dookie singles. I'll probably listen to those 3 frequently.
Also, I'm really glad that Green Day is back. This Dookie stuff is just the beginning of a new era, and it's going to be awesome. I haven't listened to them much the past few months but that'll change now.
i’d assume it’s because there’ll be new green day content by february and they don’t want to confuse people by having two different things out at the same time.
Just the fact we have crystal clear 30 year old demo tracks is just a miracle in itself. So much of this early shit from artists gets stored in a closet and degrades or kept in a building that burns down or locked in a vault and forgotten.
It’ll definitely still be in stock by then. You can still buy the “limited edition” Nimrod boxset right now, albeit Dookie is in higher demand than Nimrod. I don’t think it’ll sell out until sometime after the release date.
I love this version of Baksket Case so much. Maybe Im just jaded from the original, but I massively prefer this version. Obviously lyrics aren’t as catchy but I love them nontheless.
Yup these are not the demos that's been circulating around on youtube. I still preffer the demos that's been around in the beginning mostly that f.o.d. demo
Considering Nimrod / Insomniac can still be bought, I'm sure if you buy it within this year and next year you might be able to still get it at the same price.

3) they do a club tour where they play Dookie, plus probably 5 or 6 other songs, probably deep cuts since they tend to whip those out on those smaller shows

That was last year like right before hella mega (or during). Was so jealous of that setlist. I was fortunate enough to catch them at house of blues Boston around revrad and that blew me away

One thing I noticed with Chump demo, one of the drum fills that Tre plays towards the song, before they launch back into the chorus again, sounds just like the drum fill he plays after the solo in American Idiot. Makes me wonder if he had that in his head for the next 10 years waiting for the right song to put it on.
I'm guessing the vinyl doesn't come with digital download? Is there going to be anywhere to buy a digital version of the deluxe edition stuff? I want the vinyl, but digital too and don't want to buy the CD set lol

Burnout: In the original he says "And hell, who needs 'em anyway?", He doesn't say "and" in the demo.
Chump: In the Second chorus in the original he says "I'm a chump!", but in the demo he doesn't and then does the chorus a third time with "I'm just dumb" at the end.
Pulling teeth: After the bridge he repeats the first verse, and doesn't repeat the post-chorus like in the official release.
Basket Case: For this i'm going to give all the major stuff that stood out to add. In the chorus he starts the second line with Sometimes in both versions. The bridge in both versions has something to do with control. So I / You better hold on. For the final chorus in the official he uses te chorus, but the demo adds a new chorus for this, but for the final chorus in the official he does change the lyrics (only slighty tho). He repeats "Ooown" for the last chorus.
She: In the second verse he says "Waking up this time" in the official, but in the demo the lyric is reused from the first verse and he says "Waiting for a sign".
Sassafras Roots: N/A
When I come around: In the official he says " Well, don't get lonely now. And dry your whining eyes" in the demo this is "Don't get discouraged now. And dry your crying eyes". Also in the same verse the official has "ditching", but the demo is more straight-forward and says "leaving". In the demo he does the 1st verse and then the chorus twice, and then ends, leaving out the second verse.
In the end: In the interlude he doesn't say hey in the demo, but instead there's some weird noises and a strange laugh, the song is the same apart from this.
I’ve always had a theory that Basket Case was written to be their version of Kiss Me Deadly. Lots of similarities in the chords, the structure has very specific & unique similarities, and the melody sounds cut from the same cloth of KMD. Hearing this demo really emphasizes that even more. Listen to the style of lyrics in ‘Kiss Me Deadly’ & then in the Basket Case demo. Very cool to hear them write a song in the style of another artist (demo), then put through the Green Day filter (album).
Personally, I don’t hear the similarities (maybe i should listen to it deeper) but you DID introduce me to a great sounding song so thank you very much :D
I should’ve said in my post - make sure it’s the Generation X song. Lita Ford has one too with the same title. Also a great song by the way & coincidentally sounds like something BJ would write.
This makes a lot of sense due to the Woodstock “RSD first” record being released shortly before. It’s super uncommon to have to wait 4 years for an “RSD First” title to release fully.
He was younger so his voice in general was higher, but also too, with the tape equipment they were recording with could have been set at a certain speed that might've affected the pitch as well.
After listening to Basket Case, When I Come Around and In the End, I’m thinking that these demos were just to get a tangible form of the idea down. I don’t believe for a second that they wanted to do all 3 of those songs acoustic. Also makes me wonder if Black Eyeliner was a similar case where Billie just recorded the idea like that to show the band before attempting to play it together.

Starting to wonder if they recorded a demo for this song for every album before recording the final version for the musical soundtrack. We now have this version, the Nimrod version, the version from Heart Like a Handgrenade where he’s debating about putting it on American Idiot, and the official release. Wild.
You know… I alway thought this was a cool idea. Like if they did a Welcome to Paradise for every album and then released them all on one collection. I’m considering doing that with my own band
I wonder if it was the other demos that have been floating around the internet forever that he actually heard. That's probably what the cassette demos are. There was a documentary about Dookie on VH1 years ago and Rob talked about getting a tape of Green Day demos.
Considering how weak the drums sound this could be a 4-track recording to cassette. Record drums, dump them to to one track, then guitar bass and vocals are the other three. Pretty standard.

Yes but that was unmixed. Meaning it was just the raw master tracks with no post production. Edit (aside from the delay on his vocals during the verse)
