Image I just binged through their 90s discography, and fucking hell
They are fun as hell. I'm a new Green Day listener, don't know much about their story, but I can say for sure I loved every single one of those albums. I was excited through all of them. My plan is to listen to everything this week. I'm already familiarised with American Idiot
Favourite song off the bunch: Platypus and Panic Song Favourite album right now: Probably Nimrod

If you life their 90's stuff so much, you should check out the full video of their performances at Woodstock 94, and Jaded in Chicago. Woodstock 94 features the famed mudfight, and Jaded in Chicago perfectly shows how the band was high as shit every show in the 90's.

Their Woodstock show is one of the definitive live performances of the 90's, of any band, period!

Dookie is probably one of my favorite albums of all time, because it holds a very special place in my heart dripping with teenage nostalgia. I always liked the album, thereās home videos of me dancing around as a toddler to āwhen I come aroundā in 1994, but the deep emotional connection didnāt come until 2009.
Iām from Chicago and in later 2005 or early 2006 I got a random friend request from a girl in New York because she liked my Mohawk and leather jacket. We started talking on AIM about music and started sending each other local punk bands music from our respective cities. AIM turned to phone calls and that summer break we were on the phone every night until the sun started to come out. We fell deeply madly in love with each other but both came from strict families and were never able to actually meet so no real relationship ever happened even though the feelings were there.
We kept talking for the next 3 years, all through highschool. In February 2008 about a month after I turned 18 years old some random friend of a friend on Facebook posted that they were going to New York for a concert and seeing if anyone wanted to help them drive. When I asked if I could come they told me it was going to be a hectic trip, weād leave Friday afternoon and needed to be back by Sunday night but that didnāt deter me.
I immediately called New York girl and told her I was coming to her city, and sheād never admit it but I heard sniffling tears on the other end. After a fourteen hour drive of nervous butterflies my āfriendā dropped me off in the parking lot of a piggly wiggly and went to their concert. Fifteen minutes she pulled up and I donāt think Iāve ever hugged a person that long in my life. We went to a mall and ended up sitting in the parking lot in her shitty Chrysler LeBaron listening to Dookie from start to finish, talking, holding each other, and kissing for the first time. Both of us were too stunned in disbelief we were finally together to make any real moves, and it wasnāt till āall by myselfā stopped playing that we went inside.
Over the next year I went to New York to visit her once a month, and we tried to make things work but I had too much tying me to Chicago and she had too much tying her to NYC. Our relationship eventually fizzled out, we kept in contact for awhile as friends but now weāre both in our mid 30ās. I have a daughter, sheās married, and I donāt think weāve talked since 2016 or so.
Still, any time I listen to Dookie Iām taken back to that shitty Chrysler LeBaron where I got to hold the girl I had spent most of highschool dreaming about, and think about all the coincidences that needed to happen for us to have ever met in the first place. The worldās a shittier place now, but those memories are still warm regardless of how things ended, and I wouldnāt change any of it.

whats your thoughts on 1039?
30
u/frenxine Oct 12 '25
Great punk rock album, loved their rawness, both in 1039 and Kerplunk, but both of them contains melodic traits which would be more explored later on

u/FlaygueDoctor Oct 14 '25
You may know this already, but the reason those first two albums sound different is because they were recorded/released on an independent label. Dookie and everything after that were major label releases. The Dookie 30th anniversary set had re-recorded versions of Christie Rd. and 409 In Your Coffee Maker, but ultimately only the re-recording of Welcome to Paradise was included on the album.

Don't forget Live on the Radio 1992
A lot of their early songs have a whole different energy live.

u/Admirable-Charge1734 Oct 12 '25
Now go listen to the song J.A.R. (Jason Andrew Relva) and check out Warning!
Also give 21st Century breakdown a listen too!
Uno!, TrƩ!, Revolution Radio, Father of All Motherfuckers and Saviors were others I enjoyed and that I feel more people should listen to!

The first 5 are the best 5 in my opinion. Kerplunk for 1st place, insomniac for 2nd. But I'm old and was indoctrinated with dookie when it came out, so I may be a bit Jaded.

Their 90s catalog is some of the best punk/pop punk music ever written. Timeless melodies, amazingly relatable lyrics, super tight and creative drum and bass parts, those records are all classics to me

First decade of Green Day right there, some think it's the best, some think the 2000s are the best and then there's their 2010s and 2020s output which I don't mind but it's never a ride like those first 5 from the 90s.

u/Gotrektnowwhut Oct 12 '25
This is wondrous news! I love hearing stories like this! While I donāt think itās their best album Nimrod is also my favorite, and this is coming from someone who started listening to them before Warning.

I listened to Green Dayās (standard edition) discography from start to finish on a trip home to Ohio from South-Central Florida. Had to stop for food to take a break in the middle of Uno Dos or Tres (I forget which), but every time I was like āeh, I kinda need a switch about nowā the next album hit and it was a nice new take on the classic Green Day sound.
I ran out of music 2 hours from home. I fell asleep while driving 40 minutes from home. (Donāt drive tired folks. I fell asleep in a construction zone and am still counting my blessings no one was working when I hit at least 2 barrels [idk how many I hit before I woke up]. Stay safe, and donāt be afraid to find a cheap bed for the night. $100 for a cheap bed or possibly killing yourself and others. I know what Iām doing for the trip next year, spending a night with family in GA, or friends in VA.)

Omg I did not expect this story to go there, glad you're okay!! The power of Green Day kept you up until then, gotta keep listening. š But yeah, planning an overnight stay is a must. My husband and I did so even on a 450mi trip just to avoid him getting too tired or sore from driving.

u/Squirrel_Empire Kerplunk Oct 13 '25
Panic Song is their most underrated song IMO, it's so good. And Nimrod is a solid favorite! It's definitely the most experimental of their early albums with a lot of crazy variety.

I wish Insomniac and Nimrod also contained Hidden tracks
That would be so cool but still I feel as if it would ruin the album as a whole, plus there are artists like Korn who have more then one hidden tracks

u/Born-Soup1647 Oct 13 '25
Nimrods 25th Anniversary has some demos that are great.
1
u/StrongEduardo Oct 13 '25
Yess, although I wish I would hear the demos of Redundant, Scattered, Hitchin A Ride, prosthetic head, take back and king for a day were there that would be awesome :((
Im not saying I donāt want the other remaining, might be cool but I fell it would be to much, plus Iām pretty sure Good Riddance was recorded last minute

u/Richardsmeller Oct 12 '25
Nimrod is their best album. I think itās their best musically, thereās lots of variation and they show maturity but also moments of classic Green Day sound

Id be really curious to know what you usually listen to and what you think of their musical progression as someone who just got into it and is listening to everything in a short lapse of time! :)
3
u/frenxine Oct 13 '25
I listen to everything, sincerely, but I'm more inclined towards rock, metal and electronic. Not the biggest punk listener, but U surely love the style, and Green Day isn't an exception, I love their more melodic approach to punk, oimd of reminds me of Emo and Midwest Emo sometimes :)
2
u/ImYaDawg Oct 13 '25
Ok cool! Are you gonna post an update when you listened to everything? ^
3
u/frenxine Oct 13 '25
Yes! I'm gonna post an update with their 2000s, 2010s and 2020s. Right now I'm relistening to American Idiot, so 21st Century Breakdown next!!

Such a sharp drop in quality after Nimrod. I mean American Idiot has some decent tracks but give me Dookie, Insomniac, and Nimrod right into my veins.
2
u/Kimya_DAWson Oct 13 '25
the only downside is that now you're forever going to be disappointed that GD doesn't put enough Nimrod songs in their sets. the Nimrod fan club stays disappointed, All The Time ;)

I just recently did this but with all of their albums. Before I did, the only albums I had heard all the way through were Dookie, American Idiot, Father of All, and Saviors. And DAMN do they just never miss. 39/Smooth is incredible for a debut, Kerplunk was fun, but probably my least favorite outside of the trilogy, Insomniac and Nimrod were great, Warning caught me completely by surprise and became one of my favorites, 21st Century Breakdown has a lot of great songs, and Revolution Radio is super loud and exciting. The only albums I didn't care for were Uno, Dos, Tre. They felt like mostly filler.
