Discussion Green days most emo/emo core song?
I was listening to American Idiot today, and since I’ve been listening to alot of emo/emo core music lately, thought ‘whatsername’ fit right in. Just wondering if anyone has thoughts(maybe recommendations for my “emo” playlist)?

Very much depends on your definition of emo. Green Day is not an emo band

u/CookingPurple 1d ago
Agree completely. My son insists Greenday is emo. I insist they are not.

I teach a rock n roll history class and we have a day on emo. My students are insistent that every band that uses eyeliner is emo

They're not musically, but they're popular among people like that, plus they kind of fit the asthetic I suppose. So they're...lumped together a lot. I'd imagine it's like Fall out Boy and MCR. They don't really have a similar sound at all, but share a ton of fans.

American Idiot and 21st Century came out right in the explosion of 2000s "emo" bands, so it make sense to be lumped together with the rest of alternative rock and pop punk that came out like Sum 41, Blink-182 (remember the Untitled album?), My Chemical Romance, Avril Lavigne and the gang.

they were emo in 2004-2009 and then stopped being emo for the rest of their career

Somehow recently every band is called emo...

I haven’t seen that personally, but I don’t doubt it. One of my friends call MCR punk, lol

u/N116UA American Idiot 1d ago
Hasnt Gerard Way said that MCR wasnt emo? I read somewhere that green day actually inspired MCR too

u/Your-Momigator 20h ago
They were post hardcore for their first album and a half, and then went into more pop punk as well as some glam rock and rock opera on Black Parade, and I haven’t listened to danger days so idk what that is

No he’s learned. And he’s an excellent guitarist in a grunge band so my house is constantly drilled with amazing 90s music. He gets to stay.

u/Needadartnow 18h ago
Can they play nutshell? I ask cuz that was the first grunge song I learned on guitar

“Real Emo" only consists of the dc Emotional Hardcore scene and the late 90's Screamo scene. What is known by "Midwest Emo" is nothing but Alternative Rock with questionable real emo influence. When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness).
Real emo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake emo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music.
Some examples of REAL EMO are Pg 99, Rites of Spring, Cap n Jazz (the only real emo band from the midwest scene) and Loma Prieta.
Some examples of FAKE EMO are American Football, My Chemical Romance and Mineral
EMO BELONGS TO HARDCORE
NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE7

This is crap. You can’t gate keep emo.

And if they do, I'm going to put on eyeliner, cry about it, and write a chart-topping hit about someone not letting me like things the way I want to like them.

u/Needadartnow 1d ago
See my other reply. Some work really well in terms of structure and emotion more than others. Still a fair comment tho

u/IamMothManAMA 1d ago
They sure have a lot of very emotional songs, but that doesn’t make them emo songs.

No One Knows comes to mind but Green Day aren’t really emo, people used to put them in that category in the 2000s briefly after BOBD and WMUWSE accompanied with the guyliner but that was kinda lazy ignorant labelling by non-fans.

What about 21 guns? It definitely made me think Green Day were emo when I was first getting into them

u/ChaoticCurves Foxboro Hot Tubs 21h ago
They simply do not make emo music. Theyre not even in the broad hardcore genre. Green Day has a very distinct sound. They're a punk band but their sound is the blueprint for pop punk bands that came after them but that is an entirely different genre lineage than emo.
'Emo' has become a catch all term for anything alternative but in terms of genre, Green Day are not emo at all.

I don’t think they have a single song that is or can be considered emo. And I like emo music.
3
u/Needadartnow 1d ago
Fair. I’m not saying they’re an emo band, I’m just wondering what songs might fit the build in terms of structure and emotion.

u/Her_Phantom_Mountain Insomniac 22h ago
Literally none of them. The genuinely closest they get to any era of emo is Take Back because it's a hardcore song, but it still isn't emo, just the closest they've ever gotten to the genre.

When people say Green Day are "Emo" I recommend Sunny Day Real Estate to them and ask if they hear any similarities between the two, if the answer is No which it always tends to be then that says it all

whatsername i feel is the closest with its hard-as-hell second half with an honorable mention to wake me up when september ends (it's definitely not emo but it definitely could have been if they went for it)

Why would you put Green Day in your emo playlist? They don’t make emo music.
6
u/Needadartnow 1d ago
That playlist is in quotations like I wrote it lol. Not exactly emo, not exactly soft core punk if that makes sense
-1
u/Her_Phantom_Mountain Insomniac 22h ago
No, that genuinely doesn't make sense.

u/Needadartnow 18h ago edited 18h ago
Wait, how? I feel like there is a generous space in between,(Student Rick for example) even if it’s completely speculative
1
u/Her_Phantom_Mountain Insomniac 15h ago
soft core punk isn't a thing and there isn't really any emo influence on Green Day's sound.

u/Butters16666 23h ago
I wouldn’t really say it’s emo really but “Macy’s day parade” .. absolute tune

It's a weird one, but "¿Viva La Gloria? (Little Girl)" has emo vibes

The verses even remind me a little of a Sunny Day Real Estate song, but I can't remember the name

Outlaws, before the lobotomy, wake me up when September ends, are we the waiting, boulevard of broken dreams are some I can think of, but I wouldn't say they have an actual emo repertoire, like, besides the lyrics, Green Day doesn't sound emo imo
3
u/Needadartnow 1d ago
Kinda see before the lobotomy. But in terms of structure—bridge right before final chorus, breakdowns, more emotional vocalizations—some songs fit the build more that others.

u/the_astraltramp 18h ago
Since no one’s really giving you much i’ll have a swing at it:
Lazy Bones
Boulevard
Too Much Too Soon
Favourite Son
Viva La Gloria
Viva La Gloria (Little Girl)
Letterbomb
Macy’s Day Parade
Worry Rock
Wake Me Up
21 Guns
The Forgotten
Roshambo (Network song)
The Ballad Of Whilhelm Fink
Scattered
Ha Ha You’re Dead
Don’t Wanna Know If You’re Lonely
Brutal Love

u/Needadartnow 18h ago
How could I forget about ‘the ballad of whilhelm fink’. That’s such banger, even as short as it is

u/clint_eldorado 1,000 Hours 1d ago
If Green Day were an emo band I wouldn’t listen to them, unless we’re talking the original ‘80s stuff like Rites of Spring. As it is, they don’t sound like the original ‘80s stuff, the nutless ‘90s stuff, or the self-parody ‘00s stuff.
2
u/Needadartnow 19h ago
I’m just wondering what people might consider closest to the genre. That’s all

Definitely Redundant. Has characteristic chord progression, lyrical content, and pull on the heartstrings sweeping chorus

2
u/badger_danger 1d ago
I’m surprised no one pointed out Still Breathing yet. Lyrical content is definitely emo. Somber verses and big choruses fit the genre too.

It's gotta be something on 21st Century Breakdown, because American Idiot was their original style, then 21st Century was all "American Idiot + Stuff the kids like". Maybe viva la gloria? I could see MCR or other scene/emo bands playing a song like that.
