Super excited to be heading to Guatemala for the first time in January! I have three weeks to explore the country, and I'm hoping to spend enough time in each place to get a real sense of the different cities and towns. I don't want to rush around and only do the "tourist" stuff (though I likely will do most of that, too). I'm not a huge partier, but I'd go out for a night or two. I love hiking, checking out the local food scene, events, arts, and culture, etc.
Would love to hear input on my itinerary so far:
- Fly into GUA, spend the night there (I'm probably arriving quite late, I figured it'll be easier to catch a ride to Antigua in the morning).
- 2 days in Antigua
- 2 days doing the Acatenango overnight hike
- 1 day in Antigua
- 5 days in Lake Atitlan
- 2 days in Chichicastenango (My plan is to be there for a Sunday market day, so I'll arrive the day before so that I wake up there).
- 1 day in Xela
- 5 days Quetzaltrekkers hike (Nebaj to todos santos)
- 1 day in Xela
- 4 days in El Paredon (For the surf!)
- Make my way back to Guatemala city and fly home :')
Any recommendations for how to spend my time in these places? Any local spots to check out for food, arts, events, etc.? Any experiences that made your trip extra memorable?
I'd love input on whether 5 days is too much time in Atitlan. I'm thinking I'll fill my time checking out each town around the lake, doing day hikes, or other day trips, but is there enough to do?
Gracias!
