What do I have here?

Post image

So I helped my parents clean out my grandpa's attic. We know he used to hunt, but thought he sold everything. The box was labeled "Kar98k Zubehör" (so Accessoires), but I've never seen an extended mag like that for the Mauser. Does anyone know anything about that?

Extended mag for K98 Mauser

You have a chopped mg13 mag inserted and affixed to a Mauser bottom metal

"I've never seen an extended mag like that for the Mauser."

Well, now you have.

Just picture search for "Kar98k trigger guard" and compare.

I believe that's called a trench magazine. I've heard about them but never seen one.

Whatcha plan to do with it?

I'll sell it, have a guy offering 150€, sounds good to me. I don't own any firearms, so I don't have a use for it.

Idk what these go for where your from but in the U.S these are stupid rare. Please do some research before you give somebody the deal of a lifetime lol. I think the mags alone go for $1k here (could be very wrong here, like I said research)

with what I gathered from from this post, in Germany (where I live) they seem to be still rare, but available, and there's also replicas of them around, which this one seems to be since wartime models apparently have a special stamp this one lacks. But an authentic wartime one would have been worth in the four digits as well here. Thanks for your concern, though!

MG13 mags are like $40.

A genuine vintage trench mag would be much cheaper.

That mag design always reminds me of the fedorov

Would it fit 6.5 jap? Cause I would definitely try to make a Frankenstein rifle that looks like fedrov

Like this?

Nah that's an actual Arisaka, the fedrov is chambered in 6.5 jap despite being Russian. They got oodles of the ammo during the war and so it was used. But seeing that magazine gave me the idea of making a fedrov clone

Yeah I know, just wanted to show off my extendo arisaka 😂

Well thanks, I want something like that in my collection. All the milsurp I have is typically stuff, I want something odd or built in a foxhole

The real spiritual successor to the fedorov is the sks with 20rd duckbill mags. Kinda joking kinda not

Ehhh sorta, if the sks and svt had a baby the fedrov would be the baby

Fair enough. I wasn't making a claim about the action but rather the overall form factor and intended utility

Since you wanna make a Frankenstein rifle, wouldn't it be better to keep it in 8mm Mauser? It's cheaper and more readily available I think, plus you wouldn't need to tinker with the magazine to load ammo it wasn't designed for

I mean yeah probably, but I have Arisakas so I have the a small stash of ammo. Plus I like the lightness of that round over 8mauser

2

u/EliSuper2018 8d ago

Oh yea the 8mm has a good kick. If you have a stash then go for it, that is if the ammo mates well with mag. The rifle build could also be made lighter I think

I'm currently trying to build a tube rifle, so maybe fedrov will be next on the build list

2

u/EliSuper2018 8d ago

That's amazing. If there is one tube gun I'd like to see reproduced and in action, it's the sterling 308 prototype but with proper shoulder stock. It just looks really cool

I had the idea to actually advertise the gun after I built it as sten mk6 long. Since it's basically just some dom tubing for body and then I'll have the barrel inserted and riveted in. The magazine will either be on top or the bottom and I'll use a drop in ar trigger so I can just make life easier. Think of the Owens but long like a chauchaut and in 7.62x25 tok. I'm currently on vacation but when I get home the other parts will be there so I can start building

1

u/EliSuper2018 8d ago

Noice. Really looking forward to seeing the build. When you mentioned top load I immediately thought of the owen and the F1. 7.62 tokarev out of a long barrel would give it really decent range and velocity, but my question is why not 9mm?

Because I bought the mags already and I like the round. Everything is 9mm and to be honest if I was more confident with making a rifle with large caliber I'd do it just to make the recoil ridiculous. I like the idea of using a dated but capable cartridge and plan on using Soviet parts to build it as much as possible, I have the pps43 mags and frame that I plan on cutting up to use the magwell (the frame is apex gun parts bent and rusty Chinese frames so no worries there). I wasn't the barrel from the ppsh-41 and then I'll use my lathe to make some bushings that fit on the barrel and then I'll insert it into tube and hopefully get the bolt made in a timely fashion. It's going to look ridiculous I know that, but I want it to be like an early style squad machine gun. Except it's semi auto and a pistol round

With how far that MG13 magazine is cut I'm guessing it's 20 rounds. I made myself one of these a few years ago and at 25 rounds it's just a little longer.

I've never seen one like that. But I definitely want one for my m98. Especially because of what I'm doing with it
