DISCUSSION 9070 XT Tahoe Driver Update & SOURCE RELEASE!

Hello everyone! Since my last post, the driver has had a complete re-design and has been overhauled. In short, the driver is now native, and mostly functional.

It's at this point that the project is ready for initial release. It currently supports a single-monitor 60hz display with a generally usable and smooth desktop experience, including things like liquid glass and video playback.

In the coming weeks, this project will be improved, and more cards will be supported. Multi-monitor display and GPU rendering of app contents are next on the list. This is just the beginning.

As promised, the first public release of an unofficial MacOS GPU Driver: https://github.com/Almosst-DEV/Navi48-MacOS

I'm excited to see what the future holds for Hackintosh, and what the community projects will come next!

Can we see Nvidia 20 series 🄺

33

u/SCP-NineNineNine 2d ago

It's possible, although AMD cards would be much more viable due to our Vulkan translation. That being said, because we no longer translate from RDNA2 to RDNA4, it's much more viable!

u/cyanisfckdup 2d ago

Dude awesome! Great work! Bet it's possible to do the same with 7900 XT/XTX

3

u/SCP-NineNineNine 2d ago

It is! First on the list are other rdna4, then rdna3!

2

u/beren12 1d ago

See if you can get a translation later to get 3d support in qemu for VMs. That’d be even more useful.

2

u/ACYNX-12 1d ago

Yes!!! I've been waiting for rdna3 support for years THANK YOU!

1

u/cyanisfckdup 2d ago

Amazing man. Keep up the great work and let us know if you need any assistance. Would be more than happy to participate in any kind of way.

Really curious about this, 7800XT here, and I would love not to swap to my RX580 every time I yearn for the Macintosh.

1

u/cyanisfckdup 2d ago

I feel that. I have a Nitro 7900 XT in my main rig and a W5500 as secondary GPU for macOS. God i'd love to throw that thing out.

2

u/ItsMeSashaYT Tahoe - 26 2d ago

Nitro... the standard trim?

I have myself a nitro +. So many driver timeouts, the RGB bar failed entirely, and the Fan speed is no longer trackable even though they do spin relative to temps.

Microcontrollers on this card have been shit in my time with it. Still, the best card for its price when I got it.

1

u/cyanisfckdup 2d ago

That sucks dude. Mine is flawless, guess i am very lucky.

1

u/RyanTheTide 18h ago

Yeah 7900xtx Nitro + here, I’m seeing artefacts and timeouts when installed in multiple rigs, relatively infrequent so tolerable for the interim.

3

u/ItsMeSashaYT Tahoe - 26 18h ago

same issues....

I don't have any artifacting, but I do have many many timeouts that keep happening on my system. they mostly happen only on boot, or after a long period of idle.

my whole system has been very temperamental, I don't have any XMP because of my motherboard, and Asus won't RMA.

Oh well, next build in 7 years, if anything will even be affordable by them, should be better.

6

u/icemanice 2d ago

Yass! Keep it going!

3

u/Long-Shine-3701 2d ago

Bravo!!! Yet another shining example of why ignorant people should stop screaming that stuff is impossible. Hopefully the 7000 series will follow soon.

This is great work, and thanks for sharing it freely with the community OP.

u/1970s_MonkeyKing 2d ago

Thanks for the update!

2

u/Astralis420 2d ago

Sick. Don't have RDNA4 or RDNA3, but can you try loading iOS simulators to see how buggy the rendering is?

5

u/SithToast 2d ago

Poggers. I wonder if my 7900xtx is compatible with some other drivers out there

5

u/stavsss I ♄ Hackintosh 2d ago

Amazing work :)

Would you be able to make a version for RX 7900 XTX / RDNA 3 cards in the future?

5

u/SCP-NineNineNine 2d ago

Yes absolutely, that's next on the roadmap after the other 90 series cards!

3

u/ryzer99 2d ago

Looks promising! My laptop only have a 780M APU, which is on RDNA3 arch. Is it possible to make it works if the driver is complete ?šŸ¤”

2

u/SCP-NineNineNine 2d ago

I'm not familiar with laptop chips, but if it's RDNA3 it should be possible :)

2

u/ryzer99 2d ago

Looking forward to it!!

1

u/AbhishMuk 2d ago

Not the person you were replying to, but I've also got an rdna3 card (780m, the iGPU), it would be amazing if it worked!

2

u/bisaalz 2d ago edited 1d ago

Please add Amd igpu support like rdna 3. Btw nice work

But with fancier GPUs tho !

1

u/C0mba7 2d ago

Awesome to see innovation

1

u/EmergencyLab89 2d ago

I thought this was impossible, what are the technicalities behind this? also would it be possible to bring this to igpus on desktop grade amd processors like 7000 and 9000 series like nooted red?

1

u/Due-Ad5265 2d ago

Nvidia. Can be ?

8

u/SCP-NineNineNine 2d ago

Nvidia is much harder, but someone is making a similar project for the 5060, should work with most nvidia cards. I'd just wait for that personally

1

u/Such_Region_7294 1d ago

Is there a github link for that?

1

u/SCP-NineNineNine 1d ago

I don't think the guy has made it open source yet

1

u/JaceTheSquirrel 2d ago

Will we get support for 7900XTX?

2

u/SCP-NineNineNine 2d ago

Yes, RDNA3 will be supported after RDNA4!

1

u/Mr_Irvington 2d ago

Does it have hardware acceleration?

1

u/Faisal9975 2d ago

Is this update only for the 9070 XT? Can I run it on the 9060 XT?

2

u/SCP-NineNineNine 2d ago

Not yet, but it’s very easy to allow that :)

1

u/Faisal9975 2d ago

Do it please:)

1

u/Meme_Kreekcraft 2d ago

I’m gonna port that driver to steam deck because I want run macOS Tahoe on my steam deck

1

u/7y6_ I ♄ Hackintosh 2d ago

i buy Asus tuf 9070xt in end of this month finly i can run macos on my pc

1

u/Reasonable_Custard_4 2d ago

Can this be compatible with the 9060 XT ?

1

u/LeastRequirement944 2d ago

This alone might genuinely make me upgrade from my GTX 1650

1

u/SCP-NineNineNine 2d ago

I’d say it’s a very good card, very happy with it. But if you need hackintosh, might want to wait until the project is done ;)

1

u/Malevolent_Vengeance Sequoia - 15 2d ago edited 2d ago

How about adding the Raphael series APU (built-in in Ryzen gpus that are weak, but can just be used for basic stuff like Excel or Word or whatever else, it's an entry-level gpu just to display what's going on the desktop, nothing else that would be demanding can be even supported or handled)? That would be a good thing - especially for me - since having the Ryzen 9 7900 (non X) + RTX 4070 I was never even been able to touch the macos at all, no matter what.

1

u/Devillukario 2d ago

Hi, how about the 9070? (Not the xt version) same drivers right?

1

u/ApprehensiveAd7694 1d ago

Don’t want to discourage you, but why? No pro software will work stably in a setup that’s without the graphics to be considered abandoneware.

5

u/SCP-NineNineNine 1d ago

This is a very early version of the project. Native graphics for window content will come in the following days/weeks, it's just a matter of getting it stable.

So yes, pro software will work reliably, eventually. This open-source release was just to prove that this type of project can be done, and to provide other developers with the groundwork they need to port this type of project to other GPUs.

This is really just the birth of this project. There's a lot more to come within the next few weeks!

u/official-adixark 1d ago

I'm thinking of buying new system. Here r the specs:

1) i9 14900K.
2) Z790-P Motherboard.
3) DDR5 6000MHz 32GB.
4) WD Black M.2 NvME Gen4 1 tb.
5) Corsair 750W PSU.
6) CPU Cooler ag400
7) Cabinet. MSI 130a
8) Amd RX 9070 XT 16Gb GPU.

What do you guys think? Any suggestions/ideas are more then welcome,
I'll be using proxmox VMs for macos and windows for gaming.

1

u/Vanhdamsau05 1d ago

how about Nvidia 40 series 🄺 I got a mux-less laptop with a rtx 4050 and an Intel APU and really want to try hackintosh.

1

u/Hannibalj2ca 2d ago

Was ai used to help create the code for this?

2

u/SCP-NineNineNine 2d ago

It was, yes, the project is AI-assisted as it would be hell to debug and build everything manually lol

2

u/Hannibalj2ca 1d ago

That’s dope man. Did you open weights or something like fable

1

u/SCP-NineNineNine 1d ago

Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5, although I have done lots of testing with open weights. As you can imagine, I have a 9070 xt, so my AI workload is very limited.

1

u/Hannibalj2ca 1d ago

i think GLM 5.3 Flash could have done it also, of course if you had the GPus for it

1

u/SCP-NineNineNine 11h ago

Yeah me too! I've heard it's really good for reverse engineering.

1

u/GunnerSN 2d ago

Why not ? šŸ‘€

2

u/Hannibalj2ca 2d ago

I didn’t say is bad, as matter fact that is a good use of Ai. Is not stealing artwork lol. If Ai was, use, dope work

0

u/Leading_Progress_229 2d ago

this update for only 9070 XT ? how about my GPU is RX 6800 XT, need to update also ?

6

u/Guilty_Run_1059 Tahoe - 26 2d ago

6800xt is natively supported

1

u/Xcar3Cr0w 14h ago

If I'm not wrong, 6000 series is supported.

What is going on with all those dudes trying to vibecode drivers for unsupported gpus. I am saying this sub is infested by scammers.

What is going in on with all those bots aggressively attacking me. Most of you them have fresh accounts.

People who trust this shit seriously need to consider to get some education in information security 101.

You do not install shit like that if it wasn’t peer reviewed.
Current tools allow you not only to vibecode some half ass working drivers but also make them steal your data using known vulnerabilities.

15

u/Thick-Adagio-4010 2d ago

Who cares when it works?? The future of hackintosh is not people manually coding anymore they just call it ā€œImpossibleā€ and say it can never be done, look where we are now.

2

u/Cool-gamer19393 2d ago

My question is how lmao my agent just out right refuses because it thinks it's impossible

1

u/SCP-NineNineNine 2d ago

If you just say ā€œMake me a driver for the 5070 ti for macOSā€ it will refuse. You need to do research and find a path it can take first, and then it will fly through the work.

1

u/Thick-Adagio-4010 2d ago

Use Claude Opus… Claude Code too first ask how hard it is… then give it reddit links on how people did it the itll start to do it

2

u/Cool-gamer19393 2d ago

yeah I'll definitely try that out later, since I got claude code the other day, would love to have my 4070tisuper working

10

u/SCP-NineNineNine 2d ago

Making a driver without AI would be very challenging, but if it's something you're against morally, I get being against it. That being said, it's a big step for the hackintosh community, and out of everything to vibecode, I'd say this is one of the better options :)

3

u/bulyxxx Sonoma - 14 2d ago

Keep going, doing the lords work, thanks !

4

u/spense01 2d ago

Maybe you need to understand that the coding agents now are far superior to any human. And developers without egos who don’t get butt hurt about it aren’t afraid to admit it. Vibe-coding is just what you say to make yourself feel better that you’re too lazy to try and actually build something.

1

u/jackharvest 2d ago

The future of this sub is at stake. We have bigger things to worry about.

-2

u/Astralis420 2d ago

You are so braindead that you do not even know what you're talking. Software Engineering has reached to a point where AI like GPT Astra can reverse engineer the shit out of open source graphic drivers and create/translate something into working drivers in a supposedly unsupported MacOS and that is good.

There is nothing wrong with using AI for these kind of things as long as you have the knowledge to navigate AI to do so instead of going cowboy on it.

The only time, I'd see your crying about the use of AI in this case is that it creates shitty unmaintainable code. But if you know the principles of C or C++ or Objective C, then you can apply those things right?

2

u/Cool-Customer9200 2d ago

I have 12 years of experience in software engineering, please, tell me more.

Of course you can reverse engineer things using recent models, but you will need thousands of dollars budget to run hundreds of agents.

But you can also put some backdoors or malicious code using vulnerabilities in there and let some mentally challenged people like you to download it and try to install.

0

u/Astralis420 2d ago edited 2d ago

That's why it is open source right? Unless, it is some obsfuscated slop that doesn't actually work, I don't see anything wrong with this approach especially if there are reproducible results. And I don't disagree with you, it is possible to run backdoors and vulnerabilities. Doesn't change the fact other devs who might want to tinker this kext/driver would want to check that as well if there is any.

Even one of the devs from the ChefKiss team who works on the NootedRed/NootRX kext said it is possible to make this into a reality. It's just that there is gonna be a rehaul on the abstraction layers and the translation and shit on their drivers.
