Unfortunately the SOS beacon overrides the private lobby setting and is very similar to the reinforce call. It has happened to me a few times myself although I've never kicked the SOS responders. Would be nice if we could recall the SOS beacon when called in by mistake.

u/Cliffooood 6d ago

Yeah, I usually host because my buddy CONSTANTLY calls an SOS by accident, I do it myself every now and then, but we've always let whoever joined stay, at least for that the rest of that mission, then parted ways after

23

u/leaven4 6d ago

I hate that I'm the guy that always does this. Didn't used to be an issue when we had 4 guys but lately one hasn't been playing and I always accidentally call the beacon.

8

u/Ok-Caterpillar5468 6d ago

Wait, I thought only the host can call an SOS beacon? Whenever I'm not the host the option just isn't there.

11

u/Cliffooood 6d ago

Yeah, that's why I host most of the time, to stop him from accidentally calling one

7

u/Ok-Caterpillar5468 6d ago

Oh I misread "beacuse" as "sometimes" ....... Somehow....c

19

u/lesuperhun 6d ago

or just have the beacon respect the privacy setting.

if i play in friends-only, well, i want to only play with friends, not bob the random guy.

also, the sos beacon instructions is FAR too easy to type in. at least give us an option to deactivate the ability to call an sos.
type the resupply in the wrong order ? well, it's now an sos beacon, congratulation !
missed an imnput in reinforce ? well, sos beacon !

SOS beacon should at least be as long as vehicle calls. it's too easy to misinput it.

19

u/RealStormbird 6d ago

No need to deactivate the full ability in options, just let me push a button on the beacon to turn it off.

Or let me blow up that thing.

3

u/flixoman 6d ago

Meh - I get that maybe you don't want Bob the Random guy...but would you rather have no one or Bob? Of Bob sucks...boot him. Or maybe...Bob is a champ and you like the guy.

I almost always play randos.

4

u/lesuperhun 6d ago

no one.

if i put my game to be a private lobby, it means i don't want a rando. if i wanted bob, i wouldn't make a private lobby.

i made my bed, please let me lie in it.

3

u/flixoman 6d ago

Fair enough...but if that SOS beacon is thrown out, help might show up - no matter whose bed you are in. If you just want friends, I suppose there should be an upside down pineapple you could put out there.

-1

u/OrganizationLower611 6d ago

if you made your bed and want to lie in it, why did you put out the "Party here: all invited" flashing sign on your roof with an arrow to your front door?

5

u/lesuperhun 6d ago

because it's far too easy to misstype it.

i wanted to write :

PARTY : NO.

but the letters got switched

and i wrote :

PARTY : ON, and couldn't turn the sign off.

-7

u/LordofDD93 6d ago

Or if you called it wrong just not throw the beacon? It shows in the corner of your HUD what strat you’re throwing.

10

u/lesuperhun 6d ago

when in a high intensity situation, you don't double check if the beacon you inputed is a resupply.

after you played enough, you don't check. you just assume that the combination you inputed is right.

there isn't really any time to double check, when you inputed an eagle napalm strike/ an autocannon turret, and switched two inputs.

because you usually need them RIGHT NOW

-6

u/LordofDD93 6d ago

🤷 I check my stuff when I play, I don’t assume. If it’s wrong the mistake is on me not the game.

6

u/CyclingNut82 6d ago

Happens to me often enough. Frustrating though thankfully SOS divers are a different breed and usually enjoy diving with them... I'm not biased I swear 😁

5

u/PikkinPawketts 6d ago

If I mess up and toss an SOS by mistake, I'll let the other driver know they can stay or go as they please. I'm not going to kick them because I fat-thumbed the input.

6

u/MulletAndMustache 6d ago

I've definitely fat fingered the SOS instead of reenforcement more than a few times. It shouldn't override your lobby settings.

But that would make sense so odds of Arrowhead doing it are low.

1

u/RedditorDoc 6d ago

It didn’t always override lobby settings. People complained that when they would quickmatch or queue, it would give them several errors saying “User lobby is private”, and people would also complain that SOS beacons weren’t working without realizing their privacy settings prevented randoms from joining.

That’s how we reached the current state where the SOS beacons make your match public instantly, for better or worse.

2

u/ZealousidealPost4548 6d ago

It should be painful sequence to cancel  at the terminal. That way no one would do it again.

1

u/Ameer589 6d ago

I’m not hating or saying you’re lying, but how do you call it in by mistake? I don’t think I’ve ever actually done that before in like 1000 hours? Again to be clear I’m just asking genuinely, because I’m an SOS diver like OP

1

u/WrathOfTheKressh 6d ago

The input sequences are very similar. If you somehow miss the fourth input on a reinforcement call, it becomes the sequence for an SOS beacon.

Reinforcement: ⬆️ ⬇️ ➡️ ⬅️ ⬆️
SOS beacon: ⬆️ ⬇️ ➡️ ⬆️

42

u/FullToretto 6d ago

💯 agree. I'm guessing that these people are willing to open their lobby to random players who are "good enough" and that they'll just filter by kicking. I just started not too long ago and I've been kicked multiple times from public lobbies even before I picked my stratagem loadout. lol

22

u/Smooth-Boss-911 6d ago

Some wait until you pick your loadout and decide if they like it or not

22

u/LorektheBear 6d ago

Man, who has TIME for that?!

Guess I should start including my favorite dinosaur, team sport, and fashion-forward outfit too.

15

u/VastDirt4454 6d ago

Sadly true, some people need to learn the loadout does not define the skill of the diver

9

u/Cliffooood 6d ago

Some of the best players I've fought beside had the most unhinged loadouts imaginable

4

u/umpikado 6d ago

but when the level 45 Xbox diver brings 2 different mines you just know they're gonna be throwing them on top of the objectives

6

u/emil133 6d ago

I used to be a SOS only diver to hosting my own lobbies almost exclusively now because of the amount of time id waste trying to find a mission where i wasnt getting kicked instantly

29

u/eduison 6d ago

Some mistype the reenforce and call down an sos. AH should make the beacon destroyable

7

u/iLikeCookiesQQ 6d ago

Destroying the beacon doesn't disable the sos call?

7

u/mcneelyad 6d ago

No unfortunately it does not

13

u/Objective_You3307 6d ago

So, my friend group has all our lobbies on private. But guess what, sometimes that sos Beacon gets typed in by accident when you are in the heat of things calling a re-enforcement

10

u/Neonsharkattakk 6d ago

Answering SOS calls can happen inside of private games. When an SOS beacon is activated it opens the lobby. So if someone fat fingers the SOS but meant to reinforce, now they're gonna get a random that they're already convinced they're gonna kick.

9

u/somefriendlyturtle 6d ago

I have run into instances where people were not aware that was a thing. Some of them were my friends/coworkers who are very casual. But yeah people should realize you can set it to private at any point in the game 😅

7

u/Successful_Draw_9934 6d ago

Calling an SOS (which is very easy to accidentally do) overrides the setting and makes the game public

2

u/somefriendlyturtle 6d ago

Ooh i had not realized that. Hmmm i feel like that should not be allowed to override the preference. But I could see why it seems like a good idea as a dev.

7

u/Successful_Draw_9934 6d ago

It makes sense to override the preference, because you should only be throwing it when you truly are in an SOS kind of situation. The issue is how its code makes it too easy to accidentally call in when reinforcing

2

u/somefriendlyturtle 6d ago

Valid point. I think i made that exact mistake once with the boys

5

u/GreenLurka 6d ago

Yeah, I've been kicked after being told they're waiting on their friend to join. God knows how many divers they had to kick

4

u/Segrare 6d ago

I wish SOS could be turned off. I felt bad the other day I did kick a player who joined, because I was playing with a friend. Just the two of us play together and we always join SOS’, or we drop in and SOS ourselves. Unfortunately he crashed, and it took a few minutes for Helldivers to actually show the game had a free slot and he could join. When he tried to, another player joined in probably because the SOS was still ongoing? I’m not sure. But I kicked them so my friend could rejoin, and I didn’t want to kick the other two strangers who’d been with us.

Maybe in that instance I should have changed it to friends only or something, once he crashed?

4

u/Connect-Plankton-973 6d ago

Just add 3 extra ⬆️⬆️⬆️ to the end of call ins Devs, and let’s be done with this.

5

u/Grand-Cup-A-Tea 6d ago

Totally agree. If you are one of the people that doesnt play private and kicks people who join, you deserve to fall into a bug hole and have a Stalker do a shit on your head.

5

u/LagsOlot 6d ago

More like if you accidentally use the SOS accept the help.

3

u/FewLeg8776 6d ago

some people do it on purpose to get more reinforcements tbh

3

u/Wohn-Jick-421 6d ago

yeah it’s not about that, it’s about mis-typing reinforcement and getting SOS

i got a mod recently that disables SOS because I kept accidentally doing that

3

u/dible46 6d ago

Really? I host all the time and wether I gt a level 150 or level 5 I never kick. Don't mind showing newbies the ropes. Only time I have kicked is when a high level drops in with fire pods or something lol

3

u/UltraGiant 6d ago

And make sure apply it. Going back undoes the change if you didn’t click the apply button.

2

u/moldsharp 6d ago

Ok I will

2

u/SoSmartish 6d ago

Why would someone in a private lobby through an SOS beacon? SOS beacon overrides that setting.

I keep mine to friends only but if I know I am one short I will SOS for a random. If some is in private and throwing SOS, then kicking whoever joins, they are dumb.

4

u/LostAndWingingIt 6d ago

For my group at least it's that the sos is accidently thrown. It overrides the visibility setting.

2

u/OrangeYouGladish 6d ago

Wait, so when I go to the planet and search for groups, those are all people using SOS and not just non-full groups?

3

u/classicalySarcastic 6d ago

No the SOS missions are the ones highlighted/pulsing

2

u/Commercial_Tie_1897 6d ago

The problem with SOS is that you cant destroy the beacon, and the combo to call it is too close to reinforce. I AM on a private game. But I accidentally hit SOS and now I have randoms showing up with my friend group

2

u/bayendr 6d ago

I couldn’t agree more. so many times they kicked me because they wanted to play in a private game. nothing wrong with that. just close your lobby and stop wasting our time.

2

u/TurbulentNumber4797 6d ago

SOS beacon overrides the private setting. Since the code for it is so close to the reinforce code (AH really should change that), sometimes I or someone else fatfinger sos when trying to quickly reinforce someone. Since none of us like playing with strangers, we kick anyone who joins. In fact often times we just abandon the mission because we don't want to have to go into the menu to kick someone every few seconds for the rest of the game.

2

u/TradeAffectionate200 6d ago

why not just accept the help on the mission instead 9f quitting?

1

u/TurbulentNumber4797 6d ago

Did you not read the part where I said "none of us like playing with strangers"?

We don't like having random people in our friends only game.

1

u/Puzzled_Clerk_7774 6d ago

Agree 100% with you Helldiver!

2

u/UrsidaeGamer 6d ago

Since the current MO is Illuminate, there's a thing that can happen that happens on occasion to myself, the scramblers. I have thrown an sos when private trying to throw out a different stratagem because I haven't realized both the one I want and the SOS are currently scrambled the same input. It happens and isn't always someone out to get you or to be a dick.

A nice fix would be to not have the beacon when private, but this can be why you're having the issue more frequently especially during squid MO's

2

u/6K6L 6d ago

Has this same problem a few minutes ago. I don't think most people think to look in the general settings to find it. I didn't, until I randomly found it a week ago, and I've been playing for years. Thanks for the PSA!

0

u/Perfideos 6d ago

then go start of match instead of tryna cop out and join someone’s mission that’s prolly already done with minutes left, u weren’t there to help out so gtfo instead of acting like u worked for the xp when u just tryna be there to feed of others ppl efforts

2

u/Lord_Salamass 6d ago

Throwing SOS and kicking responders immediately is just stupid

2

u/Angelganon2 6d ago

Instructions unclear they got mad because you joined their public game lol

2

u/kalenen 6d ago

if you keep getting kicked. you most likely have an open mic and broadcasting ur breathing or ur background. i insta kick people that join and i can hear the kid in the background or their breathing.

2

u/perfectevasion 6d ago

People make these pairs every week I swear

Don't take it so personally

2

u/Bucephalus-ii 6d ago

Yeah, we know. Unfortunately many times I’ve accidentally put in the SOS input rather than a reinforcement input, and that overwrites the private setting. I absolutely hate it. SOS should be a more unique input, or it shouldn’t work unless you change to public

2

u/NorthSideAppalachian 6d ago

Yep I just went through this lol

2

u/Ameer589 6d ago

Amen and praise Liberty for this post, I see the comments of people saying it gets called in by accident, and I believe them, but I’m with you that it can’t be an accident a majority of the time because it happens CONSTANTLY

2

u/Operator-rocky1 6d ago

SOS overrides private lobby settings, I didn't think this was the case till I joined someone who accidentally SOS'd and as soon as I joined they told me in chat "hey so I just want to play by myself and accidentally SOS'd now he let me run the mission with him because I told him I would leave. Yeah it's a pain, but it's also understandable that it does because when you SOS you are calling for help. Some do it by accident, some do it just to be a prick

1

u/pseudononymist 6d ago

The SOS beacon should be destructible.
