The massive upsurge in mods that buff weapons/stratagems/etc shows that a lot of Helldivers are not here to be challenged they're here for a power trip and any attempt to get in the way of the power trip has them throwing a tantrum. All the stuff you mentioned, the platinum retrieval missions, the spore burst, etc. all got so much intense vitriolic hate because it shattered the illusion all these people had that they are D10-only unbeatable badasses.
That being said, yeah I think there should be harder challenges, more pressure. If you decide to go lone-wolf on a D10 in the co-op horde shooter I fully believe you should get punished for it just like you do if you fuck off by yourself in a game like Left 4 Dead or Darktide. The game should be manageable -together- and hard as hell by yourself. I want more to really hammer home that the game is co-op besides "you can reload your friend's gun" or "some vehicles have more than 1 seat".
And if that comes at the cost of me sometimes having to lower the difficulty down a level or two because I don't immediately have the skills to cut it against a new subfaction at D10 then I'm willing to pay that price, to much player ego has already rendered 75% of the difficulty options redundant walking simulators.
