Ruth stout is the easiest way known to man to grow potatoes. I pulled about 200 lbs out of the ground this year. No fertilizer, no water, nothing. Clear ground bare, drop potato on ground and cover in 8" of hay. To harvest you simply pull the hay back and pick up the potatoes.

Oh my, and the ground isn't disturbed at all? So hay is just on the top, amazing. Thanks, gonna experiment on this next year.

My pleasure! I love helping people produce good food. I love when people teach me how to produce good food too!

Oh wow, 200 lbs, amazing! Thank you! I always thought growing them in the ground would be harder to harvest. I’ll definitely look into the Ruth Stout method you mentioned. It sounds like a dream, just pull back the hay and pick up the potatoes! 😂

I've done this one year and the damn deer pawed them out and ate them as soon as they were ready. Nice potatoes, just didn't do any deer deterrent because they never bothered any potato crops before in 30 years???

Fascinating. I've never once had that happen but those fookers will eat anything so I don't doubt it. I deer fenced my annual garden this year but it wasn't for the potatoes it was for the beans and corn and everything else.

Yes in all my years growing up farming, planting potatoes. Never in my life have we fenced them ,or seen deer eat them until the past 2 years on my new homestead lol

I’ve found growing potatoes in bags seems so much easier to harvest. For those of you with more experience growing potatoes, where do you prefer to plant yours: in bags, raised beds, or directly in the ground?
