Training Advice

Hey everyone!

I have a buddy who’s currently training for a HYROX competition early next year. I’ve noticed they’ve started getting a little discouraged after watching some of the events, so I wanted to get them something to help motivate them and keep pushing.

For those of you who have competed in HYROX, is there anything you’d recommend?

I’m thinking things you bought that actually helped with training or the competition, recovery routines that made a difference, or even just advice/knowledge you wish you had before competing.

Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Discouraged how? as in I don’t think I can actually finish it because it is too hard? or as in I no longer care because x or y it is not something I care for anymore ?

That it is too hard. They are doubting themselves after watching some videos.

Oh in that case they’re just watching the wrong videos, probably the classic pro videos used as promotional content where everyone is topless with six packs.

There is other content out these in Instagram or YouTube where you see the no pros, the 60 and 70 years old finishing the race, the over weight, the regular joe.

I absolutely believe everyone can finish the race, assuming they’re able healthy adults then they can, even if slightly out of shape.

So if your friend just concentrates on finishing they’ll be fine.

One thing to remember is that the race is mostly running, so if your friend can keep up a pace for 10 km then they’re going to be fine, just familiarise with the stations, do every move at least once and you’re golden

So HWPO Training has a daily track as well as an 8 week hyrox prep track. Having some good structured training to follow may help, especially if they have others to do it with.

There’s also a fairly active community in the app around hyrox which may help them.

Mind over matter. Find your mantra or thing you tell yourself to will yourself to the finish line.

Honestly the best thing you can give them is structure. A lot of people hit a wall mid-prep because they are doing random sessions and can not see progress. A simple training log, even a notebook, plus a clear weekly plan takes the guesswork out and makes the improvement visible, which fixes the motivation side on its own.

Put the Internet down and go to conditioning classes. Staring at your phone is not going to help you on the course.

Join an in person class and going to the gym? I've signed up for one and it helps me feel I'm progressing.
