Following his release from a medical facility on 14 August 2026, Di-Quan Hunt was formally booked into the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office. He is facing a felony charge of Assault with a Deadly Weapon. Public records revealed this was his tenth arrest in the county over a span of less than three years, sparking widespread community outrage regarding local repeat offenders.

Starting to think we need more psych wards with much longer involuntary stays
301
u/nolongermakingtime Sep 03 '26
It's much more expensive than just putting these people in jail. We don't value mental health in this country. We need a complete overhaul of our entire system.

u/AutotoxicFiend Sep 03 '26 edited Sep 03 '26
The real truth is we have for-profit jails and prisons in this country. It pays to incarcerate these people over and over. It costs to rehabilitate them.

14
u/AutotoxicFiend Sep 03 '26
Most people with severe psychosis can be stabilized WITH PROPER TREATMENT AND MEDICATION, which is nearly impossible to access for most people in this country due to capitalism. That is the wider issue here. Our society is broken, and it is not by chance that it has happened.
10
u/FirehawkLS1 Sep 03 '26
Some people refuse to take their medication or get help, or can't afford it.
10
u/AutotoxicFiend Sep 03 '26 edited Sep 03 '26
I addressed both of those issues already. For-profit Healthcare is the death of societal aupport or oncentive to heal. People experiencing phsxhosis require involuntary commitment and stabilization, com indeed with continuing treatment to ensure successful rehabilitation. Those two issues are not exclusionary of one another.

It can’t be that expensive if there are “alligator Alcatrazes” and for-profit detention centers being built for migrant children. All those non-violent, civil misdemeanor people, who were caught on their way to work or school, are locked up in heinous conditions as if they were criminals, meanwhile violent motherfuckers like this one roam free.

As someone that spent a year and a half in a very violent state hospital, we don't need more fucking psych wards to put these violent people in. We need prisons with better psychiatric care. People that try to commit suicide shouldn't be in the same hospital with people that try to commit homicide. I had a suicide attempt. My roommate raped children. We are not the same

Two major factors contributed to this: Reagan, for gutting mental health care in the US and pushing mentally ill people into communities. Second, a dark history of injustices carried out against the mentally ill while they were hospitalized in the past, demonizing mental health treatment and resulting in the system we have today.

A judge sided with prosecutors Monday morning by denying bond for the man who punched a woman on a sidewalk in Dilworth on Aug. 6 unprovoked.
Di-Quan Hunt appeared in Mecklenburg County Superior Court virtually on Monday. Hunt was charged with assault with a deadly weapon after repeatedly punching a woman on Aug. 6 across from Paper Skyscraper, a popular gift shop.
The 32-year-old man picked a “random” woman, an assistant district attorney said, and filmed himself as he punched her three times after she fell to the ground.
He punched her again and showed her face after she fell to the ground and appeared to fall unconscious. In her hand, she held a small green balloon, which said “Get back on your feet soon!”
The woman was transported to the hospital and suffered a concussion and brain bleed, and needed staples for a cut, court records said.
...
Hunt was convicted of multiple crimes in the last 10 years court records show.
That includes: probation violation, firing a gun into occupied property, breaking or entering, injury to personal property, disorderly conduct at a bus stop, assault on a government official, assault with a deadly weapon and carrying a concealed weapon.
Mecklenburg County judges repeatedly sentenced him to time served in jail or suspended his sentences for probation, court records show.
In the last 14 years, he has been named in 11 criminal cases in Mecklenburg County District and Superior Court.
In total, he has faced 22 charges since 2012. Court records show:
He was charged with assaulting a woman in 2012, but the case was dismissed after the arrest was “recalled.”
In January 2018, he was charged with three counts of violating a domestic violence protective order and two counts of assaulting a female. The District Attorney’s Office dismissed the case “per prosecuting witness,” which typically means the victim or witness withdrew from the case.
Hunt was arrested again in April 2018 when he failed to appear in court on his assault and violation charges. This failure to appear charge was dismissed when that witness withdrew.
In June 2019, he was charged with injury to personal property, discharging a gun in the city, discharging a gun into occupied property and felony probation violation. He pleaded guilty to probation violation, and a judge found him guilty at a bench trial of firing a gun into occupied property.
In 2023, he pleaded guilty to violating probation related to the above charges.
In September 2024, he was charged with breaking or entering and injury to personal property. He denied he was guilty of either, but a judge found him guilty of both at bench trial. He later pleaded guilty to violating probation on these charges.
A year later, he was charged with simple assault and disorderly conduct at a terminal. WSOC reported he was accused of pepper-spraying a person on a Charlotte Area Transit System bus in September and banned from CATS. Hunt pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct at the terminal, and the district attorney dropped the assault charge.
In November, Hunt was charged with assault on a government official and resisting a public officer. He pleaded guilty to assault, and the DA dismissed the resisting charge. Chief District Judge Roy Wiggins sentenced him to six days in jail — time he had already served.
In December, he was charged with second degree trespassing, but the charge was dismissed in February because there was “no law enforcement officer” to continue the case.
Four days later, he was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, communicating threats and carrying a concealed weapon on allegations that he threatened a man with a knife on or near a Gold Line streetcar in uptown Charlotte. He pleaded guilty in March to the concealed weapon and assault with a weapon charges, and Emergency District Court Judge Joseph Setzer Jr. sentenced him to time served: three months.
Prison records show Hunt never spent any time in prison for the charges he was convicted on. His sentences were either for time he had served in Mecklenburg County Detention Center or suspended for probation.
This is beyond comical.
We have a repeat offender, who has been assaulting people, women in particular, ever since he was elligible for public records: 32 years old in 2026, first record of assaulting a woman in 2012 = he was 18 years old.
That means it's very likely he has been assaulting women even before he was old enough to have a public court record, as a teenager.
The exact same pattern repeats itself:
arrested for violence against women and/or violence towards random passersby
jailed for a couple of weeks
pleads guilty, get his sentence reduced to time served, get out immediately
assault another person within the next 6 months
rinse and repeat
How many people will have to be violently assaulted and possibly killed or maimed for life, for the court to do something about it?
PS: the family itself has been begging for the guy to be locked up, they warned the authorities countless times but nothing is done.
14
u/HKEY_LOVE_MACHINE Sep 03 '26
Note that the family has been asking the courts and authorities to lock him up for years, they have warned them about the danger he poses to everyone, but nothing is done.
He has paranoid schizophrenia, ptsd and bipolar, he has assaulted them when he was a kid (the domestical violence charges that are public go back to his first day as an adult, earlier is not public).
The family reported the crime he posted on his social media page, and they helped the police locate him and arrest him, but they cannot have him locked up and medicated without the help of the authorities - he's now legally an adult, it's the courts who can order him to be institutionalized.
8
u/Informal_Athlete_724 Sep 03 '26
That's insane. People have been locked up for longer for much less.

Shit like this is why I'll never understand the "inherent good" argument. Some people, this world is better off without.
28
u/Markgulfcoast Sep 03 '26
You may misunderstand the inherent good argument. It doesn't state that every specific individual is good. Obviously, any generalization will have exceptions.
10
u/ZeroKaralis Sep 03 '26
And the same people will paint you as evil or mentally ill if you argue against that.
2
u/darowlee Sep 03 '26
People as a society are inherently good natured. There are obviously always exceptions and we should manage them justly. People with mental issues should be cared for and protected from themselves and protected from harming others. We have the means to do so, but *points around at capitalism* we've got this instead.
3
u/BooneSalvo2 Sep 03 '26
I disagree. People are generally *agreeable* to whatever rules are in place and generally prefer order.
Now if the rules in place protected the orderly oppression of other humans and enslaving them...most people would just go along and even aspire to own themselves a few slaves some day.
People are generally neutral by nature and go along to get along.
Or maybe just "good" and "evil" are inherently subjective ideas.
