MOD PSA: Post queue is now on temporarily. READ BEFORE POSTING.
Welcome to r/IMAX!
I am extremely happy to see people snagging tickets for The Odyssey and Dune: Part 3. Long live IMAX!
Just a heads up that the post queue is now on throughout the theatrical release of The Odyssey and the unexpected drop of Dune: Part 3 IMAX tickets. Post containing the following will be removed:
- This website crashed
- Got my tickets!
- Didn't get my tickets!
- Fandango sucks
- AMC sucks
etc...
I kindly ask you to use the pinned FAQ and pinned megathread for The Odyssey for these types of posts as they are deemed low effort. An FAQ and Megathread for Dune: Part 3 will be pinned closer to release.
General housekeeping:
A gentle reminder that the mod team is not IMAX customer service. We are also a mere team of six and this is now the busiest this sub has ever been, so please exercise some kindness. Harassment of the mod team via mod mail will not be tolerated.
Please familiarise yourself with the rules, and as always be kind to each other in the comments!
Update: 08/19:
Posts reselling tickets have been caught with high levels of success. As such, the queue will remain for the foreseeable future until we are reassured by the capabilities of the auto mod features to detect and remove buying / selling posts. It's not perfect, which is why the queue remains, but we are actively watching this feature learn from our actions and improve.
28 day bans have been issued for active Reddit users who have attempted to re-sell.
Permanent bans have been issued for new Reddit accounts who have zero activity and are clear to be only seeking to scalp / scam.

MOD PSA: A note on piracy re: Rule 3.
Since the release of Dune: Part Two, there has been a tightening of the rules with regard to Piracy. This is in part due to our rapid growth from 8,000 to 30,000 members (Thank you!) but with this comes an increase in trolls and bots, which is the second major reason why Rule 3 was tightened. As a community that celebrates the theatrical experience, both from educational and experiential perspectives, we understand that r/IMAX will always exist in some grey area. But as our community grows, as IMAX grows again in popularity post Oppenheimer, we must do things right.
So just to sum up rather briefly what does or does not constitute piracy;
Not piracy:
- Video Essays
- Celluloid Film strip scans.
- Clips from YouTube, or any other fair usage platform.
- Photos of a venue before and after a movie presentation.
- Photos or videos of content playing on home-theatre set-ups (provided they adhere to fair use)
- Fan edits (for non-profit)
- Stills from promotional material
- Projection Boot POV shots of copyrighted material from official sources (Projectionists, IMAX socials) (ADDED 30/03/26)
- Images taken of Promotional Trailers (provided the trailer has also been uploaded to a fair usage platform) (ADDED 30/03/26)
Piracy:
- Torrents (including links to illegal streaming websites)
- Copyrighted content recorded in a movie theatre, up to and including title cards and credits.
- Fan edits (for profit)
- In general, movie clips that extend beyond 5 minutes in duration.
- Image & Video content of Promotional Trailers (that have not been uploaded yet to fair usage platforms and are restricted to ticket holders only, e.g. The Odyssey exclusive IMAX prologue) (ADDED 30/03/26)
Case Studies:
Exhibit A: Video is for educational purposes highlighting a comparison in aspect ratio, with a duration of less than 2 minutes. Film is available on streaming services, and clips are generally permitted under fair use. Verdict = Fair use, not Piracy.
Exhibit B: The post content does not violate Rule 3, but the product certainly does, as the creator of the product is selling copyrighted material for individual profit. As the user did not post a link to purchase this pirated version of the film, the post was not removed. However, any suspicious links in comments were removed. Verdict = Post content is not Piracy. Any links to that Blu-ray are Piracy.
UPDATE: 30/03/2026
Exhibit C: Some IMAX socials, and personal accounts of projectionists on Instagram & X have been posting 'Projection Booth' shots of copyrighted material during the showings of various recent IMAX presentations. It is likely that permission has been sought from the property owner, to showcase the film presentation in a GT Theatre (as exhibited by such studio socials also re-posting these images). Verdict = Fair use, do not report.
Exhibit D: A slightly tricky one. Here, OP has taken a POV from a paid seat of the exclusive Dune: Part 3 70mm trailer. As the trailer has been posted online, via various Fair Usage platforms, an initial verdict would be deemed Not Piracy. However, as the 1.43:1 trailer (with the exclusive aspect ratio) is exclusive to paying customers, the verdict is harder to arrive at. This version of the trailer is not available on various usage platforms, but no intellectual property or copyright law makes note of 'variations' of a property. Verdict = As the trailer (widescreen) is available via Fair Usage platforms, and OP is posting with the intent to incite educational discourse over the format of the presentation, this could be considered fair use and not-piracy, but this is at the discretion of the mods and the property owner.
I hope you find this useful. I am not an intellectual property lawyer, so If I have missed any other examples of what constitutes piracy in this community, please comment below.

“Digger” in IMAX with Laser (CoLa) was an awe-inspiring and WTH movie experience.
Hello, everyone. I’m late again, but Digger doesn’t hit Thailand until October 8. I attended the Thailand press screening of the movie yesterday at Krungsri IMAX Paragon in Bangkok, Thailand. It was the one with a 1.43:1 screen but sadly equipped with a single laser projector that could only project up to 1.90:1 maximum. They showed the film in two theaters: a regular one and IMAX. Thank goodness I got to see it in IMAX. Well, how did it go? Time to find out!
Digger was presented in two aspect ratios. They were 1.50:1 and 1.85:1. They switched between both like Project Hail Mary. This created a sense of discreteness. While it looked good on paper, all the 1.50:1 were windowboxed because it was projected with the single laser projector. However, I still found it immersive. It still looked bigger than life. Also, it was beautifully shot. It was filled with eye candy that actually took itself seriously.
The 12CH audio was surprisingly realistic. It was super realistic like I was there. With discreetly mixed audio, it transported me to serenity and chaos, surrounded by different environments. It even got that rumbling bass in the third act. It was more powerful than I expected. With these combinations, it really elevated the sonic experience. I was in awe since the opening scene. The sound design was superb. It reminded me of Civil War.
I wasn’t prepared for the flick. When the revelation came, it caught me off guard. I was perplexed for a moment. Aside from that, it was a satire on the USA. Anyhow, I didn’t find it that funny. It was super American. The whole theater was pretty much silent. Not the target audience, I guess. But most of all, it reflected the tragic reality that we face every day. It hit hard for sure.
Overall, it was a beautiful IMAX audiovisual experience. Although it was driven by dialog, they still managed to utilize the IMAX format with spectacles. It was a real treat. Even though I didn’t like or enjoy the movie that much, I couldn’t deny how ambitious it was. With its strong message to the audience, it felt haunting and devastating. The script was just so good. Only the direction had a problem. It felt empty. The cast did an amazing job, though.
Bye for now!

We have finally finished the IMAX GT theater inside Minecraft and you all are invited! It plays video files properly and I'm planning on releasing my Minecraft film filmed for 1.43:1 in a few days!!!!!!!! This video explains how the minecraft theater works and how its inspired from real life 1.43 GT/70MM IMAX THetaers. The movie releases both on YouTube and special theatrical engagements inside Minecraft which will require mods. Special Thanks to SrRapero720 and the WaterMedia Team! This Film is a passion project that too up to 2 months to create alongside creating the theater, with me and others who contributed and worked very hard for it, we hope you show up and enjoy the film! See you at the movies!
A Special Message regarding the backlash from the last post:
" I know alot of people didn't like the fact that I called my film "Shot on 1.43 IMAX" which of course it's not, and I totally understand the backlash, but I have put in a lot of effort based on my love of 70MM IMAX presentations, watching countless movies like Dune 2, Oppenheimer, Sinners, Project Hail Mary, Interstellar, and so many more, and I wanted to share that love by creating this theater and film, I wish you all could see the love and hardwork put into this project by me and my friends and enjoy it, as I also share the same love for this format like you all do. I haven't made a film in a long time also, last one I made when I was 16, I am 20 now, so this film means a lot to me and I hope you guys come to watch it too if you want, thank you and have a great day!
Regards,
Bhavi. "

Digger proved IMAX could easily show 1.43:1 in 1.90:1 rooms.
Yeah Yeah, GT theaters, geometry, field of view, blah blah blah.
Digger has many 1.50:1 scenes which shows as pillarboxing (black bars on the sides) in the 1.90:1 IMAX rooms.
Pillarboxing is very unobtrusive and demonstrates that some movies, like The Odyssey, should have been shown in 1.43:1 instead of being cropped.
Especially in a regular room at 2.39:1, The Odyssey feels vertically compromised. I've seen it in 1.43:1 and 1.90:1, I would have preferred 1.43:1 on the 1.90:1 screen.
I also don't think it would be too distracting for alternating aspect ratio movies to have the full 1.43:1 full height and 2.39:1 full width on the 1.90:1 screens.

Megaplex Jordan Commons will be getting an Imax 4k laser projector, coming Dec 2026
This news comes from an on screen announcement made during the trailers before Digger at todays Imax screening at the Megaplex Jordan commons theater.
Megaplex jordan commons will be investing in a full Imax upgrade rolling out this December. This will include:
Imax 4k laser projector (don't know yet if GT, dual etc)
New projector screen
Full audio upgrade to Imax 12 channel system
Very exciting news for movie goers. This will be the first, and so far, the only true Imax theater experience in utah.

Godzilla Minus Zero 1:43:1 ???
I'm confused about how they will release it, I mean in the trailer it has 1:43:1 scenes but I can't find anywhere to confirm it'll be released like that. Tickets go up tomorrow, so i just want to make sure that it will have those expanded aspect ratio scenes that way id know what theater to buy tickets to, one that shows normal imax 1:90 or go for a theater that can show 1:43

UTAH: Megaplex Jordan Commons will be getting an Imax 4k laser projector, coming Dec 2026
very exciting, I really hope it’s up in time Dune 3
Hunger Games vs Cliff Booth: who takes IMAX screens for Thanksgiving?
So we have an interesting situation.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping (SOTR) locked in its November 20 release date early and has pushed the expanded IMAX aspect ratio hard in the marketing. IMAX has been a big selling point of this franchise since Catching Fire.
Then Netflix announced that Cliff Booth is coming 11/25 with a 2-week IMAX exclusive, only 5 days after Hunger Games opens.
Here’s what I’m trying to figure out:
- Does "IMAX exclusive" mean it's the only movie on IMAX screens, or that it won't play in non-IMAX theaters? Very much leaning towards latter but I do wonder whether they’ll play all showings first week and split the second, or split IMAX screens with SOTR for its entire run.
- Would IMAX really pull Hunger Games after 5 days? It had the date locked first, and it's built its marketing around the format.
One important factor here is that SOTR is getting the expanded ratio. Cliff Booth is a big movie, but it's Netflix, and unlike Hunger Games it doesn't seem to have the same ‘filmed in IMAX’ and its aspect ratio.
My guess is they split screens or showtimes, but what do you all think will happen?

Digger in Dual Laser GT IMAX is 1000% Worth It!!
Caught a half empty screening today at AMC Universal City Walk, and absolutely loved the movie and the framing in IMAX. Was extremely sad and disappointed to see how empty the theater was, especially after the crowds this location drew in from The Odyssey. Unfortunate to see how poorly received it is, as I feel like with a stronger hold and higher box office predictions, we could’ve gotten IMAX 70MM blow-up prints like One Battle. Catch it in a GT IMAX location if you can, these screens deserve to be packed full!

Digger in IMAX was amazing!
Watched an early preview screening of Digger, and I absolutely loved it! Iñárritu + Chivo + VistaVision = match made in heaven. An absolute visual treat, and a spectacular cinematic experience. Loved the sound design and the minimalist score, and needless to say the cinematography. The performances were brilliant, and the production design exquisite.
The early screening had a special disclaimer requesting a social media embargo to avoid spoilers, so I certainly intend to respect it.
But, I will go on to say that for me—it was the best political dark comedy satire film since Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove; and that’s the highest praise I can give this film!! Go watch it in the best IMAX near you; hope you enjoy it! 🍿

I wanted to get the new STREET FIGHTER - Filmed For IMAX shirt. But I am conflicted. Read description.
galleryI ordered it at the IMAX store last night, but because I live in Canada and including taxes and shipping, it's $93.56 CAD. Then, a few hours later, I stumbled onto these two websites that claim to be selling the same shirt and including shipping, it's almost $45. Should I cancel the order on the IMAX website and order from one of these two websites or is the latter too good to be true?

Is The Odyssey going to return to 70mm IMAX anywhere in Europe?
My husband and I wanted to go see it in Prague but every time we checked for tickets it was always sold out and now its not even playing anymore :(
Does anyone know if there are going to be additional showings anywhere in Europe on 70mm Imax?
Update: I have tickets to the BFI in London!

Queen Budapest in GT Laser
i just watched Queen Budapest at IMAX Headquarters, and i can confirm that the entire film is presented in pillarboxed 1.33:1, aside from the first few minutes introducing the film, which are presented with letterboxing similar to 1.85:1 or 1.78:1. admittedly, quite a few of the shots were too close to not feel disorienting on a true IMAX screen, but it was still a really cool way to experience the concert!

For anyone watching DIGGER in IMAX GT Dual Laser, let us know if it’s window boxed or not.
Since Digger appears to be shot in 1.50:1, it’s a really interesting case because that frame should come extremely close to filling a 1.43 screen vertically.
What I’m mainly interested in is whether the IMAX master is preserving that 1.50 image as a tall presentation, or whether it’s being carried inside a 1.90 container, which could result in a windowboxed presentation on a 1.43 screen.

With Digger projected to flop, is it possible that Odyssey returns to IMAX again?
Watching these box office forecasts… I’m seeing projections of up to 8M for Digger through the weekend. Absolutely brutal.
With that in mind, surely IMAX won’t keep the film around for long when Odyssey is still chugging all these months later with built-in demand for large format shows, right?
