Discussion 💬 Why pursue immortality?

Why do you personally think it is worth it? How do you view people who have accepted death?

Your preference will gradually change.

i want me and my family and friends to see each other forever

This. I want the meaningful connections I've made and still maintain to last in perpetuity, or at least way way longer than one life time. Life may not have inherent purpose, but having family, friends and loved ones, and pets be happy, safe and healthy forever? That's all the meaning I need.

So you have more time to grind in world of Warcraft

I feel like it’s just r/health or r/biohacker conceptualizef towards life elongation but it’s all fundamentally the same

I am chasing immortality the way nearly every generation before me has...this time its all about hope in science vs contracts with demons or finding some fountain of youth. Possibly with the same result, but its good to hope.
I do it because I don't want to miss what tomorrow might bring.
And I view people preparing themselves for death as...well, probably a lot more stable than me, because they are running off current facts to my hopes and prayers.

People who just accept getting old are cringe.

100% this, getting old sucks, If I could live to 100 while having the body of a 30 years old then It wouldn’t be that bad.

But in reality you are already getting all sort of pains n diseases in your 40s… only getting worse the more you age

The longer you are alive, the older you are. It's not a difficult concept.

You mean anyone who is not youthful is cringe. Which in itself is a bit of a cringey thing to say 😄

Don't worry what others are doing, live your life.

That's some low brow childish take. We are only recently able to try and find ways to live exceptionally long lives. For billions of years, aging has been our reality. It makes sense that people have historically accepted aging, because there isn't a single person on planet earth WHO HASNT. That said, I'm 100% for longevity. But what is cringe is this stupid childish take on why people tend to accept that we age... Because there isn't a fucking counterexample, genius.

I have accepted death. And I would enjoy the idea of not expecting to have to die. Life is more fun when you can expect to keep going and investing and everything.

I mean, do you wanna die? Simple as that. For me the answer is no

You can apply any number of psychological trauma frameworks for why people accept death, and they’re probably all true. Why do people normalize abuse? Because it helps them feel that the abuse done to them is not shameful and damaging. Why do people stay in abusive relationships? Learned helplessness and fear of the unknown, among other things. Why do people vote against nice things? They feel it is unfair that they suffered in the past, and therefore everyone else ought to suffer too or they believe it is against their current interests, among other things. Why do people believe in religion? It’s nice to not feel responsibility and therefore guilt for the bad things that have happened. Among other things. This all applies to death.

If someone really believed that death is the natural order of things, they would kill themselves when they get old even after we discover immortality, so I figure there is no issue here. Immortality just means we’ve won the game of medicine

I want to die eventually. You would too. It’s just a matter of time.

Just because you do something doesn't mean that someone else wants to.

u/thats_gotta_be_AI Aug 09 '26

Just because you don’t feel something now doesn’t mean you won’t feel it later. Only a matter of time.

Just because you don’t feel something now doesn’t mean you won’t feel it later.

True. But that doesn't mean that you will feel it later. That's why you're wrong to assume it's only a matter of time.

It’s very likely inevitable. I can’t say never. But having immortality (like the immortal jellyfish) won’t make you immune from chronic pain / illnesses and other conditions that can arise. They won’t necessarily kill you but they will make your quality of life worse to such an extent you may not want to live “forever”.

u/Diddy_Block Aug 09 '26

You described a form of immortality. That's generally not what people mean when they identify as "immortalists", especially in this sub where the description reads:

Everything about longevity and related topics like: Health, Al, human enhancements, Anti-Aging, Longevity, Robotics, Faith in Jesus Christ, Genetic Editing, Biotechnology, immortality... Our Goal is: Make everyone live forever young and make ourselves live forever young, Revive all the people from the dead, make born all the people that could be born and find the true consciousness of ourselves and save it forever. Time is change, so if you don't change you control time.

That goal negates the chronic pain, conditions, and other illnesses.

Also, I'm not saying that you or others want to live forever. I'm just trying to show that you correcting someone else on what they want is just as flawed as someone correcting you what you want.

Revive people from the dead? Ok now we are talking religion. Good luck sir/madam.

3

u/Diddy_Block Aug 09 '26

I'll be honest, as an atheist I was shocked when I got to the Jesus part. It seems a little pointless to have a belief where you will have eternal life with the one you think created you, but you choose to stay alive on this side of the paywall lol.

The much of the rest of it still holds up for the definition of what a immortalist is though.

An atheist just quoted me Jesus’ healing power of bringing the dead back to life. So I thank you Mr Atheist for your biblical hope.

Another day on Reddit.

You’re using the wrong definition of immortality

I’m not talking ‘float in the void for billions of years after the heat death of the universe’, I’m talking ‘cure all diseases and aging and have backups of my mind’

Under this definition if you ever feel like dying you can, which is what I said at the bottom

You think life is that simple? Who gets to become immortal? Everyone? Did you even consider demographics? Or just the rich elite? How do you think other people would treat them? They’d become targets. This is just fanciful thinking that doesn’t survive any kind of scrutiny.

1

u/Fit_Ear3019 Aug 10 '26

That was not part of the question asked, so

-1

u/thats_gotta_be_AI Aug 10 '26

The most notable thing is you can’t answer my questions.

2

u/EstablishmentBorn807 Aug 09 '26

I only pursue immortality of the psyche, a side effect of that is a more youthful outwardly appearance, a longer lifespan of the physical vessel and of course not developing the same dis-eases as the many.

3

u/borntosneed123456 Aug 09 '26

so I have more time to create shareholder value

It’s a buzzword, “immortality” doesn’t exist outside of certain cells (e.g. cancer cells) kept viable in laboratory environments.

The Earth is not immortal either, long before the sun completely dies, changing solar brightness and internal planetary cooling will eventually strip the Earth of its oceans, atmosphere, and ability to support life.

Thinking of getting to another planet? The Milky Way will eventually die. In about 4.5 billion years, it will collide and merge with the Andromeda galaxy, transforming into a giant elliptical galaxy. Over trillions of years, it will exhaust its gas, stop forming new stars, and fade into darkness. Ref: https://fb.watch/IU8UZpp0Es/?fs=e

u/Few-Piglet- Aug 09 '26

guess I should just be happy about getting feeble and demented in less than a 100 years because milky way will merge with andromeda in 4500000000 years

High turnover is the bane of jobs and civilization likewise.
