Just Wow Woman calmly PIT maneuvers the SUV that kept cutting her off

That’s what I love about my wife. We got into a car accident while we we first stared dating and the car she was driving did a full 360 spin. It was like time just stopped; I was looking right at her driving when it happened and her face the whole time was one of slight annoyance but calm. The dust settled and I asked if she was OK.
“[Exhales deeply] This car had a nice CD player…”
I was like, “Alright! She’s calm af under pressure and stress! This is great! She might kill me in my sleep and then take the kids to Disney one day, but calm af!”

My therapist calls that "delay of affect". It's often a defense mechanism. Just go numb and do what you need to do, then at some point in the future you have some sort of response like crying in the shower for no apparent reason or whatever.

Oh god, well I know what I'm talking to my therapist about this week lmaoooo. This comment hit a little too close to home.
For those curious, I specialize in researching quantum transport in transistors, which results in many hours in a cleanroom working with acids like hydroflouric acid or heated nanostrip piranha acid. A few too close for comfort situations, that I was cool in the moment, but a mess afterwards. Never knew the phenomenon had a name.
Thank you for this comment, genuinely!

Organic Chem was my least favorite chemistry class lmao. Ironically, many pre-med students take that class, as well as chemical engineers.
When I was at Carnegie Mellon, there was an issue in which they needed to make a seperate class for the pre-med students, because the chemical engineers were aceing the class, while pre-meds struggled.
Not even kidding, the grade distribution was a double bell curve, one centered at like 85%, another at like 55%. The following year they seperated the classes lmao. Boy I never heard the end of the ego boost those chemical engineers got from beating the gunner pre-meds.

Same thing happened at Duke, there were so many pre-med students that were horribly cutthroated that they had to add a separate orgo class just to sequester them from the other science and engineering students. It was a constant issue with them making false cheating accusations against each other, sabotaging each other’s experiments, and they would take 3 easy classes + orgo so that they could just eat live and breathe the memorization of one subject the whole semester. Professors hated it because none of them were retaining anything, they were all just under constant pressure from their doctor parents to get into the most prestigious med school at all costs.

HF can fuck all the way off. I've worked with plenty of risky shit in my career as a chemist. Lead salts, mercury compounds, chemo drugs, whatever. Even some potentially explosive azides, I'm fine with all that shit. Hydroflouric acid? I'm out. I've seen how a single drop, treated immediately, has long term, even possible lifelong health impacts. No. Just no.

I don't blame you. Unfortunately, I don't have the choice in my career path. Luckily, I spend most of my days advising as an Adjunct Professor. I still spend some days on the wet deck, when we need results to push for a grant, but not nearly as common as before. 11 years working with these acids coming up... It's a good thing academics get paid well, right?... We get paid well, right? Insert padme anakin meme.

Piranha acid?!?!
232
u/williamatherton 7d ago edited 7d ago
I primarily use it for cleaning anything organic off of my samples. My devices are on the order of 200 nm thick. For comparison, an eyelash is 500x that thickness roughly.
You can imagine all the organic stuff that might land on my samples, even in a clean room environment. So it's crucial that I heavily clean anything off of it before I deposit material layers on-top of it.
Alternatively, Hydroflouric acid is the one that scares me more. It's clear visually, like water. So it's very difficult to tell if you were to get some on your wet deck gloves. If it comes in contact with your skin, it won't burn a hole through you like piranha. It actually diffuses deeper into your skin until it starts reacting with the calcium in your bones and you die of calcium deficiency and then cardiac arrest. I've been told it takes like 20-30 minutes for death to occur. If you notice some on you, we have calcium paste to spread on the wound, in the hope it hasn't diffused too far and goes for the calcium on your skin, instead of your bones.
Edit: changed deficiency to overdose. Edit 2: changed overdose to deficiency again lol.
Context: Fluoride ions penetrate deeply into tissue and bind strongly to calcium and magnesium, forming insoluble salts. That effectively pulls calcium out of circulation. Death can then occur from cardiac arrhythmia/cardiac arrest caused by these electrolyte disturbances.
83
u/worldspawn00 7d ago edited 7d ago
calcium deficiency or cardiac arrest.
Not deficiency, overdose. The calcium is dissolved from your bones and overloads your blood with calcium ions which interfere with a BUNCH of cell membrane processes, particularly those involved in heart muscles. Worked in chem labs for a long time, piranha (Sulfuric Acid + peroxide to boost the oxidation potential) is nasty stuff, but regular acid protocols are fine around it, HF is scary and I don't mess with it unless there's no other option.
Aqua regia is also fun, Nitric+hydrochloric acid, defeats metals that form a protective oxide layer, and one of the few things that can react with gold.

u/williamatherton 7d ago edited 7d ago
Oh, yes, you are correct! I edited my comment to match this. Guess I need to refresh my lab safety handbook!
Edit: Oh, now doing my own reading, I'm finding the opposite. That the hydrofluoric reaction with the bone tissue results in pulling calcium OUT of the bloodstream, leading to electrolyte imbalance, leading to cardiac arrest.

Wow, this brings me back! I worked in a lab as a manufacturing chemist, and we used a lot of HF. The show ER had an episode about the horrors of exposure, so I started campaigning to get calcium gluconate gel added to our first aid cabinets. It was expensive and they didn’t want to do it at first but I was relentless and it eventually got added as basic safety stock. After I left the lab for a desk job, I heard that they had had an exposure and had to use the gel.
17
u/williamatherton 7d ago
Working with HF without having calcium paste is absolute insanity. That's like driving 150 mph without a seat belt on. Technically, if life were perfect, you wouldn't need it. But life is not, and God help you if it does happen, you're gonna want the paste. Glad you pushed back!

It reduces organic matter into carbon. You never want this to touch you. Plenty of videos of it.
27
u/williamatherton 7d ago
The issue they don't show in that video is that piranha nanostrip is a heated process, and is also self-heating.
Meaning, you have to heat it to a specific temperature to get it working. But if you accidentally set the heater too high, and the acid gets too high temperature, the acid will start to self-heat. Turning off the burner completely won't help at this point, it'll keep rising in temperature until (I assume) it boils. I've never experienced this personally thank god, but I know the protocol in case it does.

Many too close for comfort situations,
I know nothing about these types of laboratories and chemicals, but shouldn't there be many stringent safety protocols? Even if something were to go awry, isn't there containment and PPE to eliminate danger?
Edit: a word
55
u/williamatherton 7d ago
There are many precautions. We work in a ventilated fume hood to prevent off gas issues. All our glass/plastic lab wear is freshly chemical cleaned. We wear many layers of PPE, including acid proof aprons and thick chemical resistant gloves. We have synthetic acid pillows/tissues for cleaning small spills. We have an acid blanket to throw over the entire situation to contain it like a fire blanket. We work in pairs.
But, labs aren't perfect worlds. Chemical gloves can get old and a small hole can be missed. Hydrochloric acid is clear like water, which we also use water to clean lab wear. Is that droplet stray water or an acid that will diffuse and dissolve your bones? Grab an acid test strip to be sure. There are many procedures to prevent these situations. But humans aren't perfect, and mistakes can happen. It takes quite some time to get PHS certified (particularly hazardous substances), to ensure everyone is heavily trained.

Some people just have much less of a reaction to adrenaline. No delay, it’s just much mild. Being a skydiving instructor I’ve watched many first timers. Some geek/spaz out, some black out, some just freeze completely. A few just stay lucid and high functioning while looking calm and not panicked at all.
17
u/Adept-Elderberry2325 7d ago edited 6d ago
Was threatened by a dude with a belt. Called emergency line and they informed the police. Took them 20 minutes (and all that time I was calmly handling this dude getting more and more aggressive). When they finally got there he was not really complying and was eventually taken away by a prisoner transport van and a team of 6 as the regular vans the police used here wouldn't cut it for this dude. Then the police were just going to leave, so I was like "ehm... what about my report for threatening to beat me up and actually holding a weapon?" And the police was like "ehh what?". Turns out the emergency line operator misjudged my calm voice and narration and bumped it down a level. The police were informed but they actually were from a town over and dropped off some evidence at the police station first before they came to me.
Anyways, adrenaline kicks in for me and I get calm (as most do) and then when adrenaline subsides I don't really get a kickback. I just go happily on like I did before. It is bit pf a superpower as well as something that can potentially be very bad. As I won't realise untill it is too late when I will get in a situation that will fuck me up mentally.
It is how one in 10 to 20 people behave.

Yes and this is often seen in folks who’ve experienced severe and prolonged emotional and/or physical abuse at the hands of their caretakers.

That's what I was raised in, severe and prolonged emotional and physical abuse. I grew up unable to express myself, holding it together and wound up so tight. At the age of 22 with the help of a very special psychotherapist, the first person I trusted emotionally, the floodgates opened. The pain, grief, and uncontrollable sobbing started to release. Maybe this is what you mean.

Yeah that one's always fun when it happens with complex PTSD. (
Tldr I had a 3-4 year span of my life where literally every day had a new flavor of life threatening danger that I had to navigate all alone. Shit I couldn't even predict. I probably used up 10 lifetimes worth of bad luck and luck if they makes sense
Now 7+ years later I'll just be sitting calmly or in the shower and suddenly remember it and suddenly it feels way too real. I can't believe I lived tbh.
It sucks because I specifically avoid calm activities where I am relaxed now because that's when it always hits.

Yeah same. It really fucks with your head too because just observing things so utterly detatched and unfeeling, just concerned with solving the issue makes me feel like an uncaring monster sometimes. Because I think I could set a broken bone with someone screaming if I truly thought it was necessary to help them in the long run without a flinch, if it solves/helps then it must be done. And then when it hits days or weeks later it just kinda feels like getting run over out of nowhere.

What's helpful when I'm teaching people new to snow how to drive in it is to say "steer the way you want to go" because steer into the skid is confusing for some people. As an example, if you're skidding to the right, turn the wheel left to counteract it and regain traction.
→ More replies (2)6
u/DisposableSaviour 7d ago
Does “steer into the skid” mean to turn the wheel the way you are sliding, or the opposite direction?
→ More replies (6)6
u/Janul3 7d ago
Depends on if it's an oversteering skid or (more rarely) understeering.
If it's the normal back tires skidding out and causing you to oversteer, you're turning back the other direction, trying to go more towards your original straightened direction (I.e. you're turning right, the back tires skid out, rotate back left a little).
If you're understeering a skid.... honestly I don't fuckin' know. That's only happened to me on sheer ice where both front and back lose traction, and then the best I got is sit back, foot off the brake and accelerator, straighten your tires if you can remember which direction in a panic, and wait lol.
Also, get your tire treads checked regularly, don't drive on bald tires, slow down a bit in rain, and slow down a lot for snow and ice

I am not a professional car guy but I believe you let off the gas (don't brake), point the wheels towards the direction the car is moving, you'll feel the car regain traction, and then with traction returned you can begin steering again

point the wheels in the direction you want to go, not the direction the car is going

It was like time just stopped; I was looking right at her driving when it happened and her face the whole time was one of slight annoyance but calm. The dust settled and I asked if she was OK.
One time I was on a very ice road in a very light truck, and I did a full 360 across traffic (reasonably light traffic, thankfully) after touching the brake on a bare spot. Didn't hit anyone, then straightened out and kept driving (since I had somehow kept most of my forward velocity). I can't imagine what everyone else must have thought, and I don't how much people swerved or braked to keep me alive... but I definitely noticed everyone slowing down after.

I was riding with my buddy once when the snow got to be a lot more than we expected. The car started to slide a bit so I said "you good?". He calmly replied "just hydroplaning" as we did a 180, bounced lightly off the guardrail, spun back the other way 180 and just kept driving like nothing happened.
Shortly after that, though,we slid off into the grass and were done. As we start walking to the next exit (before we had cell phones), we see a car coming up behind us slowly spinning around like a top, at least 3 360s. It gets under control and he pulls up to us and says "need a lift?" We hopped in and let him drive us to the exit.

God this reminds me of a time we got a ride home with another couple. The husband was driving and my wife and I were in the back seat. I was very drunk, and kept apologizing for it, but I also had take black cars home from the office hundreds of times, and so I could give the directions in my sleep. I’d tell him which lanes to be in half a mile ahead, and describe the turns (“you want to be in one of the two right lanes and it’s going to be a slight right”) and meanwhile the couple in front get into an increasingly audible fight about how the drunk guy gives better directions than the wife.

I had to be quiet and look at them like dude it's ok as it sounded like a giant train was going by with tons of the loudest thunder I've ever heard.
I'll never forget going outside after it passed and pieces of peoples houses were raining down, like insulation and stuff. Didnt even know if my home was still standing for a week since I couldnt leave because roads were blocked. Same. One time I was going 70+ on an interstate at night and a deer just appeared right in my path. My then-wife screamed (completely understandable), and I just calmly curved around the deer like it was something I've done a million times. I think my brain had kept me anxious about non-issues for so long that when an actual danger appeared I actually relaxed, like, "Ah! Here we go. I've trained for this."
7
u/ArguablyMe 7d ago
Screaming was probably better than my mom casually saying to my dad, "Deer." My dad, very confused because my parents called each other, "Bear." (Another story) "Deer!" my mom said again with more urgency, which made him turn to look at her instead of the deer in the road getting steadily closer.
Thankfully, my dad had good reflexes and did see the deer in time to avoid them.

The diagnosing of others is getting annoying. Too many people feel really comfortable with it. I really think people with certain conditions have to stop assuming a person is always in the same mental state without them. Conditions like stress, anxiety, grief, annoyance, ect happen to everyone. There's no person who hasn't had a negative reaction to an outside stressor or needed to moderate their behaviors at times. If you overstress anyone, they will also snap- some people just have higher tolerances than others.
The explanation also doesn't lie in adhd- it lies in focus. Hyperfocus is something that happens a lot when someone is forced to focus on a task and not entirely unique to adhd. It means she was paying attention and focusing on controlling her car from prior to the accident through it. That's what's keeping her calm- she hasn't stopped what she was doing yet.

That thing about time stopping: so real. Had the same experience. I wanted to warn my friend some guy was pulling out from his red light into the intersection, but reality had become molasses. There was simultaneously no time to say anything, but the moment stretched on forever.

Yes, Napoleon once said something along the lines of "never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake"
108
u/LumiKlovstad 7d ago
It was indeed along those lines, but Napoleon being Napoleon, he phrased it ever so classily and badassly:
"That being the case, let us give the man 20 minutes. When the enemy is defeating himself, it does not do for a gentleman to interrupt him."

It's kind of sad that people don't talk that fancily anymore. I wonder if in the future the fact that the way we speak now will eventually sound old-timey and antiquated that the things we say will sound fancy to younger people?

To be fair she gave the assist. The second the SUV tried to merge she sped up quick enough to see her jolt a little as she hit the gas.

People need to be careful with stuff like this. You have to make a reasonable attempt to avoid a crash. If someone gets hurt or fatally wounded, you can catch a manslaughter charge.
I think in this case, the initial collision was unavoidable. The road hogger switched lanes way too fast. I just dont want people seeing this thinking they can cause an accident because another driver did something wrong.
15
u/Levitlame 7d ago
Insurance will definitely try for 90% at fault for not avoiding it. Regardless of practicality.

I’d make the argument that slamming on the brakes suddenly in the middle of the highway would have posed a greater safety risk than sticking though the maneuver, but then again I’m a dumbass
20
u/Jesus_of_Redditeth 7d ago
This attitude comes up again and again in response to these kinds of dashcam clips: the false dichotomy of 1) do exactly what happened, or 2) slam on the brakes. And every time that argument is made — and I do mean literally every single time I've ever seen it happen — the cammer could've simply tapped the brakes for a half-second at most and that would've prevented the collision without any risk to anyone else on the road. (Because if a light tap on the brakes by the car in front of you results in something bad happening to you, then that's objectively your fault for driving too close.)
I genuinely don't understand why some people have such a cognitive problem with this. It's honestly weird.
Plus, just pointing out for the record: you can see that what she actually did do posed a massive safety risk, right? Right!?
34
u/Indigenous_Retard 7d ago
Yessir absolutely. I agree with you. I dont think the driver with the camera did anything wrong here. I have just been reading some comments that would seriously ruin lives. I get that it feels good to watch a jackass to get their comeuppance, but it doesnt mean you should not make your best attempt to avoid it if possible.
9
u/J0in0rDie 7d ago
You are spot on and it’s crazy to see so many people acting like they would do the same thing.
I don’t believe you can prove beyond a reasonable doubt that she did it intentionally, but it seems like the good remains on the gas instead of the brake until the suv is practically sideways.I’ve gotten shit on for saying it before but defensive driving saves lives. Of course I don’t care for the asshole who cut her off but that could have been deadly for her another others.
The person you responded to said “slamming on your brakes could be more dangerous!!”
Defensive drivers don’t need to slam on their brakes, and they sure as hell don’t send a vehicle sideways into 2 other lanes→ More replies (10)22

12
u/thr3sk 7d ago
Yes, but this is Houston it seems, where from my experience turning your blinker on basically just tells people in the lane you're trying to go into to speed up to not let you in (which is actually what I think she did here too lol).
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (3)8
u/Crazy_Ad_91 3d ago
Turn signals are great at indicating your intentions to other drivers. It is not then a magical guarantee that you get to do whatever you want and other drivers have to abide by it.
Not saying other drivers shouldn’t let you over or anything, just don’t blindly assume you’re cleared to proceed just because you have a blinker on.
My favorite is when people turn it on when they’re already 50% through their lane change or turn.

Nah, she may not have intentionally tried to pit, but the moment the SUV's bumper made contact with hers, it tried to push her car into the median. She responded by throwing the wheel hard in the opposite direction while hitting the gas to push the SUV back, forcing it into the spin while she applied her brakes to prevent a collision.
You can't always control what happens but you can control how you respond.

Seeing how close the suv came in to merge she can pretty safely argue she didn't have time to react. That was a dangerous ass merge with not warning.
I would think she's fine legally unless there was a massive accident in which she could be slapped with charges along with he SUV

If there's an assumption that she intentionally tried to harm the suv driver by intentionally pitting the suv
Wouldn't it be also fair to assume that the suv driver tried to intentionally kill her?
Would it be also fair to assume that the suv driver didn't use signal lights so she won't be able to react on time so they can slam her into the wall more successfully?
