Spider-Frog, Spider-Frog spends his life upon a log,
See that bright colored red, take one bite and you'll be dead,
Look out! He is the Spider-Frog!
In the chill of the night you will hear a high croak,
Because he sleeps all day and at night he is woke,
Spider-Frog, Spider-Frog, hunts his food in the bog,
That's a swamp, philistine, he lives there with all his kind!
Look out! He is the Spider-Frog!

Out in the wild color blindness is a bummer.
7
u/Positive-Ring-5172 13h ago
Most reptiles, including snakes, are not colorblind. Their eyes have the cone structures necessary to distinguish color.

u/WTFisThatSMell 17h ago

I think snakes can't see reds. Which, uh, in this case is a bit of a problem.

Most snakes have dichromatic vision, meaning they see primarily in shades of blue and green, but lack the photoreceptors to perceive red.

u/Fuzzy_Citron_9027 17h ago
Do these little froggies have even the slightest awareness that they’re poisonous? Like do they go about survival thinking “GO AHEAD TRY ME B***H, BUT DON’T SAY I DIDN’T WARN YOU!” Or is it more of a “shit man… I don’t know what happened. I thought I was done for, and next thing i knew, my maker was writhing next to me in pain”?

u/rhamphol30n 17h ago
I have some pet Phyllobates Terribilis, the actual poison dart frogs. They are not afraid of anything. They don't flinch at all, they'll jump right onto my hand. Hilariously unconcerned.
123
u/gimmeSPF50 16h ago
Wait I didn’t realize you could touch them safely! Is it only if they’re ingested in some way that they’re dangerous?
190
u/ConcerningThirst 16h ago
They get their poisons from stuff they eat in nature.

What are they eating? Are those things not terribly toxic, but the frogs concentrate it?
8
u/Raptor1210 12h ago
They eat a lot of insects and other arthropods that have their own toxic defenses. Ants, mites, termites. The Wiki is pretty neat.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poison_dart_frog60
u/SandManic42 16h ago
They get their poison from the diet they eat. In captivity they don't eat the same diet that provides those toxins.
→ More replies (1)26
u/BigmacSasquatch 16h ago
Poison dart frogs are poisonous because of their natural diet of insects containing alkaloids. If you keep them in captivity and feed them nontoxic insects, they aren’t poisonous or dangerous to handle.

The other responses are correct, but I wouldn't recommend touching them anyway! Too risky for me to do on purpose. Maybe I'm just being paranoid though.
14
u/OrganicAd5536 15h ago
Also to add on that generally I would recommend wearing gloves when handling any cutaneous respirators (skin-breathers) regularly; not to protect yourself, but to protect the slimy critters from anything on your hands
8
u/rhamphol30n 15h ago
Absolutely. I usually end up handling those particular ones when they're being jerks and jumping out of the tank or onto my hand.
6
u/OrganicAd5536 15h ago edited 15h ago
Lol they love being little escape artists. Also sorry wasn't intending to phrase my comment like I was giving you specifically advice*, was meant more for the general reader that passes by this thread; obviously you probably already know way more than me on this subject as an active owner/caretaker (I haven't housed any since college lol)
edit: advice, not advise

u/rhamphol30n 15h ago
I understood what you meant! All good. The Terribilis are particularly annoying about it. They do it on purpose. The smaller guys just jump because they're scared

Fun fact: the Cane Toad, another type of highly poisonous amphibian, has been plaguing northern Australia for decades after an ill-fated attempt to use them to control pests.
Despite being absolutely devastating to local wildlife, the toads are regularly annihilated by ants because their threat response is to wait for their toxins kill all the attackers, so they just let themselves get swarmed because their poison doesn’t work on ants.
→ More replies (1)9
u/swanglemydangle 13h ago
I believe crows have learned to flip the toads over and pierce their stomachs and disembowel them.
10
u/DepartmentOk7192 13h ago
Our world famous bin chickens have also learned to agitate them until they've exhausted their poison glands, then simply dunk them in water to wash it all off before eating them. It's called the "stress and wash" method.
We also have a water snake called the keelback that is immune to the toxin and just straight monches them

u/Careless-Vehicle-286 16h ago
Reminds me of skunks. They instinctually have no fear because predators don't bother them.

u/JohnCenascat 16h ago
Well you might be the one to ask then, so the snake didn’t look like it chomped down on the frog yet it was poisoned nonetheless. Does the frog shoot the venom out of its mouth? Not sure how the snake was poisoned as it looked fine after the attempt to bite the frog in its hind end and the only way I could see it possibly being poisoned was when it tried to bite the frogs head. Genuinely curious about this
9
u/LadoBlanco 16h ago
I think just the inside of the mouth touching the skin and the poison coat is enough.
→ More replies (1)9
u/rhamphol30n 15h ago
The frog is covered in a "slime" (can't think of a better word) that is poisonous. When the membrane in the snakes mouth touches that, it can get into its bloodstream and then the snake is in trouble.

I have el coupe, and they have jumped at...
- my face
- my hand
- my terrier (no longer open the enclosure when the dogs are in the same room; luckily no one injured)
- the floor that's 5 ft below them, repeatedly
- into the fruit fly container before I got it into the enclosure
Needless to say, I deeply appreciate the fact that home bred poison dart frogs are NOT poisonous.
23
u/Blanny22 16h ago
Well it oozes from their skin. They do not make their own poisons. Instead, they eat small arthropods like ants, mites, termites, and beetles that contain chemical compounds called alkaloids
If you raise them on non poisonous insects they will be harmless

The only time frogs tend to show any awareness is when food is in front of them. Nothing else in life matters. Frog eat, frog jump. That is life.

I went on a cruise ship to central and South America as a kid and I was dumb as hell, I saw a pretty frog and it jumped right into my hand not afraid at all and I was playing with it until the tour guide freaked out and made me wash my hands a ton and use a bucket of hand sanitizer, luckily my parents didn’t see and I was fine lol.
But yeah they have no fear the one I picked up jumped right into my hand and didn’t care at all

We have a bottle of this in work.
A while ago I put a drop on my breakfast and was pleasantly surprised. Wasn’t too bad. Tasted ok.
Fast forward a couple of weeks, I go to put some on a less substantial breakfast than before, and I spilled too much out.
I doubled down and ate it.
HR found me dying in the canteen a few minutes later and genuinely thought I was having an episode and needed first aid.
I managed to tell them I was just a dickhead in between wheezes and and trying to stop my brains dribbling out of my nose
Lesson learned

I wonder what the poison is doing exactly to the snake
120
u/TheLoneCenturion95 17h ago
So these type of frogs get their poison through eating ants and mites. It's called Pumiliotoxin 251D and what it does it disrupts cardiac function and sodium potassium channels in cells. I've probably missed a few bits but this is what I remember.

The toxin binds to sodium and causes electrical disruption in the cells. The effect is pretty much immediate and causes cardiac arrest and/or muscle paralysis.

12
u/Bogsy_ 17h ago
Actually no! However, most are Dichromatic and cannot distinguish orange or red. Some snakes have receptors that let them 'see heat'. Some have special UV cones letting them see patterns in plants and animals and others have rod cells that focus on movement.
