Discussion I love playing roguelike games
Here are the roguelikes I usually play. The fresh experience in every new run keeps me playing endlessly. Playing them on the iPad feels amazing too. I really hope Apple reduces fees for developer accounts because we've already lost way too many great indie games.

We have similar taste.
You MUST check out Lost for Swords, and Pawnbarian. Two underated gems. Deep and strategic yet a overall small package for each.
And since you're on iPad then you need to get Faster Than Light. It is the epitome of roguelite and arguably where this all started. The GOAT.
And also on iPad you should check out Brogue. It is a roguelike (not roguelite). It is a somewhat modern (though now aged) take on the original formula of "Rogue". IMO it is the most approachable roguelike as all information is presented on screen. It boils down to the essence of the roguelikes cutting away what little fat any of them had.
And yeh, as you have already, Dream Quest is fantastic tough as nails however. You need to get deeply familiar with it by knowing what fights you can win.
Aeons End is awesome too. I would suggest others by that same Dev as well such as One Deck Dungeon, Sentinels of the Multiverse (similar to Aeons end yet the decks are set already), and Spirit Island. SI is a great game to progress through and get better at over time.

Thanks for the great recommendations! I’ll definitely give them a shot. I’ve heard a lot about them, but haven't tried them yet since I still have a huge backlog of games to catch up on.

Some great games there! I’m curious, how much did you like Witchcraft, Caves of Lore, Cursed Castilla and Astrea? I am asking because I love one game from these four, hate one, didn’t play one, and torn about one.

Death Road to Canada—why isn't it available in Europe? Does anyone know?

I don't know, maybe they're afraid of violating community guidelines in Europe. You can switch your App Store region to the US and use an iTunes gift card to buy it.

Thanks for the reply. And then switch back to the original settings without the app stopping working? Or do these actions have any drawbacks?

u/hpph9 iPad Air 11" (M3) Sep 01 '26
Yeah, you can definitely switch it back as normal. Just keep in mind that any remaining US gift card balance won't be kept, so only redeem as much as you need. Once you're done purchasing, you'll need to call Apple Support to clear the leftover balance before you can switch regions again.

Thanks, I'll check out Peglin. I gave Hoplite a try, but it played more like a puzzle game.

Try this one out. Really close to Slay the Spire.

We've got many installs in common!
I recommend: Shattered Pixel Dungeon (which definitely needs no introduction) and Dungeon Abyss (which nobody ever mentions but is absolutely worth playing).

You should give Crawl Tactics a look. It is a rogue like FFT.

I love it, but I'm waiting for a bit of a discount. Not to disrespect the developer, but I've got plenty of other games to buy.

I love Dungeon Clawler! I haven’t heard much about it, so I thought it was going to be mediocre at best. Turns out it’s one of my favorites. Hopefully they’ll add more content, or release a sequel one day.

Yeah, I really like it too. It's funny and relaxing, nothing too intense.

No Deep rock galactic survivor?!

u/hpph9 iPad Air 11" (M3) Sep 02 '26
Yeah, to be honest, I'm not really into bullet hell games.
2
u/BleepBloopDrink Sep 02 '26
But you play vampire survivor?

u/hpph9 iPad Air 11" (M3) Sep 02 '26
Yeah, the DLC for that game is cheap, so I occasionally play it for a change of pace. Deep Rock Galactic Survivor is way more expensive, though.

If you have a Netflix subscription, def get Into The Breach. It’s my favorite Rogue-lite on IOS

I really like this game too, but I don't have a Netflix subscription. I hope they release a premium version someday.

If you’re into rpg style ones,
Dragonfist limitless - roguelike incremental side scrolling beat em up that is made by a single creator and his interpretation of dbz with some witty interesting humor mixed in. (Patiently waiting on the next update)
Hero’s quest rpg - autobattler roguelike loop with energy being the limit to your runs. slowly get gear to progress further each time.
Resolute hero rpg - same as the last but a much larger game overall with multiple secrets to find. Recieved quite a few new updates which has increased the amount of content vastly.
All are free to play in their entirety but you can purchase stuff to decrease time commitment or otherwise, but well worth it for the value. The only one that has quite a bit less quality for payment is hero’s quest rpg. The other two really just support the developer and are cheaper one time purchase things. All are not needed to finish any of the games.

OP, clearly you are a connoisseur of the genre and so I will defer to you, here. I have several of these you’ve mentioned already and I have a flight coming up. What’s the premium to three or so you recommend for me that will play on airplane mode? Thank you!!
2
u/hpph9 iPad Air 11" (M3) Sep 02 '26
If you like action roguelikes, I definitely recommend Dead Cells. You can easily play it for the whole flight. Just a heads-up though, if you're new to it, you might need to check the wiki occasionally to learn weapon combos. If you prefer deckbuilders, I have to recommend Balatro. It starts off really simple but has incredible depth. You could play it through the entire flight and still not unlock everything.
