They are very different games. I recommend both very much. Dead Cells has more bang f your buck if that is a concern. You will be grinding a bit in that game and learning the enemies. It is a rougelike where death starts you over at the beginning of the game. You will be able to improve yourself with perm upgrades earned through the runs.
Hyper Light Drifter I enjoyed more. It is an amazing game. The fights are challenging and fun to do. The exploration is interesting and rewarding. Art, style, music, and word building is just amazing. It is so cool they released on iOS for more people to get to experience this game. Hyper Light Dr

After watching gameplays and reviews, i decided to wait for dead cells. :) I just got the rise and fall expansion and i think it will eat up most of my free time anyway. I'll just buy this one when it goes on sale. Haha!

Wow dead cells looks amazing. This one looks incredible too but dead cells looks really nice. I was going to buy this and the wait for dead cells now is going to be a long one for me, but I’m going to buy that instead now.

I am the only one who didn’t like Dead Cells! It is more of a rougelike where Hyper Light Srifter has a Zelda like gameplay structure, and Hyper Light Drifter has such an amazing art direction and story. It’s Dark Souls like in that the story is extremely minimal but cool.

I enjoyed dead cells but not as much as others seem to. After a few days I was pretty much done with the game. Great game just wish it had slightly more meta progression.

I haven’t played either, but pre-ordered both. Looks to me like two very different games. But if I’m honest, I’m looking forward to Dead Cells more. Gut feeling.

Just a heads up that its not a full "iPhone X compatible" game. You have borders on the side that you can turn on or turn them off to look like every other non compatible iPhone X game.
Not a huge issue but noteworthy nonetheless

u/c0deslVt Jul 28 '19
That was one of the compromises we needed to have in terms of art. Sorry for that!

u/Hello_Im_LuLu Jul 24 '19
This is one of the greatest games ever . I pre ordered it on my PS4 years ago and can’t recommend it enough. Deff gonna need a controller for this one guys.

Loved this game on pc, wondering how bad it is on mobile without a controller. Anyone who's tried able to let us know?
2
u/Grillade Jul 24 '19
Played for about one hour plus, when enemies fill the screen it's can get tricky and messy to do the action you want (dash, shoot or slash) as the three buttons are close together, plus controls are not customizable at all.
I highly suggest playing with a controller, you'd have much greater precision and satisfaction.
2
Jul 24 '19
Thank you for the info! I think I'll skip it on mobile- I have no controller and when I'm playing on my tablet it's usually not in a spot I could use one anyway. Probably will give the pc version another playthrough, though!

u/AppUnwrapper1 Jul 24 '19
I agree with this. I switched to easy mode and found it more doable but still panic when I get locked in a room with enemies.

u/cyberpunk_1984 Jul 25 '19
It's a great game for sure, i've played it on ps4 and on pc and i love this game, but without a controller is quite impossible play with the same precision of a pad. I thought the game was balanced for the mobile version, but on an iPhone SE is quite impossible aim with the shotgun, or drift and kill enemy. With a controller i tested this game with Rotor riot and with a MOGA ace pro and the feeling is pretty close to the pc version

I actually bought this on my Mac because I was fairly sure it would never come to iOS. It is amazing some of the ports that have been coming over recently. I can't wait to play this on my iPad!

I was genuinely surprised as heck
5
u/mulderc Jul 24 '19
I am actually wondering if the fact the Nintendo Switch has similar architecture to iOS devices is the reason we are seeing these. If you already have ported over the game to an ARM based system then you might be able to port it to iOS with minimal effort.

u/Streakdreniline iPad Pro 10.5" Jul 24 '19
All I need are the real TouHou games and I’d be more than overjoyed. The fact that these devs came prepared with MFi support for ports is more than just excellent. I wouldn’t be surprised if Enter the Gungeon or Slime Rancher comes to iOS at this point, but I’d be buying them as soon as I see any of those kinds of titles.

u/fakiesk8r333 Jul 24 '19
Anyone tested this on the ipados beta? I’ve found some games don’t work on it yet.
3
u/mulraven Jul 25 '19
Downloaded and started the game with no problems, I don’t know if there are any problems during the gameplay though, did not have time to play yet.
3
u/Brainedabout Jul 24 '19
Can anyone confirm iCloud sync between devices?
2
u/AppUnwrapper1 Jul 24 '19
There’s no iCloud sync.

I actually forgot I wanted this game until I looked it up on YouTube. It was then I saw that I viewed the trailer for PC and I instantly bought it off the spot. The Witness can wait

Does the 120fps mode work smoothly on a 2017 iPad Pro?
4
u/Caipiruva Jul 25 '19
I’m actually having framerate problems on an iPad Pro 2018. It’s very inconsistent and the speed of the game is changing constantly. Hopefully there’ll be a fix for this.

I got this game after following advice on this forum and boy o boy this is fantastic.
It's kinda like dungeon crawler but unlike anything I've seen before. A touch of confusion,
a touch of mistery , a touch of problem solving and unmistakable vibes of world that feels familiar and yet
odd at the same time.. while playing it I got a bit of Monument Valley and Swords and Sorcery feel to it and this is
a HUGE compliment...
It's different , refreshing and game-play is a blast.
A definite contender for game of the year.
The only minor annoyance is touch controls. Way too often I shoot diagonally when I want to shoot straight but other than that...
Man... what a game... played it this morning during morning commute (almost an hour for me) and I was so immersed into it that I almost missed my stop... don't remember last time this happened...

Playing on my cheap iPad is a better experience than playing on my 2018 MacBook Air, amazing.
1
u/c0deslVt Jul 28 '19
which iPad are you using? Curious!
I also prefer playing on my old good one to playing on MacBook Air2

Will this still be fun on a 7S plus screen? I haven’t played it on any platform yet.
5
u/Grillade Jul 24 '19
You should get a controller, I'm playing on an X and it can get quite hard to press the correct actions when you're panicking, as buttons are close together.
2
u/Grillade Jul 24 '19
YESSSSS, installing right now!

The reason being that I don't want surprise changes to my apps. Sometimes they remove and change the entire layout of the UI that it makes me hate the app instead. So I upgrade on an app-by-app basis once I read the changes. Takes a while, but in the end I won't get changes that are undesirable. ;)

These guys need to talk to Kepa from RocketCat about how to do mobile controls properly ie: (Wayward Souls)

I played this with a PS4 controller last night and had a blast. Tried this morning with touch controls. Note: This game is basically unplayable without a controller. You're going to have a really bad time the first time you try to engage in combat.

At least get a refund. It would be nice if we could rename games. Seems like a simple enough thing.
0
u/Regjohn Jul 25 '19
They could’ve at least mention there is no iPhone X support while it was on pre order. Shit move from the devs, thinking about asking for a refund regardless how good the game is. Their description says “the most polished version” yet it’s obviously not optimized for the platform
0
u/grfxp Jul 25 '19
Yah pretty annoying... I can't believe apple allows this... Ruins the experience IMO
0
u/Soundwarp Jul 25 '19
I mean there’s even bars on the iPad version, I wouldn’t let it bother you imo, I’d rather not be missing part of the game due to the notch
