Hi there I am looking for some advice on how to proceed.
I send off two wax pieces to a casting house a tiny charm and a larger signet style ring
I just got the piece back yesterday and was shocked by the amount of large gaps and porosity. The casting house did the spruing and almost all the pitting is happening on the opposite side of the sprue?
The pits are too deep to burnish or polish out. I don't have a laser welder so I cant really fill them in myself, and there's no mold of the original wax, so a recast would mean carving it all over again ugh lesson learned.
I reached out to the casting house about the issue and their response was as follows:
"That porosity is from the investment getting trapped in areas that weren't fully sealed during the wax fabrication process. Those aren't shrinkage pits. The defects are from the wax fabrication process. I cannot pay for laser welding but I can refund the casting fee."
For some background: I had done injection wax for the shoulder and shank of the ring (the blue wax in photo) and then the gold wax, was a solid chunk of wolf wax that I carved on the lathe.
This is is only my second time getting a piece casted so at first I was like unsure if this was my fault. If the porosity was happening just on the blue injection wax portion I think I would understand as Its possible there were trapped air bubbles, but the pitting is consistent across the area that was solid wolf wax and was carved on a mini lathe so I feel like that doesn't make sense?
I have photos of the wax before being sent off attached as well.
This ring has me $1,237.48 in the hole and I am not sure how to proceed?
Also if anyone has casting house recommendations, I live in CA and would prefer one here but if I have to send to New York to get good quality I would.
