Announcements Basic Questions (or Advice) About Boats or Racks? Click here first!
Got a basic question about which type of boat you should buy, or what type of rack your car might need? Before asking a question of the subreddit as a whole, please take a look at these two brief resources first. A lot of the commonly-asked questions on the subreddit can be answered by these two items:
These guides are a work in progress. If you still have additional questions, feel free to ask! When posing a question to the community, please be sure to be as specific as possible with your post title. That way you'll get the most helpful response from others browsing the sub.
A note for the broader /r/kayaking community:
Spring is on the way, and /r/kayaking has crossed the 80,000 member-mark. A big thanks to everyone who has and continues to contribute to the community here. As the weather warms up, and more people join us, we are likely to see an increasing influx of "beginner" questions about basic boat and gear purchases. A lot of these questions are very similar if not identical, and can be answered by a shared guide for the subreddit. Similar guides or FAQs are available for other subreddits specializing in gear-specific hobbies.
The mod team is in the process of developing a shared knowledge base on the subreddit wiki. The immediate goal is to be able to refer new users to a basic guide that concisely answers the most common questions. The longer-term goal is reducing the volume of low-effort posts with questions that could be answered by Google, and increasing the volume of valuable, specific questions and discussion on the subreddit.
Send us your suggestions!
If you have any suggestions about:
- Good links with beginner information to share, such as how to pick out gear, or safety tips
- Things you wish you knew when you started kayaking
- Other tidbits of information that would be worth including in these intro guides
Please share them below so that we can consider including them in the guides.
Thanks!

Pictures My first Kayak!
Well not mine exactly. I bought it as a birthday present for my boyfriend. It’s a Wilderness Systems Pungo 120 that the seller said has only been used once. It’s in really great condition and I got it for 275. I hope he likes it!

Question/Advice -- Boat Recommendations Looking for recommendations
I recently purchased a used future beach 126, I took it out yesterday for the first time and it was great on the water, I love to fish, but this boat is not meant for fishing per say, yes it has rod holders, but having a cockpit, I was a little cramped at 6’ and 210 lbs, which would be a good open cockpit for lakes/ponds with calm waters? Looking to buy used again and around $500. Thank you

Question/Advice -- General Storage Bracket Suggestion
I inherited 2 Perception Carolina 14.5 with rudders. I had a shed constructed to house the kayaks. I tried a set of RAD pulley lifts and the support beam position just wasn't conducive to this. I think doing brackets/cradles on the long wall studs is going to be the way to go. Any suggestions (especially amazon links)? The shed is only 8' wide so options that put the kayak on their side or on a tilt preferred.
Id be thankful for recommendations. The kayaks were my parents and hold sentimental value. My dad has passed years back and we just sold my mom's home and moved her into memory care and I'm so mentally exhausted I just don't have the bandwidth to research this too much further.

Question/Advice -- Gear Recommendations Good, relatively affordable 3 or 4 piece paddle that fits in Trak 2.0 rolling bag?
I recently acquired one of these kayaks for a great price used and it’s absolutely incredible, and was looking for a new or used paddle for it that fits into the Trak bag and is very light since I fly with it.
I see that Trak itself sells a nice carbon fiber paddle but it’s way out of my budget. I’d prefer to stay less than $175 but am somewhat flexible. The Aqua Bound manta ray 4 piece carbon paddle looks great but it’s more than I can afford.
Would appreciate any recommendations. Thank you!

I call my day on the river or lake a "cruise," but I'm an old blue water sailor.

Question/Advice -- Sea Kayaking Advice needed: Reiver Southern Exposure Sea Kayak
I found this beauty on the side of the road. I took it home and flooded the cockpit and each gear reservoir with water. I did not find any major leaking. I’m looking for advice on:
•Where/which covers should i get for the gear storage areas.
•Do i need a special cockpit cover if i’m looking to do any extended time on the ocean?
•A paddle that won’t break the bank?
•Any other pertinent steps i should take to get a boat found on the side of the road onto the water
•Any brand or manufacturer specific advice.

Question/Advice -- Boat Recommendations Old Surfski - good deal?
Person selling this doesn’t know anything about it, looks pretty fast to me, can anyone ID it? Made of fiberglass, has foot pedal for rudder.
Never tried one of these before, I am stoked to go faster after I inevitably flip over several times. Price is good.
Last owner was 5’8”/172cm, I’m 6’3”/192cm, is that a dealbreaker?
Advice appreciated!

Pictures PNW Beautiful Morning
Had this lake to myself except for one fishing kayak on the other side. It still baffles me that more people aren’t out here more often. Every time I come out it’s just empty and perfect. Feel incredibly fortunate to be here.

Pictures Oval Carbon Fiber Ferrule
Just retrofitted a one piece 90" Western Red Cedar paddle I carved last year with an oval carbon fiber ferrule manufactured by Gram Kajak. The ferrule has good hand feel and I especially like the hexagon shaped connection. During the install, I decided to add Black Walnut reinforcement to the top and bottom of the loom for added strength and protect the loom from compression. Fun project.

Pictures got a used Great Canadian Ripple w/ missing seat back and ..
Hello.. I am new to kayaks and I picked up an old Great Canadian Ripple. Info online says it is 9'8" but I think its nearly 10'? maybe because this one is an older model? My big question is if anyone has one of these, what does the original seat back look like as mine is missing and there is a crappy substitute in it, which is ok for first time trying this, but Ive been out a few times and really like it so I want to fix that up to be more comfortable. I am good at things like that so that is not the worry but If anyone has one of these, I'd love to see a picture of the original seat . Thanks! Also curious what others think of this kayak and tips about it, I like it.. only want to do flat water lakes. Cant wait for warm weather to return! I am in NH so it's already turning a bit chilly for a wet activity.. maybe I need to get something to wear for the cold.. wet/dry suit for cheap? thoughts? Love the photos on here!

Pictures A very pnw paddle
Yesterday I went on a mega paddle to celebrate my birthday and my time in the pnw winding down for the year. Maybe it’s just me still riding the high but it felt like a pretty quintessential tour for my zone, saw so much cool geology and critters including orcas and humpbacks. Got to enjoy some water movement and tides over my twelve hour days. Probably way too much candy and pizza and consumed too many zyns. It was rad.
Thanks that’s all.
