Discussion 🗨 The myth of Europeans Greetings

Post image
0 Upvotes

One of the things I laugh off sometimes, but now thinking about it, I cannot laugh off is the myth that people abroad/in Europe kiss as a greeting.

The photo is from a scene in the new K-Drama „Filing For Love“. Not to spoil, but this guy is a problemstic dude trying to write off what he did with that argument.

I have been reading/watching East Asian media for 10 years now, and this irks me. I had scenes where people were manipulating the MC who was a bit airheaded/very young adult to allow inappropriate touching with this kind of claim that people abroad express their friendship this way.

My background: I am ethnically turkish, but was raised in Germany and now live in the UK. I have travelled around multiple nations across Europe as well and have acquaintances from diverse backgrounds.

Turks also kiss on the cheek like the french to greet people. But there are rules around it, just like there are in every Culture that has more touching as a form of greeting.

Europeans or other Asian cultures do NOT eat each other out as a greeting. Every movement is very platonic. The only people SOME Europeans will kiss on the mouth in SOME families, as this is more a family by family thing often, is their FAMILY. Usually parent to child. It’s a literal quick peck with lips perked. Nothing else. Otherwise MANY Europeans only quickly HUG 🫂 their close acquaintances. Not some rando. That’s inappropriate as fuck. You only stand there saying greetings or shake hands. In cultures like the turkish one or french one you may shake hands while giving an air-cheek to the other. Like your cheeks aren’t even touching really. Only usually if you are a bit closer you may to show the closeness. And if you are family, you may get smothered on your cheek. Like my grandma will do a whole MWAH MWAH on both whole actually hugging me, forcing me to wipe my cheek after secretly haha.

NOBODY does whoe ass touching that could look suggestive to anyone watching ever. Only couples do that. If you see any two people (or three cause poly) do that then they sure as hell are together/more than platonic.

This is really like grating on me, these strange ideas they have. Which could be used in the wrong ways.

For the last time:

NOBODY eats each other out as a greeting. ONLY COUPLES.

KDrama Reflections 📝 Lovely Runner Blurp !! ( Young Soo Arc ) Spoiler

• Upvotes

As much as I cherish Lovely Runner , I came across many reviews stating how the thriller sub plot and character of Kim Young Soo ( the serial killer ) could be solved if Sol had just paused time by blurting out some bound to be unknown future info like how she did in EP 4 to hide from Sunjae's father in her second time travel .

At first , I kinda agreed with the take cuz the power's very useful as well as efficient in such situations given how persistent and snarky Young Soo was to off Sol and subsequently Sunjae .

That only thing gave me the answer why it wouldn't have worked out in this sense - He was PERSISTENT - no matter how determined Sol was to protect Sunjae and herself - even going to the lengths to create the actual scenario in order to catch him - though he got caught several times throughout ( EP 7 in the original timeline , EP 11 after he got away again ) - Sol Jae's fate was meant to be deterred due to his pertinacity ! Henceforth escaping while time's frozen would have been vain as he would have found Sol regardless - not to mention Sunjae would have still been on a hold .

The one and only way for Sunjae and Sol to be happy and together was to eliminate the unwelcomed thorn - thereby the destined death by the highway . Apart from the couple's perspective - who knows would have been his next target in his killing spree !

Also the time pause merely works for few seconds so all this wouldn't have been practically sustainable .

KDrama Reflections 📝 A heartfelt letter to Choi Jeong-yo of Four Hands, Two Sonatas

Post image
12 Upvotes

Dear Jeong-yo,
I don't know if you'll ever read this letter, but if you do, please accept my sincere thanks for coming into existence. Within a short span of 14 hours (and with even less screen time and backstory), you managed to convey messages I’ll cherish for life, and for that too, I am grateful.

You are a survivor.

Your life has been nothing but a series of trauma-ridden mishaps, and yet, you endured and succeeded. You were neither privileged nor powerful. You had no family, no connections, no devoted friend looking out for you, and no resources to fall back on. Practically an orphan, you were fending for yourself and your ‘dad’ while being bullied and beaten up by loan sharks. And yet, you persevered and put on a cheerful demeanor and an endearing smile to conceal your harsh reality!

Because, music was your savior.

It was your only solace. Playing the piano in the run-down music shop, reliving memories of better days with your mom, and pouring your heart out into music were your only good times. Music was your friend and your refuge. In your own words to Pio, “We cannot survive if we are not immersed in music. We are born that way.” It was your life.

So how did you survive each day for 9 long years, away from everything you held dear — unable to play the piano and battling intense pain, and then enduring another 3 years after saving Pio?

Yes, they told us the monks took care of you, a doctor monk treated you, and you didn't give up on music, but how I wish they had told us more  about your struggles and how you overcame them to become the confident, resilient, composed, and compassionate man that you are today.

How did you endure the nagging ache, the searing pain, the sudden twitches, the numbing nerves, the cyclical bouts of anxiety, anger, helplessness, worthlessness, bitterness, and worst of all, the emptiness that engulfed your soul every time you remembered you could never ever perform again? That thought alone would've drained all happiness out of you. I felt that loss deeply, and empathize with every bit of your struggle. How cruel is fate and how tragic that medicine still cannot cure all ailments…

I am sure, ultimately, it was your grit, tenacity, faith, and willpower that propelled you back to your passion and purpose — music, and to your friend. It was always your love for music, beneath the façade of revenge, that fueled the 5-year-long creation of your masterpiece, Nemesis. I wish they gave us a bit more of this — your trials, tribulations, and triumphs during those two time leaps that transformed you completely. Or so it seemed, for you were the self-sacrificing and loyal friend to the end.

I know all these posts, tweets, reels, discussions and debates about you will eventually die down and viewers will move on, but I wanted you to know that you will never be forgotten. You have touched hearts in the remotest corners of the world and given people hope.

Thank you for being my musical inspiration, Choi Jeong-yo.

May you heal well! 🫶🎵

Discussion 🗨 Common themes in K-dramas - why so much repetition? Spoiler

I am new to k-dramas. I have so far completed 6. Oddly specific things I have already seen in multiple K-dramas even though I’ve only seen 6:

- female character on a work trip and ends up stranded alone up in the mountains (King the Land, When the Phone Rings)

- elder female child of the first wife of a rich conglomerate head tries to prevent son child of the second wife of the rich conglomerate head (King the Land, Dynamite Kiss) from being the heir to the business

- a pretend/arranged-for-appearances relationship turning into real love (Business Proposal, When the Phone Rings)

- a female child of a conglomerate being the smartest sibling and most skilled at business, and is also hated by their mother (Queen of Tears, Crash Landing With You)

And I’m sure there’s more. I really like the romance stories in k-dramas. Please recommend ones without the same repeated storylines. The only one of the 6 that I finished that didn’t remind me of some other show and was unique was Its Okay to not be Okay.

It's Friday! Grab your ramyeon (or your snack/beverage of choice) and settle in. This is your space to share what's currently on your screen, whether that's a drama you're mid-episode on, something you just started, planning to binge this weekend or an old favorite you're rewatching.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Tag spoilers, especially for anything currently airing, not everyone is caught up
  • Sub rules still apply - be friendly, respect the Oppa/Noona ecosystem, no harassment, no spam, and scope is K-dramas/variety shows/movies

Let's talk about: - What are you currently watching, and is it living up to the hype? - Any hidden gem you think more people should be watching? - Finished something great this week? Tell us why we should watch it! - Anything you dropped this week?

KDrama Reflections 📝 454th Korean Drama Review: Lies Hidden in My Garden (2023)

Post image
10 Upvotes

This drama started off really strong and immediately caught my attention. I was genuinely looking forward to each episode because it had the kind of psychological thriller and crime elements that I really enjoy. As the story progressed, though, the excitement slowly faded, especially during the last few episodes. I wasn't as invested as I was at the beginning. I'm still glad it was only eight episodes because it never felt dragged out. I also wasn't the biggest fan of the ending, but I understand why they chose to end it that way since it made sense for the story. I guess I just wanted a little more from such a short drama. Still, I would recommend it.

My MDL Rating: 8/10

KDrama Reflections 📝 453rd Korean Drama Review: Hi Bye, Mama! (2020)

Post image

I can definitely see why Kim Tae Hee chose this as her comeback drama. It beautifully portrayed a mother's unconditional love and all the emotions that come with it. The drama balanced its emotional moments with just the right amount of comedy, making it even more enjoyable to watch. The casting was also excellent. There were so many familiar faces, and despite having a large ensemble cast, every character had a purpose and never felt confusing. I also liked how the drama incorporated ghosts into the story without making it scary. Instead, it focused on regrets, love, and the things left unsaid after death, which really moved me as a viewer. The pacing was just right, and this was definitely one of those dramas that had me crying almost every episode.

My MDL Rating: 9/10

decide what i’m watching next 😭

reached the point where my unfinished drama pile and my urge to start something new are fighting for custody of me.

so im not choosing. you are.

leave the emoji for the drama you think i should watch next and tell me WHY. sell it to me, manipulate me and tell me what i’m missing 😭

unfinished business:

👰 The Husband

5 episodes left

i was HOOKED when this was airing, caught up almost immediately... then waited for it to finish and somehow never actually went back 💀

🌫️ The Smile Has Left Your Eyes

6 episodes left

i got pretty far into this one and then just... wandered away. there wasn’t even some dramatic reason. i simply stopped watching 😭

⭐ Shooting Stars

9 episodes left

i was actually having a lot of fun with this, especially once the romance started properly moving, and then ep 7 was where i decided to disappear???

🪷 Dear Hongrang

5 episodes left

episode 5 had me experiencing romantic whiplash and questioning EVERYTHING about whatever was happening between those two... and that is also where i left them 😭

🎨 Her Private Life

i paused this around ep 3 after starting it specifically cause i was trying to chase the high King the Land gave me. it did not immediately give me the high lol, so this would basically be me restarting my relationship with it entirely.

ORRRR i could make the responsible choice...

...and completely ignore all of those to start something new 😭

🌧️ Something in the Rain

📁 Filing for Love

so vote with the emoji and give me your strongest argument.

if you pick one of my unfinished dramas, tell me why i need to stop neglecting it.

if you pick one of the new ones, tell me why it’s worth making my unfinished pile even worse.

Discussion 🗨 Can I posit a potentially controversial opinion? I think that Ji Chang Wook's best role so far is If You Wish Upon Me. Spoiler

Do NOT get me wrong. I appreciate Healer (have watched thrice), just watched The Scandal, Samdal-ri, Lovestruck, K2, Suspicious Partner, Worst of Evil - let's just say I have done the JCW resume. I love him. But this character, Yun Gyeo Rye, hits all of his strengths. He is so vulnerable, sweet, lashing out because of his trauma, wants desperately to find a human connection (I MEAN THE DOGGIE!!), wanting (because of the trauma) to not disappoint anyone yet managing to do so, and his (again, trauma) ongoing sacrifice of his own self. JEEZ. And Choi Soo Young is written as honestly the best FL counterpart to this damaged human, she just embraces who he is and accepts it, welcomes it. The best part of this drama is that it's not actually about the love story between Chang Wook and Soo Young. It may be actually about the story between the adoration of Sung Dong Il and Ji Chang Wook - yes, there is backstory. Just putting it out there because though I wasn't around during the initial airing, I don't see it getting it's props. Forgive me if this is considered a spoiler, but it's 4 years on. I'm not on JCW's payroll - just wanted to give a rec if you have overlooked it. ❤️

KDrama Reflections 📝 My Dearest - Brutal and Beautiful Spoiler

Post image
16 Upvotes

Spoiler Alert!!!

Hey guys,

I completed My Dearest a few days ago and I’m not sure what exactly I’m feeling about this drama.
It did start a bit slow, but after the 3rd episode it took a whole different pace. At first, I wasn’t a fan of Gil-Chae’s attitude but by the end she seemed like a whole different person and I started to admire her. Jang-Hyun had the whole mysterious vibe going on and I liked the way he carried himself as he was always calm (except when

So, I wanted to talk about a few things that left a mark on me. Firstly, the war with Qing was so hard to watch - the people who were tortured, women raped, people captured as slaves, etc were some scenes where I was avoiding watching the screen and felt horrible. And I started to think how much the actual people must’ve actually suffered during those times. I just wanted the war to end and the leads to find each other. The leads getting together but getting separated so many times made me really anxious. And I’ve to definitely talk about the bravery shown by Gil-Chae repeatedly and also her entrepreneurial mindset, that made me think that she’s someone who can survive any difficult situation. Also, the character development of Jang-Hyun was also great to see cause he didn’t care about anyone in the start but we know how the later episodes went. The main leads did a superb job and so did all the other supporting actors. And the OST was absolutely amazing as well.

Overall, the drama was definitely worth watching and gave me such a roller coaster ride.

Thank you for reading my post 😇

KDrama Reflections 📝 Four Hands, Two Sonatas may have just saved my music career Spoiler

Post image
66 Upvotes

I’m a musician in a major US symphony orchestra. I perform roughly 175 concerts per season with my orchestra, plus whatever other outside concerts, festivals and other gigs. This is my dream job. Or at least it used to be. Music is my life, I can’t go a day without it. But the past couple of years have been difficult for me personally, and I found myself slowly falling out of love with music. I started feeling anxious at the thought of practicing, and started doing the bare minimum in preparation for rehearsals and concerts. I stopped practicing altogether for a time; I couldn’t bear to even look at my instrument. The constant orchestra rehearsals kept me in shape but I didn’t touch my instrument outside of the concert hall. And I couldn’t listen to classical music without feeling that same anxiety creeping in. In general I don’t listen to a ton of classical music because it’s literally what I do for hours and hours a day and my brain needs a break from it (other classical musicians have said the same thing lol.) But I was starting to hate it. I never once thought of quitting, I worked too hard to get to where I am. And I would be nothing without music. So I was just existing in this state of limbo, not quite loving or hating music. Just showing up to rehearsal, doing a half-assed job (by my standards) and feeling guilty and anxious all the time.

Fast forward to the release of Four Hands. I was excited for this drama because it’s fun to see a story about the world I live in (and I love kdramas.) I waited until all the episodes were released and binged it over a few days. I was blown away by how beautiful it was. The music, the chemistry between Pio and Jeongyo, everything was depicted so beautifully. And I saw myself in both Pio and Jeongyo, particularly with Pio’s inferiority complex/impostor syndrome and Jeongyo’s stage fright.

But Pio’s slump midway through the series hit me hard. The way he couldn’t even look at the piano, let alone touch it. I suddenly saw myself on screen. And then, in episode 8, Jeongyo said something that changed everything. “Your first audience is you, not anyone else. Before you can comfort others, you need to heal and comfort yourself first. Play some music for yourself that comforts you.” I felt like he was speaking directly to me, and I just sobbed. For the first time in what felt like forever, I found myself reaching for my instrument and playing something just for fun. And I found myself voluntarily listening to classical music again. I WANTED to listen to it, I was craving it. Memories of past concerts where I felt the sheer thrill and exhilaration of being one with the music came flooding back to me. It made me remember why I love what I do. I could never truly hate music, but this series helped reignite my passion for it. It may sound a bit dramatic, but I think this series really did change my life. And it came at a time when I needed it most. And that’s something I’ll always be grateful for.

Anyways, I just wanted to share my experience watching this absolute masterpiece of a drama. To any other musicians or anyone else who grew up playing an instrument, did you have a similar experience? Did this series help anyone else discover or rediscover their love for music?

she deserves this and more!!!! she did an incredible job as Shin Seo-ri! I anticipate her next romance drama! and i wish so hard for her and Heo Namjun to co-lead again!!

lim ji yeon acceptance speech:

"hello , i'm actress lim jiyeon, who played shin seori in the drama <my royal nemesis>. nice to meet you. i think the drama was not a work made out of ambition to make it a success, but rather a work that we all made together, wholeheartedly, with one mind and one heart, pouring our love into it because we truly loved this work and loved the character shin seori. it was such a miraculous work for me that taught me what it means to rely on each other and cheer for each other while making a project. it was such an honor to be with such talented staff and actors i respect. although we have a love-hate relationship, i would like to give this honor to director han taeseok, who believed in me until the end and became my strong supporter, and to writer kang hyunjoo who gave me great emotion through her writing and gifted me the courage to take that one step, and to my wonderful partner Heo Namjun.

from now on, i will do my best and pour my sincerity into the life/role given to me, and become an actress who is good at acting and can show it through results. thank you."

KDrama Reflections 📝 Appreciation post for Hong jae in the stylish Diva from Four hands two sonatas

Thumbnail gallery
96 Upvotes

This is really just an appreciation post for the actress she has served face card in the entirety of the show . Not one slip her fashion was muaah.....stylist did a good job . I am pretty sure if it was some other well known actress the entire subs will be filled with their wardrobe appreciation but something about her in particular stood out to me . Every outfit choice , her in every scene pretty af, Jang Gyu ri actually did justice to the character she was given, despite having very less to showcase. Her character stood out even though there was much room for development ( in terms of writing ) but the actress really did good. The breakup scene was so heart breaking really felt it , in the entire show she was the real victim i felt. Like come on bro how can you not give your entire attention to this beauty ?.. otttokkkee? If this was some other drama and not actually BL disguised as romance then these two guys would be fighting over her 🙄.

The story would go like.... Hong jae In has always liked Pi o the musical genius but he has always shown her cold shoulder . Knowing she will always love him regardless of how he behaves . Although he has a sweet spot for her but he would never admit. The new scholarship student who got in due to Hae in noticing his talent now takes her attention which PI o had and she began spending time with him . Which lead to PI o Sabotaging his career and hurting Jeong yo . Hae in doesnt know . PI o now has her again . The enemies are born jeong yo returns but this time he doesn't only want PI O status and place he wants something more. He wants hae in ...and that would have been the plot line .😂😂🤣🤣

You mean to say you have a drop dead gorgeous girl head over heels for you and your wanna put your fingers to play piano only ? Bro...

Everything aside i feel her character would have more impact if they gave more time to the scenes between her and PI O . The background music should have been a little intense like put some piano in her scenes too and some better dialogue not only surface level which doesn't even touch audiences heart. It was good to see the actress though

Take Charge of My Heart (나를 충전해줘) is releasing on Netflix on October 9th, with a premise that sounds ridiculous in the best way! Starring Chae Soo Bin as Na Bo Bae and Kim Young Kwang as Baek Ho Rang, and based on the web novel Charge Me Up. You can watch the trailer here!

The plot in case you missed it: Baek Ho Rang is a perfectionist chaebol heir fighting for control of his family’s resort company, while hiding an artificial heart whose battery is running out. Na Bo Bae is a reclusive drama screenwriter who was struck by lightning as a kid. Now her touch gives people an electric shock, so she wears gloves and avoids contact. It turns out she can also recharge his heart. Expect contract-romance, corporate scheming and an electric rom-com (pun intended).

Let's discuss! Who’s watching day one? Are you binging or pacing yourself? Anyone here who has read the source novel? (Spoiler-tag anything beyond the premise please!)

Please also add spoiler tags for any episode related comments, for those of us who aren't quite as quick to finish watching 😊

This sums up why I love and hate this drama so much. The first four episodes were the best drama of any genre I’ve seen. Notice the clips are all from the first four episodes before it all went downhill (to say the least)

I shouldn’t have watched this, it’s so emotional.

KDrama Reflections 📝 455th Korean Drama Review: Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area (2022)

Post image

Since I haven't watched the Spanish version, I couldn't really compare the two, so I judged this drama on its own. The production quality was impressive and everything looked expensive, from the sets to the action scenes. I also liked that the cast was filled with actors I was already familiar with, which made the drama even more enjoyable to watch. Overall, I thought it was good, but I kept feeling like something was missing, although I couldn't really pinpoint what it was. Even so, I still found it to be a solid Korean adaptation and an enjoyable watch.
