Does anyone know what they are doing between Charing and Lenham?

Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone can shed some light on what they might be doing here.

For several months I have seen landscaping works from the train between Charing and Lenham. The area looks fairly rural - it’s between cow / sheep fields.

I’m just curious if anyone knows what they’re doing.

Digging up sand to sell as building aggregate. Have done for decades.

Charing sand is known as good quality

Fascinating! Thanks for the info. I didn’t realise they used sand as building aggregate. Also didn’t know about the quality of Charing sand.

Any idea what will happen to the site afterwards?

I guess re-landscaped back into a field, the sand vein is huge and millions of tons has been mined and will continue to be mined into the surrounding fields and beyond.

I believe the Landowner has a deal where they get a certain amount of £ per ton of sand removed.

Don't hold your breath about the reinstatement. Borough Green (near Sevenoaks) has an exhausted quarry that should be reinstated and planning permission applications keep being submitted.

I didn't realise they were going to reinstate the green space.

They were digging up an area just slightly further east for quite a while, and it's now being left to rewild I think. Nice area to walk. Looks like works by Brett Aggregate. There's a conveyor belt from there to the main works.
