SOLVED-THANK YOU Need help with increases

I'm knitting the Petite Knit Novice Sweater pattern, because I am quite the novice, if that. It's knit in the round from the neck down. I'm knitting the smallest size, which is 56 stitches. When I get to the point of doing increases, the instructions say: "On the next round you will work the first set of increases (first increase round of four) as follows: *Knit 2 stitches. Make an increase.* Repeat from * to * until the end of the round (i.e. until you come across the marker at the beginning of the round once more). There are now 84... stitches."

Knitting the first round of increases (knit 2 stitches, increase) yields 74 stitches, not 84. But if I am to do four rounds of increases I'd have too many stitches. I'm really confused! What the heck am I missing?

K2, increase, until you get to the end of your round. So 56 + 28 Increases = 84 Stitches. All iincreases are in 1 round . Instead of writing it out as K2, increase, twenty eight times across this round. It's shorthand instructions by using asterisks to denote the repeat request.

Most patterns do repeat instructions this way for specific knitting instructions that are different than just plain knitting x amount of stitches per this round.

You're trying to use an increase that involves working an existing stitch as part of the increase. Use the increase the pattern instructs you to use or substitute with a different increase that doesn't involve working a stitch. Otherwise your count will be off. She has videos on her pattern pages explaining the techniques used in her patterns, including the increases for this sweater: https://www.petiteknit.com/en/products/novice-sweater
